I enjoyed this exchange! My impression is that the CMOs and their teams have to (unfortunately) earn the trust and respect of the CEO and other peer organizations first. I have always tried to go beyond the perceived typical role of the CMO who should be responsible for (just) lead generation, campaigns, SEO and trade shows, to instead have a more strategic and directional role within the organization. I have had the opportunity to manage global B2B marketing teams in large and small organizations, and my message to them has always been: "We will prove that we bring value to the company by 1) being an effective resource to the sales process working closely with the Sales and BD teams, 2) accelerating the innovation process by working closely with the R&D and Manufacturing teams to create and launch new, differentiated, higher value products, and 3) being a key advisor to the CEO and by designing and helping deploy a growth focused strategic plan that is aggressive, but at the same realistic and executable, including M&A. As for the comment that some marketeers are sometimes not qualified to be in front of a customer, that is a weakness that sooner or later will impact negatively, one way or another their ability to grow, and that needs to be addressed through any of the processes discussed during the video. I remember what my boss told me during my first job a Product Manager, he said, "the key to success in marketing is to be curious, be in front of the customers, ask good questions, and then go to work on creating better solutions for their problems".
