American Motors: NASCAR's Forgotten Auto Manufacturer
มุมมอง 4.9Kปีที่แล้ว
Although the auto maker has cult classic status today, not many know that AMC (American Motors Corporation) once raced in NASCAR or that it was the genesis of the NASCAR Cup Series giant, Team Penske. Accumulating five wins in it's run, AMC may have a short history, but an important one. Join me in this short video essay as we dive deep into the history and lore of American Motors in NASCAR! #n...

This guy could've been the next Skyler Page, the next Chris Savino, the next Justin Roiland, the next John K, or the next Kyle A Carrozza but he has certainly proved us wrong these past five years and that is certainly something to be proud of!
If you come to Northerm ohio lemme know and you can play it.
Larry Hess ran a 1966 Ambassador in some NASCAR races in the mid '60's so the Matador was not the first AMC to run in NASCAR.
There was a machine at the Mancinos pizza and subs in Grand Haven mi when I was a teenager, as for game play: it honestly is the closest to sim you're gunna get from an arcade machine. The closest comparison I can make is like original nascar heat hardcore mode
As of 11/18/24, there's a full size version with the roll cage currently in operation at the Rack it up arcade in Canton Ohio
Kyle was already famous in the racing world before he ever came to Nascar.
Nice video. FYI, My Great Uncle was Roy Abernethy. He ran AMC in the 60s. He championed large cars like the Ambassador, which was his baby.
Played it in 2019, its real good, sadly the building was shutdown in 2020 due to the pandemic. If someone can go to Colombia and help me track down whoever owned the place it would be real good
Also I have a Nascar racing arcade machine near me
i believe i played this game once as kyle petty at talladega back in 2015 as a kindergartener. at no place better than dover motor speedway in the fan zone. there was a long line to play this game. unfortunately, it’s not there anymore, but they have some daytona usa 2 cabinets in the white lightning bar and arcade tent in the fan zone during race weekend along with some pinball machines.
Worked for a Pontiac/AMC dealer in 74. Owned a73 Gremlin with the 304 v8 back then. Also owned a 77 Matador coupe with the 360. Wish I still had both of them.
Don't care what anyone says. IMO, one of the most badass looking cars ever to turn a lap!
Also the AMC javelin that tom reffner drove in Wisconsin short tracks in the superamerica blue knight #88 . Still have the photos of the car. Tied dick trickles record of 67 late model feature wins, in 1975🏁🏁
Thanks for posting this video. Loved the matador in the iconic red white and blue with mark Donohue and bobby Allison. 🏁🏁🏁
This is awesome!
@@Alphabetmafia88 thanks! 😁
I hate when people do a video claiming to be the know it all and they get so many facts wrong. Thumbs down bud best you get a real job away from here.
Here in the St. Louis Metro East. This game was in every "arcade" around. I played it at the local family fun center(mini golf/go cart place). It was there until the place closed down because of covid. My kids played it at Chuck E Cheese. I can't remember all places I played it, but I did play it a lot. I remember it being difficult. The cars were not easy to control. If you got slowed down even for one corner, you were not going to win. The races were pretty short too. I don't remember that 70s Petty car being in the game.
Wow, pretty cool. Tell me, what was the engine they were having trouble with ?
Glen enjoyed the video a few incorrect things but the NASCAR information dead on.
Certain police departments had a couple 😅😅😅😅😅😅
AMC, was very much for my daddy.
honestly imo Nascar arcade Sega: I sleep Nascar racing arcade Global VR: REAL SH#T
I wonder why AMC didnt race the Javelin in NASCAR
Pony cars rarely ran in Nascar.
Too small.
They did in the Grand American Series with driver Jim Paschal.
The game was broadly Daytona USA Arcade; but with more Sim based handling (as games like Gran Turismo were seeing a trend to more sim based games). Daytona, needed super smooth steering or you lost to much speed and if you lost the draft forget it. You needed to "find a blocker and head for the end zone" until you got into about the top 5. Richmond was way easier - 10% lift in the corners, wait for the car to balance and settle - power out. Watkins Glen needed studying to get through turn 1 as for real speed you needed to power slide it. Rest of the course wasn't difficult. Completed all 3. Couldn't play the hidden course as there hadn't been enough plays on the machine to unlock it as it was play locked. The Petty car was an unlock but wasn't worth it. All played at an Arcade in London; England. Sega missed a trick - Initial D Arcade was card based around the same time. They could have had more courses - had a season based mode and cards used for saves. Was fun but the time limit mode was way harsher than Daytona USA.
