Document 72: Hours 24 Hour Chinese Restaurant
I have been drawn to the programs on the NHK (Japan) US channel. The sensibility is so different from US/UK programming. What, I believe, most Americans would experience as slow I've come to view as endearing, human. Here, a selection of scenes over 72 hours at a 24 hour Chinese restaurant in the Tokyo suburbs. I think I've only seen this one episode of Document, but other programs, like SomewhereStreet and Railway Journeys have a similar quality. There is a cultural difference in the voice-over choices on some of these programs - high-pitched and cutesy doesn't work for me. I'll keep an eye out for others you might like to watch. Again, I do not own this content - I'm sharing to provide it a wider audience.

A very interesting biography. I share it here to give it wider exposure than it likely has had. I do not own the rights to this 2019 American Public Television assembled documentary. Somehow the recording missed the opening minute of the broadcast - apologies. It doesn't affect the value of the piece. However a copyright infringement was detected at 36:18 for footage of Salvage and about 45 sec...

Missed the Paddy portion...the rest is a capsule of the time. Note how often Mr Ginsburg regards the camera. I do not own the rights to this material.

    It's an absolute travesty that Hitchcock never won an Oscar. He's been gone many years now but I still consider him to be one of the top 5 greatest Directors in the history of film. Just a phenomenal Director & a master storyteller w/ a quirky, sly sense of humor. His films & the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series still stand the test of time against anything in film today. I have the complete series Alfred Hitchcock Presents on DVD & watch them all at least once a year; they never get old. And my favorite AH films are The Trouble w/ Harry, Marnie, Rebecca, Rope, Family Plot & Frenzy though of course I love all of his films. Thanks for uploading.

      Yeah, plenty of nominations but no wins. Rather absurd. He must have really pissed off the Academy. 🤔🤷‍♀️

      I agree. I remember discovering this as a teen. I have zero interest or respect for Hollywood/The Film Academy because of this. Most "winners" are pop culture fads, political compromise, money motivated or personal power plays. Artistry & Honoring creativity is not really practiced.

    Um, we don't get to see the full show with Paddy Chayefsky as the first guest. This was several years before Nework came out, but Chayefsky's screenplay was probably the most masterful and intelligent script ever written for film.

    Is it just me, or is Dick Cavett slightly abrasive with Isherwood? And from the start, which makes me wonder if he disliked Isherwood for some reason. He seems much gentler, more tender, almost, with Richard Burton or Paul Simon. There is nothing obviously dislikable about Isherwood, except his misogyny and his anti-semitism, but they aren't in evidence here (much).

    I recently found a pdf form article on a Czech magazine that reported, in detail, every day of Ginsberg's time in Prague.. it was'65. The students were fascinated by him, even named him their *Král majálesu* Their King of May. He spoke even less Czech than myself and the students at the time were not all mostly fluent in English, as they are today (studentý, ďakuju vám, robíte mi veľa zábavy) but they all understood and communicated well. After a few nights of being followed home with students, his notebook of poems and notes that he had "lost" was recovered by StB. Promptly, he was expelled from Czechoslovakia. But The students had been very much influenced and excited to want to know him and his experience as a Beat. Who wouldn't be? I am so fortunate to have known and finally been trusted by people who were there for that. And there when the soviet tanks came a few years later. (And oc, after the VR) They were very stoic about the recollections. Very private. man, did I luck out in the marriage department. Unforgettable days of my life with the best people. Not only Prague, but Brno, Česka Lipá, over to Pardůbice. Now, even my own days are long ago. Just like Allen's time.

    Wait what? I thought Allen Ginsburg was a highly educated and enlightened person? However, his cognitive dissonance here is striking. On the one hand he claims to be a practitioner of Hinduism, albeit with some Buddhist undertones, yet he seems to be advocating for communist China and the Soviet Bloc. What about what the Chinese communists did to the Tibetan Buddhists and Hindus after they took control in the 1950s under Mao? How can you be a Buddhist or Hindu for that matter and defend the communist government of China and the Soviet Bloc? Does he not know what happened to homosexuals under communist regimes? Me thinks Mr. Ginsburg smoked waaaaaay too much ganja and perhaps did waaaaaay too much brownstone at some point. He is totally burned out and thoroughly discredited at this point!!

    • @forensicdar
      @forensicdar 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it has to do with enlightened-or people or those trying to attain enlightenment, is people not necessarily being consistency machines. But I do see what you've laid out here and how some schizms (?) arise. There sure are a lot of them with a lot of people today. I thought he was, at the time of his death, not a discredited person.

    So that's why the U.S. fought so hard to keep the Soviets out of Afghanistan. The west lost control of south asian opium to the communist bloc, they didn't want to lose Afghan opium to them as well.

  • @jbsamakis
    @jbsamakis 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The man walked out and started playing a harmonium while laying down a mantra. Then he started raving about the CIA's involvement in opium smuggling from southeast Asia which ended up being, more or less, true. Wild stuff, as Carson would say. Imagine that happening on a late night show these days.

    Cool, I am not sure about paddy chayefsky a guru, but I read your book about the half eaten sandwich the maid threw away, and there was controversy about that. Also, moral endeavors about sexual encounters outside and inside social media, the constitution gives you a hands up, including the bill of rights, but when it comes down to criminal attacks taken from the media that is where you draw the line. The heads get the idea that the future is evolving to a whole new dimension, but when a little frail girls or women getting hurt taken from Television you need to hold back. Humans are susceptible to anything, gay, drugs, vision, so we need to pay more attention to what's around you. Teach behind the scenes.
