"Hejre Kati-Hello Kathy"(Hubay) - Hungarian dance on accordion by Leo Aquino
I'll have a personal video ready next week, but for now, I've found another recording by the famous Canadian virtuoso Leo Aquino. It's a medley of Hungarian Gypsy dances, the last one of which Johannes Brahms published as one of his famous series of Hungarian Dances. See you next week!

"Fantasia Duet" the legendary Shalaev with Nechayuk live concert 1982

I posted the original recording of Anatoly Shalaev doing this piece with Nikolai Krylov. Unfortunately, that was not a live performance. This is the only video I've found of him performing live on stage. This time he partners with Vladimir Nechayuk. The original audio was quite poor so I adapted the LP record track to this video track. Note his very original bellows shake technique which I've n...

"Flute Sonata (Allegro)" CPE Bach - accordion solo for the right-hand

Because free-bass works the left hand quite intensely employing the thumb as a pivot point for difficult passages, I've slightly injured my left thumb. Of course, the best treatment is rest. That's why I've chosen to play a piece for the right hand only. This is the 3rd movement - the Allegro from Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach's beautiful sonata for solo flute. Among the great J.S. "Carnival of Venice Variations" - performed by the great Charles Magnante

Of course Pietro Frosini's arrangement of this Italian folk song is most popular among accordionists, but Magnante's is just as inspired. Apart from all the colorful technical features Magnante comes up with a most tantalizing modulation into the minor mode which transforms into an rousing tarantella.
"Down by the old Millstream" - solo for left hand the great Galla-Rini

Normally the bass keyboard serves strictly as the accompaniment for the melody-leading right hand. It takes a great deal of skill to carry the melody & accompaniment with one hand. But in this recording Mr Galla-Rini demonstrates his ability to do both with only the left hand. I got this from an old cassette tape & thought it would be an interesting novelty for Galla-Rini admirers.

Umm. Wow! Now this is what I call FOCUS. Fortunately I had a very good music teacher who grounded me in musical theory and technical practice but he also weeded out my physical and psychological weaknesses. He confided that my confidence is naturally virtuoso because I love what I'm doing and I no longer have these characteristic impediments that a novice has. After 5 years I played with this same confidence. I promise anyone, focus by weeding out your weaknesses and what will be left is your strengths, if you truly love what you are doing. Thank you Paul for this little gem.

Well Paul, congratulations are in order. First on successfully getting the salvation of your prized Sonola back again and I see that your thumb is not bothering you. Is your Sonola Stradella only or can you also switch it to free base? I can really hear the quality of the reeds in the treble and the base sounds really solid, not all over the place. I find myself wishing you would choose a longer piece of music but you played that so nicely. Compared to your playing ability, I listened to another guy who was struggling with the music to Brahm's Hungarian Dance No. 6. I kind of went ouch when I heard him struggle but I know he would have wanted me to comment, so the kindest thing I could put down as a comment was: "When I play that piece, I sometime think that it is better to have loved and lost than to not have loved at all." And that statement is occasionally absolutely true for me. There are days when the energy won't work for me and I wish I had gone and played pool or done something else.

Thank you Richard! I chose a shorter & easier piece just to 'break myself in" with the rebuilt instrument. After not playing it for 9 months had to re-adjust to it slowly. Sonola accordions only have the stradella bass system.

Wow! Amazing piece of music. Made me feel as though I'm walking through a pasture with some bits of forest here and there and suddenly I pick up the sound of some birds energetically communicating. And your confidence on the keyboard is amazing. it really is. Of course, not lost on me was the absence of base because you need to rest your thumb. But the music already sounds pretty busy just with the treble. Pretty but busy. Well, I'll just have to hear it with the base another time in order to edit my final opinion. But beautiful piece of music and I loved the confidence in your playing. I would love you to post more of your own playing more often. It's like I starve otherwise.

Well, with Roger Miller telling us way back when that we couldn't go roller skating in a buffalo herd and... all the other nonsensical things we couldn't do, I was certain my problems with accordion bass were behind me. That is until... until I ran into technical problems trying to perform complex compositions that my course teachings had never prepared me for. Oh the p-a-i-n! But intuitively, as I later realized in hindsight, I knew what to do and got myself a book just devoted to accordion bass exercises and drills that eventually enabled me to overcome those problems I had encountered in trying to tackle those compositions in the first place. And the problems I had encountered was this very thing that Galla-Rini demonstrates can be done. You just have to go through the pain... a lot of work and practice. Or... you'll sentence your ability to be a decent accordionist to death, if you try to avoid what's in front of you to confront and overcome. Well that was long ago and finishing in Roger Miller's lyrical refrain: "You can be happy if you've a mind to." Thanks Paul, and how are you doing by the way!

I play many of his arrangements. Much respect for him. I have two copies of this very arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue that I play. Rather than pushing only for technical perfection like so many teachers, he was big on teaching correct phrasing, dynamics, and how to play a piece like the composer intended. He was still teaching and playing nearly to when he passed away at 100 years old. Later in life he performed for smaller groups and clubs and ran the yearly accordion camp in Washington state. I attended a couple of his performances when he was in his 90s and his playing was still outstanding. RIP Maestro

His accordion was a chromatic keyboard but he made it look like a piano accordion keyboard since piano keyboards were the new "thing" and he wanted to make sure he was "fitting in". as it were. I like Boris Borgstrom's work, which is modern but diatonic. I've got a video in the "My venture into free-bass" playlist called "Theme & Variations" which I liked very much.

Beautifully played. I'm going to share this video with an organ playing friend. I still occasionally play a Giulietti bassetti without tone chamber, like the one you used to play. Do you ever choose to play it anymore, since getting your bigger one?

Thanks again Craig! I still have my non-tone chamber Giulietti but I prefer the richer tone of the Super Model V so I play it almost exclusively these days.

Intro sounds like a minor key variation of the intro from his Jolla Caballero

You're right they both us a descending chromatic chord sequence...very similar.

I love it. Note the chromatically descending diminished seventh chords in the beginning intro. It’s not notated in the music.

I'm glad you liked it Zevy! Yes that chromatic chord sequence is quite tricky & is not written in his published editions.

Regarding Accordion Land: I love your website. Thank you for presenting Mogens Ellegaard's recordings, and so many others.. One quibble regarding the reeds in the GOLA...there is no such thing as gold-plated reeds. Please keep up your good work. Thanks.

He was much more than 'quite a virtuoso for the day'! The fine playing in just this short piece requires a depth of technique, sensitivity to style, and taste, that many accordionists today have not acquired...and I dare say, do not care to acquire. Ellegaard was a great musician playing the accordion. I would make that claim only about a small group of so-called virtuosos today. Ellegaard also remained open to accordion development and adopted the Russian Bayan (in a C system configuration built in the Jupiter shop by Sergei Barinov). Finally, he selflessly pursued and promoted the continued development of original repertory. It will be a long time before his musicianship and contribution to music and the instrument will be surpassed.

Thank you for the additional information Tony! He was actually received university honors in the study of literature too. Truly a man of many gifts.

Indeed that is one of his best recordings (sound quality wise and also performance wise). I have the music for this and have attempted to learn it but usually get interrupted by life. I might give it a go again. While some might have both an acoustic accordion and a modern digital accordion as I do.... it might be a fun exercise to use the capabilities of a digital accordion to perform it. The Grand Canyon Suite always intrigued me and I love the "tone poem" and special effects when an orchestra plays it.
