This unit was totally trashed and I managed to put it back into service today with 1 hour of effort. The next step will be working on the cosmetics of the missing horn and handrails. Thank you for watching and I credit a mentor TH-camr Trains with Shane to inspire me this far.

Why do I need to Reduce the weight of this N Scale Train Layout?

Here I describe the plan to remove about 4 to 5 lb of weight on the awkward side of the layout. Doing so will make a significant difference in the setup and stowage effort.

Using a tiny bluetooth speaker onboard the locomotive tender.....as you can hear in this video the whistle and bell are far superior to what a basic Lionchief provides.

I purchased this unit for $150 with original pristine box and manual. I am still learning the intricacies of the transformer button combinations to trigger certain sound events. I needed a budget Santa Fe Warbonnet with sound and this definitely hit the spot.

I work inside a storage tote to contain small parts
Good deal on that,check motor brushes,if they were run that hard likely need new ones,get from Kato USA..Theirs work

@@DesertHighIron Thank you so much! The high desert is a seriously underrepresented genre of train layout. I'm thinking about making another set of those trees. I still have plenty of materials to do so, I just need another set of the pewter armatures.
Maybe in the future I should ditch those cartoonish looking Woodland Scenics cactus and replace them with Joshua trees? I feel the other cacti are fine but the Woodland Scenics are another story.
@@ElJefeNScale-dj2wt You don’t see too many of the types of cacti represented in those woodland scenics out in the high desert. They definitely are around if you know where to look but i think they are more of an Arizona thing, i think they are called Saguaros

@@ElJefeNScale-dj2wtBoth are Union Pacific. Those seem to be the most plentiful. I need to find a mail car now! Just love the look of these behind a steam train.

Thanks! 6ftx30in. I show in older videos how the layout splits in half lengthwise for stowage. Check out some of my older videos....I specialize in having designed my three layouts to disappear in the same small bedroom when not in use.

1:27 Hello, what is the model you use for the railroad station ? Do you have floor plan or reference to share ? Here, on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, I don't find anything
@@BrunoPettorelli The station on this layout is also a Woodland Scenics built and ready model.

@@W_Grizzified I don't remember what the colors are called. I only use Arizona rock and mineral products. Including all of my ballast on all of my layouts. I do tend to blend different color materials together

@@watchtrainsnow1099 Yeah they did a great job on this one. The price point seems harsh at first but when I think about all the painting detail, interior detail, lighting, time and saving my eyes the price point of these buildings is worth it. I wasn't able to capture it well on camera but in person the flickering fireplace hits this one out of the park.
can this control several locos on the same track (as its speed, etc)?
I've been debating getting one of the Durango and Silverton sets, or the Penn. Boradway Limited set, just to get a set of old time passenger cars for "excursion trains"...
I was in the exact same mindset. However I didn't buy the set. I got mine from my local train store they got from a collection. Do a search on eBay for Overton passenger cars. Many Roundhouse brand new sets of 4 with knuckle couplers pop up...though they are pricey $100-150 they will look better than these Bachmann.
These are such nice units. I have two for my PC Conraiil line. Heritage units pulling early Amtrak! Perhaps your GM&O 109 is a run through via the Cotton Belt.

I have a couple split chassis Bachmann F7 SF locos that are good runners off eBay. They have Bachmann lettering on the fuel tanks, so definitely budget models. If you was screaming speed and poor slow speed try the old Lima locos.
I have a couple of those hoppers That I picled up over 25 years ago.

Just watched your NW2 video & this one was recommended; do you have two working layouts? Can they be connected? I'm doing an HO Santa Fe semi-desert layout; these both look great, esp. the cacti & suguaro. Going to check out your channel for inspiration, or just to steal some ideas!
@@MBouffant Three layouts. Stand alone and not connectable. They were all designed to be stowable when not in use.

So, can you run DCC/NoSound locos with the sound box? Would they sync? If I had to run dual mode DCC/DC locos in DC mode, would I have to give up all the motor controls and lighting?
@@LeonKolenda yes this would work with a dual mode DCC locomotive. You would still get default DC sound from the locomotive. However from what I've heard I would refrain from running a DCC on DC even if it's dual mode. I have heard of premature board failures running in DC mode.

Soundbox, being analog, is intended fur DC use only? Will one soundbox give sound to more than one loco at a time? Thank you
@@monkshillpottery No, one box per powered track. You can still double head them on the same track if you want though.

I prefer to avoid weathering my rolling stock, and locomotives. That way if I want to sell them later on, they look new, I get more money that way.
Nice smooth loco there! You are DC when usingbthe soundboard correct? Your soundboard video shows the DC power-packed by it. I would like this Kato NW2 with DCC in it for sure
Everything I do is DC only. Older videos demonstrating the Kato Soundbox cards are using a conventional throttle transformer. Now I use the Kato Smart Device Controller. It gives a DCC like interface on the phone but it still DC.

Well, the first sound that you picked. I guess you already know if you had a nice big old UPAC 6000 that’s the perfect sound definitely the wrong engine that has it the notorious turbine yelp love that sound.

Does it come with a sound card?
@@SonLe-uz5kb The version ending in part number 101 does, the 102 version does not. The 101 was an earlier release of the box. There is not difference in the boxes themselves.

I'm fortunate that in the UK, we have a good choice of steam locos made by Graham Farish and Dapol and others. However, I've just purchased the Bachmann USA Prairie as it's considerably cheaper than British Models at half the price. I wonder if British Locos are cheaper to buy in the USA? My DC layout, "Little Storping," is freelance, so I run anything I want to. Watching your demo convinced me to buy the Prairie.
Hey, can you tell me the name/part number of the cable/plug which you use to connect the Power pack to the Sound Box (Blue Plug on the left side of your Sound Box). I always thought that you have to plug it into the power pack itself or use an external power source. I didn't know that an "extension cord" exists. But if I search for extension cord, I can't find the part you are using. Greetings from Germany.
@@Surprise528 it is called the Kato 12V DC power adapter. It requires hook up to AC terminals on a standard power pack.
Can you play sound from a dcc loco? Or does sound come from the soundbox
@@SonLe-uz5kb This is strictly DC. You can run dual mode DCC locomotives with the Soundbox. You cannot trigger/control on board DCC loco sounds. The Soundbox detects motor load on a DC locomotive.
