If you are a club player then you might don't know your position until close to the first game or the coach might switch your position mid season. You cannot pick a shoe based on position. I agree with you that not all high tops are made equal and there many out there that provide zero ankle support.

@SR1Volleyball if we're talking about top clubs, players won't change position, if we are talking about professional clubs in minor leagues that could happen, but not so much. Changing position mid season can happen on an amutuer level or when dealing with young players who are still developing their game style and position in this case the best shoes to start with are somewhat the middle ground between flexible and really hard ones, for example the new Asics beyond. In the first case where you are a more "veteran" player and you are a starter in your team, then you will have to choose your shoe based on what type of player you are, your weight and of course your position on the court otherwise you will more likely run into injuries and ruin the shoe sooner
