Big Island Freediving | Puako | Freediving Hawaii
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Well it was a swelly day all around the island and as you can see visibility was not great for big island freediving but we made the most of little Puako's water and enjoyed the swim throughs and even a spot of "sailing" on the way back :)
Ham Radio Beginner - Bands & Frequencies | Zoe Wilson
มุมมอง 56K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In my new interest in ham radio (amateur radio) I have been focusing more on bands and subsequently frequencies. It is my hope to get a thorough understanding on the radio spectrum before I start looking at my station setup and its capabilities. Where do hams hang out on the radio and where can one communicate SSB vs CW?...well that's what I am learning about and touch briefly on in this little...
Going for the Ham Radio License. Let's talk :)
มุมมอง 3.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Ham Radio....Well, I started playing with Morse code a few weeks ago on flight from Hawaii to California where there is no entertainment, and I realized it's really not that tricky to learn. That got me to thinking "Wonder if there is a way to talk to other ppl via Morse?". I was later speaking to a seasoned person from the military whom suggested Ham Radio. And there we have it! While things a...
Freediving Catalina - Conditions on Point!
มุมมอง 9673 ปีที่แล้ว
A little group of buddies from Hawaii, Nevada, and California, re-united again in San Diego. For 2 of them, myself and twin Heidi, it had been about 18 years since going to Catalina. For the other two, new territory! We heard good things about freediving Catalina and after much debate with the lady on the phone when booking our ferry tickets whether we can bring our fins or not (it's absolutely...

10 meters is an interesting band, because it has properties of both HF and VHF. Like VHF, it can be used for local communication, but when it's "open", it is good for long distance communication. One way to tell is to check right next door 27.385 LSB, CB channel 38, and you'll hear the good buddies working skip when it's open. Right now we're near the peak of the 11 year sunspot cycle, so it's open a lot.

I am were you are as far as very new to the ham world and currently studying for the technician license. I'm looking at the ICOM 705 for a mobile unit. It has a lot of features to grow into as I move forward. But only 5 watts with it's own battery. And 10 watts on external power supply. I have seen on TH-cam that it will reach out. I plan to get into POTA and SOTA. Good luck. Hope to hear you on the air.

So.. where did you settle? Did you get your Tech or General yet? I think ICOM is the easiest to navigate. But Yaesu are not hard to learn. I personally stay away from chineese manufactured as much as possible. Diamond and MFJ ant. are affordable and work really well.

What happened? Just found this channel? You should have a good shot at a quality channel. We need more new ham channels, you location in Hawaii makes it very interesting for those of us on the mainland and being a YL would give you a major head start. Where are the videos? I hope all is well and you got your license.

Buy what you can afford. Icom IC-718 is a simple radio at a good price. Handitalkie: Yaesu 60 is a great one. Mobile: Best you can get. Dual band on mobile and handheld.

I guess by now you have gotten your FCC lic. or lics. meaning your General Lic.., too. When you do / did get your lic. you get 2 licenses - One for the radio you operate and one for YOU as the operator. As I understand it, the money should go into a best antenna which receives the best signals to be decoded by your radio(s). Also be aware of being out in open if thunder should be around you since your radio equipment attracts lighting. Always be aware of when and when NOT to do radio outside depending on weather conditions. 73 ( Best Wishes ) chris christopher … KCØSRN

Not sure where you're at after a year, but you should get an icom 7100 and a collection of mobile antennas and do Parks on the Air.. you'll have a blast... de KE8KW

Hi.... you're in for a ride... I'd like to make a couple comments... I've been doing this stuff for about 35 years and still love it... aim at General... If all you get is your tech, just don't stop there... You have to get to General in order to do the stuff you're really wanting to do. You are going to be VERY popular for 2 reasons.. Hawaii and you're voice is going to generate HUGE pileups... us old farts love to talk to a pleasant female voice.. Not sure of your living situation for antennas etc, but it might be a challenge unless you have your own property to set up antennas... I'm available for any elmering that you might need... I operate both mobile as well as home base ... digital.. ssb, POTA , and planning on getting back into CW (so I can justify buying a Begali Key)... good luck to you.. subscribed and following... de KE8KW New Hampshire..

Hey did you ever get your license? Haven't seen any more.posts. I found a great 3 pt. Series on TH-cam. Between watching that and taking practice tests I was able to study, pass my test, get my call sign, and begin transmitting all in the course of a week. I am brand new, but if I can be of any help please ask