YOu claim that AMC is your favorite company but you've got a bunch of facts wrong......The Gremlin was AMC's all time record breaking sales leader being the one and only body style....that sold 800,000 units. No other AMC model was able to do that. AMC big sales increases in 73, 73 and 74 were all due to the AMC and contributed to the three very profitable years...............The Matador wasn't inspired by European Compact cars, that's a totally wacky claim. It was inspired by GM fast back midsized cars and Ford like the Torino and Chevelle which were it's direct competitors, not the pictured Nova, Maverick and Dart???? It also won the "Best Style Car of the Year" award by Car and Driver because of it's great looks. .btw, if you're going to lift stuff off my channel, at least give me credit.
Hater🙄
Hudson didn't merge with a French Company? What kind of claim is that? They was AMC.....AMC via Hudson left Nascar in 1956......AMC made the Hornet up till 1977. AMC was partially owned by Renault, 46%, but was a traded on the NYSE.
I said “Fridge” They built fridges
I also thought you said French. ;)
Let’s go I wish you luck man you’ll get there.
Thanks brother! 🤘
3:51 I was super ecstatic when I found out that you used my gameplay! Happy to be (kinda) featured! I feel famous now kinda lmao
Haha! Nice! Looking back, I should’ve credited every channel I got footage from. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to play it myself so I had to resort to using other people’s gameplay. Lol
Thanks Glen! Many folks don't realize AMC was successful in many forms of auto racing: Trans Am, NASCAR, Formula 5000, and many drag racing classes.
I own the slightly smaller version with the CRT instead of the projection screen. The biggest problem with NASCAR ARCADE is SEGA’s Hikaru system PCB. I had an email conversation with a guy who repairs SEGA arcade games and used to work at SEGA USA when the Hikaru system games came off the boat; to summarize and simplify: SEGA spent a lot of money on research and development of an amazing piece of hardware that could play some amazing games but goofed up when assembling the PCBs and didn’t flux the boards properly which caused the solder to form cold joints and vibrations would make the surface mount “BGA” (Ball Gate Array) chips to break their solder joints and fall off the PCB, often tearing up the traces since the chips that usually broke free also had a large heat sink attached to the top. Even just shipping the first batch of games was enough vibration for them to arrive in the USA broken. SEGA started shipping them with hot glue added to brace the chips but because they get hot during operation, they also soften the hot glue and the chips would break their solder joints again, but now it’s because the game owner or operator dared to move the game cabinet. Several great games operated on Hikaru hardware, including Star Wars Pod Racer, Planet Harriers and Brave Firefighters. I haven’t seen one that is still operational near me but I have communicated with several collectors and operators who have been fortunate that their Hikaru PCBs still work. If you can find a working PCB, you can’t even ship it without risking damage and many of them have become so expensive due to their rarity that they aren’t affordable even for a business to justify. I’ve been patiently doing research and trying to find a way to resolder the broken joints on my game but it’s extremely difficult due to the way BGA chips are connected; all of the solder is under the chip and heat sink with no exposed connections. I’ve also looked into swapping in a PC running the game in the Demul emulator but, as you mentioned, it’s so buggy that it’s barely playable and doesn’t seem to support the force feedback and other control inputs. I played the game in a few public locations years ago. It’s a LOT of fun considering that they chopped a NASCAR race down small enough for the typical arcade racer experience. I did wish it would play a bit more like a racing simulator or at least had a way to play longer and more like an actual NASCAR race where you could lurk in the back for half the race and draft yourself up to the front to win. NASCAR ARCADE expects you to keep passing and improving your position and time to keep playing longer, but it’s usually a 3-5 minute game; The pace laps take longer than that in real life. As much as I liked Daytona USA and the other NASCAR style arcade games, SEGA’s NASCAR ARCADE was so impressive that it became a priority to get one when I opened my arcade. I’m still determined to fix it or at least get something else operating in the cabinet until I have the ability to repair it.
I actually know where one of these are located, there's an arcade in Batavia Illinois that still has one of these games, unfortunately it is been down a lot for maintenance recently so I'm not sure how long it has left. Apparently there are less than eight of them in the wild currently operating in the United States.
Next stop, Illinois.
i believe there is one in new jersey
