    Something fundamental has changed in the hardware architecture. The GPIO hardware has been off boarded from the main bcm chip over to their custom RP1 chip. For simple gpio interactions libraries like GPIOZero, and GPIOD exist and for simple hardware pwm you can get two channels with the rpi-hardware-pwm library. I haven't yet tried microphones or audio yet with the Pi 5 but I very much enjoy using it. Great video and robot!

    • @DanMakesThings
      @DanMakesThings 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @Optimus333
      @Optimus333 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DanMakesThings Thanks for the reply! That sounds cool, so you basically made your own solution instead of a power bank? Was the power bank never an option? Because I'm currently considering whether I should buy the pi 4 or pi 5 for building a portable robot, like yours but much more basic :) Do you think I could start out with a 5v/3a power bank at first and still build a capable basic robot with sensors and a camera? Or will I most probably need to make a custom solution like yours for the pi 5?

    • @DanMakesThings
      @DanMakesThings 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Worth a try! I chose the approach I took after a few failed attempts with other things in the past. The challenge was introducing servos because the spike in power usage would affect the pi.

      If you use ROS I'd say it's more of a companion than a competitor from what I've seen. There are already quite a few ROS modules that have been made available for the Viam platform so you get the best of both worlds. I'd be interested to hear from anyone using ROS on Viam for their input.

    Can you make the legs and neck as a different module, and connect a iphone/tablet onto the robot for simple telepresense? I was thinking you could put solar panels and a battery outside, and have the robots wander around in the back yard and at night they would go back to the "tree" solar panel charger to sleep. You could then get a chinese company to mass produce it.

    • @DanMakesThings

      Sure, it's modular so you can reconfigure as needed. You'd have a challenge with the 'wandering around the back yard' bit, but wheels might work ;)

    I have calibration routines for any of my creations that use servos. I save these calibration values to eeprom rather than copy hard values into the code. The pro-mini has 1k of eeprom. More than enough to hold this data. I also have an offset value that is added to the commanded angle to correct for the small error that may exist in the positioning of the servo horn. On startup, I check a ProgVal to see if the eeprom has calibration data in it, then load those values into the array for use whenever the servos are moved.
