I am an average Joe, but I believe that making a cinematic travel film doesn't have to mean dragging around lots of expensive equipment. In this video I break down exactly what I use to produce quality cinematic travel films whilst being budget minded and travelling light. If you are thinking of shooting something a little more considered and creative than a Vlog then you may find something in ...

Ooh! Can’t wait to see where you go! I’ll be intrigued to hear your thoughts on Thailand as I went to : Chiangmai, Bangkok, Ko phi phi/ko Tao/ ko phangan back in 2006. I remember a super saturated experience with a lot of plastic colour & craft and of course a lot geared towards back-packer tourism. Apart from a few commercial malls I don’t remember crossing paths with anything that was super modern (that could just have been our route) and it will be intriguing to see how much it has or hasn’t changed. 😊
Marigold foot 🧤🦶
You showed them
For sure! I am Taiwanese and you should be confident about Taiwan’s safety. Have a nice trip in Bali~ Hope you had enjoy your time in Taiwan😆
I had a feeling it would be fine. So far so good!
Brilliant video, really well paced and good content
Thank you 🙏🏻 Glad you enjoyed it.
Never came across your channel until today, and boy am I glad I did. Just loved every aspect of this video, from the shots to the music etc. Great work all around, now a subscriber, cant wait to watch more.
Ah thank you Christian. Very kind words. And welcome! 🙏🏻
Best thing I’ve seen on TH-cam in a while! 🧠💥
TY 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Awesome video!
Thanks Bask 🫶🏻
Loved this! Thank you for sharing your experiences in Tokyo and your climb up Mt. Fuji. Your earlier videos are actually what inspired me to start doing TH-cam videos myself, although I am nowhere near your level of storytelling skill. I admire your ability to see things that many other people would overlook. After living in Japan for over half my life, it was nice to view Tokyo through fresh eyes. I caught your TH-cam shorts and reached out, but it was already your last day here. Good luck in your upcoming travels, and I hope we have a chance to meet someday, somewhere in this wide world!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I’m glad that you felt inspired. Keep doing what you enjoy or feel is right for you, regardless of level 🫶🏻 🙂
Wonderful!! Thank you for sharing 😍 Looking forward to see 1000000 followers here!
🤣 Thank you. 🙏🏻
Hi Matthew. Looking forward to your Tokyo video. I went over to your website and Patreon, but wasn't sure where to make a suggestion so please allow me to post something here. Have a look at places in Thailand. There is such a variety of things to see and do, the food is great, and the people are wonderful. I think you would have some great experiences there!
Hey! Thanks for reaching out. I’ll see if I can make things a little more user friendly on the site. And yes, feel free to make suggestions here. If you do have places in Thailand, bare in mind I am travelling up to Bangkok from the south 🙂
I’m also geeking out a bit here… your profile pic, is that the LUMIX S5iix?
@@matthewjohnmurphy Yes it is! I use both the GH and S lines from LUMIX, but my main travel camera is the GH7. I know you're a GH user also. =)
@@matthewjohnmurphy I've been to Thailand a bunch of times, but haven't gone too far off the beaten paths. In suggesting it, I was also curious to see what places you might discover for your travels. But a couple memorable places come to mind: - Koh He (also called Coral Island) is a small island south of Phuket. It's a popular day trip from Phuket, but if you stay overnight in one of their beach bungalows, it gets really calm and quiet after the day trippers leave. When we stayed, we were actually the only guests there. No internet. No TV. The power generator only turns on when the kitchen needs to cook. That meant waking up at sunrise for quiet walks along the beach, and going to sleep at sun down. Granted, this was a while back, so things may have changed a bit, but it was magical. For meeting people, I'm not so sure... but it might be interesting to get to know the hotel staff and learn about their routines for taking care of visitors? - Farther north is Ayutthaya which was a memorable day trip to escape from the urban sprawl of Bangkok. I've always wanted to go to Chiang Mai but haven't made it there yet. If you go, I'd love to see what you discover there!
Oh these sound incredible! I’ll check them out!
What month did you go in?
October. 👍🏻
Do you want to organically increase views like subscribe on TH-cam?
Loved this! I can’t/don’t skate, something I always wanted to do but never did (now I feel I’m too old to start at 35 😅) This documentary is such a feel good experience and brings out the passion in skateboarding culture 10/10!
Never too old. 🫶🏻
@@matthewjohnmurphy If I could get over the falling aspect I think i'd do better 🤣
nice video
Thank you 🙏🏻
It's great to see a video about the skating scene in thanet. Growing up skating in margate and all over thanet was amazing and the fun we had, people we met, friends we made. I miss it but amazing to see more and more people. Props to hazeleigh and you for the video
Thanks Tom. 🙏🏻
I've seen your prayer in Tokyo!
Haha 👋🏻 I saw some very sad things there 😢
This is just what I needed, I haven’t really skated much since Covid, my friends moved away, not far, but far enough we don’t skate at all together really now, and my one mate that got me into skating 11 years ago barely skates now, only on the odd occasion…..my local skatepark got boring alone, and my confidence just got worse and worse, I have a lot of tricks, but I just hit a wall of not being able to land harder tricks consistently so my boards been in my room against my wall for a year and I’ve only skated like 3 times since January this year…. I got into a nasty habit of smoking and eating junk food instead of skating, because skating has just seemed pointless to me since all this happened This has given me motivation to get off my arse and just do something I used to enjoy so much, thank you! This is such a powerful video, the quality of this is so good
This is amazing to hear. I’m glad that it has inspired you to get back on the board. 🫶🏻 And thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
Did you enjoy it up there on that sacred place ?
It was a privilege to experience it. This world is incredible. 🫶🏻
What a great video and what a great bunch of people. I look forward to coming to Margate and seeing the skatepark completed.
Thank you. Very kind words 🙏🏻
so cool!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Such a shame that this documentary focusing on Margate features hardly any varied footage of skating in margate, it's mostly footage of Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Herne Bay and the occasional clip of that decrepit old Arlington car park in Margate, quite sad.
Hey Carrot. Sorry the doc made you feel sad. You’re right, there aren’t varied clips. In a way it is indicative of a need for the Margate park. The skate scene in Margate seems almost forced into the car park or Hartsdown park (there are some clips in there too). If you have any spot suggestions please comment, the crew would love to hear em’ I’m sure! Look after yourself, and thanks for engaging. 🫶🏻
@@matthewjohnmurphy No worries! I think the area around the turner and the steps are good, the oval bandstand also seems like a good spot.
Thank you. Will consider that for future projects if we do them 🤘🏻
Great Doc, Me and my crew were from St Peters, skating early 80's into 90's. Used to skate with Dean & Daff, meet up with Ian Downs, then onto Millmead to meet James Read, leon... over to Margate. I remember the big half pipe built at Hartsdown, Then there was the Tivoli ramp, whilst we used to find places to street skate, Mill Lane, sundeck, gateways etc... Used to hang around with the Margate skaters as well as Broadstairs crew.
Sounds like great times Gav. Thanks for watching.
Where is the pool in this clip? It looks so lush.
Google ‘Dan Cates Pool Party’ theres a Route One article about it 🤘🏻
Great video and really interesting background information. For outright video features you cannot beat the Lumix system, either M4/3 or full frame. Even though I had a full Sony kit for stills I ended up building my video kit around Lumix as it provided better video quality for about a third of the price. Regarding marked lens focal length, your 12-60 is factually a 12-60 mm lens. It is the sensors crop factor that gives it an equivalent look and field of view of a longer lens on full frame. For m4/3 it X2. If the same focal length lens was mounted on a camera with a larger sensor like a Hasselblad X2D the crop factor would be x0.79 making it appear wider than the full frame lens.
Thanks Ian. You can now consider yourself my go to for all future lens crop factor information 🫶🏻 haha
This was really interesting to watch mate! Your slow mo audio impression 😂 I feel like if I ever make the jump to a DSLR / bigger camera then I'll relate a lot more. For now, I'm considering getting the ZV-1 Mark II to continue with my very small, run and gun set up (I guess this all leans into the last point you made) Nice stuff mate, and congats on smashing through 40k views on your cinematic Mexico videos. Love them!
Hey dude, thank you! I sometimes wonder if life would be much easier shooting on a more compact camera, and at what cost? I have to say, I don't think I could bring myself to shoot on anything less than 10-bit colour. I am clearly a colour addict. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me, and hope you and Hannah are well :)
Incredible work this, proud to call Joe one of my best friends whilst growing up, always had his own way of doing things and an energy that radiated at the locals in Rugby. Stoked to see you still pushing brother!
Thanks Danny. I'll pass on the message to Joe 🙏🏼
Im a skater from the 80s and back then we were considered as louts causing damage allways being moved on by the law or security, and now its completely different , I love this documentary im from margate and i love what these guys are doing , so thats a MASSIVE THANK YOU from an old timer that rembers the Z boys😅
Awesome. 🙌
Thanks 🤗
I always wanted my girlfriend to try skating when i was a kid. When i was 8 i went to a tap dancing class and it was just girls and as i waked in they all laughed at me. i never went back.
I’m sorry to hear that. 😔

