I haven’t seen the movie or play, just listened to the song. It is self-indulgent and kind of pathetic and whiny. But it’s written from the perspective of a young girl with big dreams and no experience who falls in love. So this is how she experiences these things. Those of us who have lived through our tens and twenties remember the raw pain of being that age, trying to make our way, and watching dreams and fantasies dash into cold hard realities that would often not bend to our wishes. I don’t particularly like the song on a gut level. But I appreciate it for its accurate depiction of that difficult epoch of life that no one talks about: The transition from late adolescence to adulthood.

Deeply underrated movie and show, with a painfully realistic depiction of marriage, relationship disintegration, career struggles, and self esteem. I do have to admit, the ending for the movie for me is far more powerful than the end of the stage play...because here you actually get to see him write the note to explain and leaves her knowing he has hurt her, with a haunted expression on his face.
