Living & riding in Thailand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ม.ค. 2022
Scots born New Zealander, former Professor of operations management. Early retired and living in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand. My videos focus on Thai living, house building, general exploring and motorcycle touring in South East Asia and New Zealand. I try to provide some background to places visited in addition to ride videos.
Indochina group bike tour day 20 (Siem Reap to Thailand border)
This video shows day 20, the final day of our 2024 Thailand/Indochina group motorbike tour. In this video we ride from Siem Reap in Cambodia to the border between O'Smach (Cambodia) and Chong Chom (Thailand).
(0m 35s) We ride through Siem Reap for a few minutes dodging traffic, and then into the countryside.
(3m 15s) Our first (and last of the trip) sightseeing stop is a 12th C. Angkor period bridge (Spean Toap Bridge), one of the many historic bridges built by King Jayavarman VII that spans the Royal roads leading out from Angkor to the far stretches of the empire. This one in particular would have to be the longest bridge known to exist in the Angkor lands that is still standing, weighing in with 28 arches and spanning at 150m x 14.5m. Along both sides of the bridge stood ornate naga balustrades. The ancient highway that this bridge sits on stretches from Angkor down south, all the way across the Cambodian and Thai border up to Prasat Hin Phimai (in present day Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand).
(5m 0s) We look at some of the tractors and motorbikes passing by, and the Cambodian people going about their days.
(7m 0s) We reach the border at O'Smach and say our goodbyes, after which I set off for Surin (and then Sakon Nakhon) alone.
Thanks as always to Gavin Colpitts for the cool pics, Win Nguyen @dttravelvietnam for drone and car footage and others for providing pics, and Mike Gagne @mikefreeriderAsia for leading the trip.

I was in Chiang Mai for a few weeks and rented a moped tried to learn how to drive on the left. I never would do it again. Happy bike ride tours and stay safe on the roads🎉
Easier on a bike than in a car, where the gearstick or shifter is on the other side.😂 But remembering to keep left when turning at junctions can be tricky on a bike. I have always lived in left hand drive countries (UK, NZ and Thailand) so driving on right is hard for me.
Great series Nigel, thanks for all the hard work making these videos.
@@mikefreeriderAsiaThanks Mike, was a great tour. Looking forward to the next one.

Thank you for watching 🙏 I live in Thailand so am a bit used to the drivers there now, but always try to be careful anyway. One day I will visit Philippines to ride, I hope.
Wecome to Cambodia as the country has come a very long way since its civil war was officially ended in 1998. Enjoy your bike ride tours. Peace out from a genocide survivor 🎉

Welcome to combodai 🎉🎉
Thank you, it is a beautiful country with great people.
you're riding very safely that's good. none of those were close calls 😂
Cheers 🙏👍
You should have used SHN-Phnom penh express way.
Thanks - I just looked it up - I reckon our organisers felt it might be a bit too dull of a ride. I see it's a toll road - motorbikes are allowed? In Thailand we can't use the toll roads.
@livinginnewzealandandthail5055 yes can if motor exceed 500cc
@@reamtevada7685OK we had a few CRF300s and a Versys 300 in our group, so maybe that is the reason. But good for people to know there are options. 🙏
Great journey.
Thank you! 🙏
Great ride, May I'm ask for some infor? What are all document paper do you need for your Bike from UK into Vietnam? I'm in US would like to take my bike to Indonesia and ride up to Vietnam. Thank you
Hello Minh, thanks for the question. I do not know about Indonesia. In relation to Vietnam the link attached has the following information about Vietnam - some of which will also apply to Indonesia). Specially note the requirement to use an agent or tour operator who is approved (Vietnam tightened up temporary import regulations in 2024). There will be people who tell you different things about this process, and they may well be correct, but it is best to have everything ready just in case. - Firstly you should own the bike - it should be registered in your name. Otherwise you will need power of attorney letter or similar. - You need a valid passport, visa, and a driver’s license issued by your home country (Note: an international driving permit is a useful thing to have as well). Vietnam issues e-visas which you can obtain before going there. 45 days validity I think. - The vehicle must have a valid registration certificate, a number plate from the country of origin, and a certificate of technical safety and environmental protection inspection (normally a roadworthiness sticker or slip). - Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD): A CPD is an essential document for temporary importation, allowing your motorbike to enter Vietnam without paying duties. - Foreign motor vehicles must enter Vietnam through an international tour operator who has obtained approval from the Ministry of Public Security. - Have your agent organise third party insurance for you - I don't know if it's required, but it is certainly very sensible. In my experience, this will need to be from a local provider (in my case, Thai insurance companies do not cover travel outside of Thailand). indochinamotorbiketours.com/travel-guide/how-to-enter-vietnam-with-a-foreign-motorbike-comprehensive-2024-guide.html#:~:text=Customs%20Declaration%3A%20Upon%20arrival%2C%20declare,30%20days%2C%20with%20potential%20extensions.

Brian maybe entitled to some residuals with his speaking appearances 😂
True! 😂
Nigel your a hero for doing this, I couldn’t, don’t have the patience and the where with all. A wonderful memory revisited.
I have never seen so many top end luxury cars, RR, Bentley, top end Mercedes, luxury top model Range Rovers, Ferraris etc, the gamblers or owners of the Casinos are obviously doing very well thank you.
Thanks Roger. I needed to make a log of the trip before I forgot what we did! But as I got into it I enjoyed digging further into the history. YT has documentaries on the most obscure people and things imaginable. You name it, someones made a one hour YT doco about it! 😂
A great history lesson Nigel, thanks for the research and the videos 😎
Thanks Gavin - a team effort improved by your great photos.
Safe ride everyone and enjoy your tour ❤

This trip was my 3rd time riding my own bike in Vietnam, you can never get comfortable riding there as the locals just drift across infront of you, at any speed.......................Cambodia to me I felt alot safer on the roads 👌
I have to agree 100% with him.
That was an awesome ride, and a change putting our bikes on the ferries for the crossings, keep up the good work with the videos Nigel 👍

Hi, thanks for the question - I paid 220,000 Baht new.
Can you share how much Eliminator costs in Thailand?
That's looks really nice. I have one more question. What tires did you put on? my Dealer says theres only roadtires for this maschine.
Hi. It depends on your model. In New Zealand I have a 2015 CB500X, which has two 17" wheel rims. That means road tyres are the only real option (as I was told - and fitted Michelin Road 5/6). But later CB500X models were given a 19" front wheel, which makes off-road or dual sport tyre pairings possible. So this one (shown) has had Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR, Michelin Anakee Wild and Dunlop Trailmax (shown here) fitted at various times.
The ones shown here are Dunlop Trailmax.
@@nigpaullewis Thank you very much, that helps me further.
Does the rear cause handle wobble like mine?
Thank for question, no I never had an issue with it. I was using soft luggage bags which were quite light, however.
are those 10cm aac blocks for the exterior walls? Looks like some 10, 7.5 and 20 cm blocks in different spots?
