Ribbon Cable Latch Replacement for All DS, DSi, 3DS, 2DS Models (New, XL)
This is a quick guide on how to replace ribbon/flex cable latches on all DS models. This is specifically for backlight, touch, circle pad, microphone and 3D ribbon cables.
If your connector does not look exactly like this one, do not follow this guide! If you have the black, one piece, non-latching connectors found on "New" consoles, this will not work. You'll have to have a professional solder a new connector on for you.
If your connector is larger and looks different, follow this guide:

Does this work to replace the volume button connector that broke this same part?
Thanks,I broke the audio one and almost gave up, but ended up here and saw the pushing the metal up (I completely forgot to do it) and ended up fixing it
THERES DIRT UNDER YOUR BLACK FRAME NOOO
OMG....I have been trying to put my clamp back on my switch lite for the last two hours. I saw this video suggested on a post and go it on in 5 minutes. I was about ready to take it apart and send it off for repair......thank you so much!!!!!!
What a great video! Finally some actual repairs instead of "change part"
Thanks :D
huge help, I ended up using a box cutter to correct the pins and it worked great. So happy to have my 3ds working again
This Nintendo is a pain in the a** let me tell you
I broke the latch to the touch screen digitizer on a 2ds while I was repairing the charge port. Do these latches actually provide important pressure needed for the ribbons to work properly? I am thinking about doing this replacement myself, but I don't know if it has that kind of functional impact. Can you help explain?
I wish I found this before I bent a couple pins trying to get this dang piece lined up and back on. I couldn't figure out how to get the side bits to line up, didn't even think to bend them out of the way
Excellent tear down, good sir. o7
i dont have an exacto knife, but will a scalpel work? Ive been trying using a razor blade buttheyre very flimsy
Hi! Just wanted to thank you for this video. Have yet to start on my own disassembly but this seems extremely informative. Based on your (or anyone watching this in 2024)'s experience, is there any point prior to complete disassembly where you can test if any of the new panels are working?
Thanks for the kind words! You can take the motherboard and connect the bottom LCD to it, top LCD to the speaker ribbon and both remaining cables to the motherboard as well. Do note that the screen cable needs to be folded. That way you can test things out, just make sure you don't short anything out or damage the fragile cables. Also, without a circle pad connected the cursor will jump around but that's normal
Hey. Don’t know if you’re still replying to these, but I’m having an issue. The power led remains on for a bit, but both screens are black and I hear a speaker pop. What does this mean? My cables all look okay.
One of the screen backlights are bad. Either the panel itself, or the cables or the connector. Do note that the top screen receives power through the speaker ribbon so it needs to be in good shape as well
does anyone have a direct link to buy these latches?
saved my life ! thank youuuuuuuu
Thank you so much! It took me about 2 hours and lots of frustration but I fixed my 3DS!

Importantly what do I order because my son has a the Model called "New 3DS XL" please help send links to reputable dealers
Finally someone explaining it for idiots! Thank u very much❤
cries in already removed the actual connector
got sent here by a good samaritan on reddit lol my god you are a lifesaver i already fucked up the top screen ribbon cable, so ive gotta replace that, but thanks to you i dont need to dump anymore money into my silly little DSi!! :D
Si ya cambiarle la pantalla a una DSi es un reto a la paciencia y requiere precisión de cirujano... se lucieron con la de flex que le pusieron a las New 3DS 😂
I don't think I will be able to do this, I shake as soon as I handle small objects
Hello, Thank a lot for the video, it's verry well explained and one of the few talking about the not XL. I have a question for you. When I power On my New 3DS (not XL) the blue light goes on for about 4 sec and then go off and there is no activity on any of the two screens. When the light goes Off I can hear a very very weak sound like a speaker shuting down (but nothing as loud as the "pop" sound I have heard on othere 3DS repair video). I disconnected and reseated every ribbon but no change. Any Idea ?
