I think it's programming of and from the mind reflection the conscious
In our waking state, 95% of the brain is subconscious. Only 5% is conscious, and its experience EMERGES from the 95%. When we sleep (dream), we're about 1% conscious (and the experience is emerging from the 99%). That's something to think about occasionally. Our waking state has more in common with our sleeping state than it does with 100% consciousness. I.e., we don't know what 10% (or 6%) consciousness is like. All we know is 5%. From that perspective, we think it's obviously either/or. "I'm awake, or asleep and dreaming." It's very possible that we're awake and dreaming (less). Our experience could be as contrived as our dream experience. How do we know when we're stuck at 5% of our brain being conscious (making sense of what emerges from the 95%)? How is that different than 1% making sense of what emerges from the 99% (when dreaming)? It's humbling when you think about it. We think we're walking around fully "there" when we could be in a less-dream state than when sleeping. Mildly not there in the same way.

@@RenfromBespin I'm glad it resonated. There's more to it. Benjamin Libet discovered (some years ago) that our choices occur about 1/3 second before our conscious mind says "I choose that." His discover got mired in debates about free-will (I think our free will is to choose to observe our emergent conscious experience, exercise a veto power, insert some "space," don't follow it as a habit, be mindful). Dr. David Vago has studied it further and found it's more like 1/2 second. To me, that adds to the humbling potential of what I said previously. It's not just that our conscious brain is small (compared to the subconscious), and that it's on the receiving end, but it's not a fast connection (by modern technical standards). The "moment" is almost over by the time our subconscious serves up the experience (in terms it thinks we need - gaps filled in, reactions ready to run with, emotions accompanying.). It's kind of like we're watching a movie screen, eagerly engaged with it. We're prone to that anyway. When you watch a movie you know it's still pictures shown fast enough to look real. You know there's a camera person just outside the frame (the lady swimmer won't really be eaten by that shark). You know the music is added for your benefit (to believe as you _want_ to). But, you choose to fall into it, believing, ignoring the details. It's like begging to be gaslit. :) Our conscious experience is a lot like that, it seems. We're mildy "there" engaging with whatever emerges from the majority subconscious - pretty late too. It's interesting to play a video with 1/2-second delay introduced between audio/video. It doesn't sound like a lot of time, but if you experience it that way... it's quite noticeable (when you're thinking "this is how I exist."). Like I said: maybe the only free will we have is to be aware, observing it as it is, not running with every emergent part of it.
