He knew because you did not walk around the umbrella. In that location, the pathfinding checkpoint between the umbrella and the wall is closer to the wall than you were going. Because you did not take a turn and kept going straight through, he knew you were not using NPC pathfinding - therefore, you were a player. Hope this helps!