Sometihois wrong with the volume?
Hey, what’s up with it do you think?
@@matthewjohnmurphy it just sounds low. I am not sure if it’s on my end or the video. I really like you connect even if I had a hard time hearing it. Thank you 😊 🙏
Thanks for letting me know. Working on things like that all the time, so great to have feedback 🙏🏻
Absolutely love this! Every frame is perfect ✨
So glad. Thank you 🙏🏻
Great to see quad skating featured! It's annoying for peeps to be talking about "skating" but it actually turns out they mean skateboarding specifically.
I think the more quads get featured the more chance there is that the language will change. The whole landscape is changing, as Daiz mentions.
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️ I love quad skating. It's really mesmerising. Yeah I can Imagen that's a frustration. The community here for quads is growing quickly. 💪
I would be nice to have more inline skate, bmx and scooter riders included as part of the community of wheeled skatepark users. It can only add strength!
Your videography is so on point Matt 👌🏻✨ Beautiful film and can't wait to see the finished skate park 😍
Thank you. I’ll pass on to Hazel too 🙏🏻
Thank you. Really glad you enjoyed the film. 🙏❤️

What a beautiful video! This made me want to pick up a skateboard and get out in the sunshine. I hope the park proceeds and the Margate skate community continues to grow and support each other in all the great ways that they have done so far. A real showcase of a fab community.
Come for a skate with us Zoe if you're back in Margate!

yeah you were, these are names that still come up in conversations. We’d love to curate a history of Margate skateboarding exhibition at some point but there’s not a lot of documentation and it’s a lot of work!
My dad Pete knowles skated in thanet and Kent in the 80s with Neil brown and others I'm sure u remember the outsiders film from the early 90s

I’m so sorry to hear that :( Might I ask, where were you visiting?
I have just seen your video and like the style…why stopped updated?
Hey, I am glad you enjoyed it. The reason I don't post often is complicated. Life is complicated. But the main reason is money. I have very little, even less since I posted this video and they cost me a lot to make. I would love to travel more and to show people the world through my eyes, but it's not achievable right now. These trips are entirely solo and I edit them myself, which takes a lot of time too. I really hope to bring you more in the future... let's see what happens. Thanks for your message and look after yourself. Matt
@@matthewjohnmurphy Hi I can see how much effort you put on your video, how amazing you’re entirely solo & edit yourself.
