Sweet, thanks for putting up this scene in full. A gripping performance. A fantastically dark and strange, twisted movie. The book is excellent as well.

I was only 8 when this came out but this scene always stuck with me. It really speaks to the generation that was at its peak at the time and their fears of aging. The divide between that generation and thier parents was massive. To them it was the yawning chasm between youth and vitality and the perceived complacency and impotency of "old age". I remember how turning 40 was such a big deal to the boomer gen. I don't think those of us who came after them feel the same way. Aging in grace is a beautiful thing.

In the book Charles holds a bible, Mr. Dark takes it away from his hands, shows it can't hurt him, blows cigarrete smoke on the library's "no smoke" sign then throws the bible in the trash and keeps on insulting him on that way, I just thinks its an amazing scene

Watching this scene again at 48 when I was but a 9 year old boy watching it for the first time. Sends shivers down my spine.

Mr Dark is pretty much the Coachman from Pinocchio, the Child Catcher, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and Satan himself wrapped up into one character.

He actually said “Oh, oh 40 and hear you’re old, old heart.” Mr. Dark is telling him to listen to his presently old heart before he takes more years off of the deal. Hope that makes you feel better.

When I first saw this movie in the 80’s it intrigued me. Now I’m 39. You listen to the spoken words in this scene-hell, the whole movie, and realize it affects you psychologically, tinges your heart with unrest. God bless the real shit

As a young man this really resonated with me.. 1983, 21 gone!... 1993, 31 gone!.. 2003, 41 gone!... 2013, 51 gone!... 2023 and so on. Powerful scene.

Yes! I'd watch it every year and think, Well, I'm not THAT OLD, I'm still in Mr. Dark range. Watched the scene after a couple of years, NO LONGER IN THE MR. DARK RANGE! Guess I'M "LOST"!

Monumental homenaje al maestro Kiéslowski. Desgarradoramente bella y acompañada de una de las mas hemosas melodías de Z. Presnier. 💕