Unfortunately that could really be anything. Just for reference, the n3DS and n3DSXL have very similar electronics, so reading up on stuff about the XL is still very helpful. Just assembly/disassembly is very different, which is why I made my video :D If you can, I'd recommend getting a second console that is known to be working. It doesn't have to be perfect, maybe you can find one that works with a cracked screen, bad touch, bad buttons, etc. But that way you can swap parts back and forth.... I'd say it's most likely to be the speaker ribbon, then top LCD, then bottom LCD. No guarantees though :)
so the latch broke and Idk what to do. I can't afford another latch on eBay since most of them come with the mother board is there another way to fix this?
Buy just the connector on AliExpress. Costs about 5$
@@neotil1 got any tips for identifying the correct connector to get?
after following this process, no 3ds doesn't turn back on and led lights turn on as well, even when plugged into a charger. Any ideas to what the issue may be?
Try replacing the button board maybe
I was only replacing a circle pad, but I love how clear your instructions are, and the detail of when certain screws are all the same size. Thank you!
at 31:35, my power cable for the power board doesn't seat properly. The ribbon cable goes fully in on the left side, but not the right side. My ds doesn't even power on. No led light or anything. Any clues to why the ribbon cable may be not seating properly?
Sorry for responding late. If you have bent pins in the connector, the cable won't fit in all the way. It's very difficult to bend the pins back into shape, even with a microscope. Unfortunately a new motherboard might be the best solution for you, unless you know someone that will solder a new connector on for you
Great guide, managed to replace the screen without any issues following this video.
Tysm for this video. I was repairing for a friend and I have no clue where the latch went. I found an extra from a donor and got it fixed. Huge props for this video. This is the smallest object that has given me the biggest heart attack 😂.
where did you buy the ribbon cable latch please??🙏🙏
AliExpress, eBay, etc.
I know this video is old, but it's still relevant. It's great and I only have one criticism. When putting the lens back on the screen, it is much easier to put the screen into the top housing first, then put the lens on so that it's perfectly in place. Both pieces can only go in one way, and this ensures that the lens is put on perfectly without having to readjust it to get it into place.
You're 100% right. I usually do it that way as well. Idon't remember exactly but I think that since I reused the old adhesive, it was very easy to see where the lens is supposed to go. And with that in mind, sealing the display from fingerprints and dust is my #1 priority :)
This video and your other one on the wider pins have saved my ass and two 3DS consoles. Thanks bud really appreciate jt
why don't you remove the power cable first?
I traded my new 3ds xl for the new 3ds, because I like how the small one feels. the XL hurts my hands when I use it. but the one I bought has some lines on it. so I would mind as well watch this and get a feel for replacing the screen. you will be a great help (I haven't watched the video yet lol)
IMPORTANT QUESTION: If i dont repair the screen (mine is not that badly damaged) is it possible that the console damages itself even more? Please i need an answer!
I'm sure that only the screen will get damaged more. but if you continue to not repair it. the console itself should be okay.
@@russell9995 thank you for your answer. So if I dont repair the screen it will just become even more damaged at the point that I wont see what it displays anymore? Or will it stay like its current state even if I dont repair it?
@@A.R.2049 yes, but only over a long period of time. shouldn't worry too much about it
@@russell9995 thanks a lot
Quick question, is this the only solution or is it possible to solder a new one in? (or is it not possible to remove the piece the pins are attached to?)
You can solder a new connector on but it's much more difficult imo.
Thank u ❤
is the whole process the same for the new 3ds xl?
Hey man! i have a small question, i have a n3DSXL with a capture card installed and both screens have gone bad, i think the lcd screens broke, is it harder to replace the screens with a capture card installed? or is the process the same?
Do you have any link to purchase these spare connectors?
Hi! Great video, it really helped. I have a problem, the bottom shell doesn't close properly, specifically in the leds part. Do you or anyone have any advise? I really made sure everything is in place. Thanks in advance
What I did was put whatever remained of the latch on the connector, then fastening it down with iso-tape. It works. It probably would have worked without the latch too.
Do you or anyone know where to get shells for these? NOT the XL, but this normal size one.
