    Katayama was superb in 1994 for Tyrrell. A forgotten hero of F1.

    It's interesting to hear Peter say that Adrian Newey gave the Mercedes team advice to make the CLR able to race. I had heard he told them to park the cars, and upon googling it, I found a couple articles saying Adrian told them not to race.

    A childhood hero of mine. In the winter of 1986, he participated in a BBC-televised, Toyota-sponsored event where F1, rally drivers and up-and-coming talents competed in a rally stage, race and an auto-test. My father was invited as his firm was a customer of a sponsor of a competitor on the day. Participants as I recall were: Derek Warwick, Martin Brundle, The Earl of (Johnny) Dumfries, Stig Blomqvist (!?!?), Mark Lovell, Gary Brabham, a certain Damon Hill, I forget the others…but I gazed like a stupid, impressionable 15 year old at the hero I had been watching and rooting for in the preceding F1 seasons as he leant backwards up a rally-prepared Toyota Corolla somewhere near “Tumbledown”. I had to ask my father to stop walking and let me look. Of course, now he is just another English “bloke”. So I avoid worshipping people as people. But…poor Derek was stupidly unlucky in his career and was sooo close to an F1 victory on a number of occasions 84-89, IMO the equal of Mansell in talent and similarly gritty in his approach. And as a human, well, more…human. I can’t ever imagine having a normal interaction or conversation with Mansell as he is just so weird. Warwick is a normal, down-to-Earth Englishman. On that same day at Brands Hatch in late ‘86 I got to speak to Johnny Dumfries a number of times, a complete charmer and who recognised me as an insecure teenager and brought me in to his day on a number of occasions (eg “you are in charge of my crash helmet bag until after the race. Don’t lose it, hand it to me when I am out of the car” or similar…). A real charmer who made a working class kid like me feel comfortable in the presence of a hero F1 driver. I’ll stop waffling now. Back to Derek, recall running onto the track in ‘84 at the British GP as he finished second. The top three doing the circuit parade in the back of a converted car (Ford Capri) with standing space for winners to take the salute of the crowd was a thing back then. The top three? I mentioned Derek. First was Niki Lauda, third in the Toleman was a young (and to that point obscure) Ayrton Senna da Silva…sigh, what a day that was…

    Graham played his part in the 70/80/90’s UK MSport scene & seriously punched above his weight as an independent. Went on racing in the 90’s in the Malaysian series & believe only lost x1 race. He’s still got his cars from back in the day & believe still has 1 of his Group A BTCC shells, would love to see it built again. Question I would love to know did his Rs500 that got stolen ever get found? Beautifully prepared cars & did very well, sure his Broadspeed years set him up well for the future. Fact he’s still in business & still doing well with Ford models is a testament to his expertise & work ethic. Old school MSport guy & a legend.

    A fantastically engaging and entertaining interview (as I knew i would be). Bus driving's loss is definitely F1/journalism's gain. I've always had a lot of time for what Matt has to say and he will most definitely be remembered as a positive force. Nice work Rich on securing this one and hope you keep adding to your amazing collection of chats in the future!

      @thehardcompound2310 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly Andy is quite closed when it comes to racing, and doesn't really do interviews. We'll see what we can do.

    • @stephenking9271
      @stephenking9271 ปีที่แล้ว

      This seems to be the case, worked with some ex Rouse guys & must be something from that era. Always thought Andy should write a book about his journey through his Motorsport years. He played such a huge role in fact mostly him alone in driving the BTCC to what it went onto become & those that know once the Sierra evolved into Cosworth guise ARE really took off literally. The grid grew & ARE virtually was supplying everyone bits to compete with & beating works teams himself was remarkable. Having worked in Motorsport for around 25yrs now I still cannot understand how Rouse did it. Boss,Team owner,Engineer,Driver,Machinist & Mechanic rolled into one trust me that does not exist anymore. If he wrote a book it would sell out & I hope you can twist his arm & get him on your show. Motorsport community & enthusiasts are ready & waiting

    Colin Turkington will always be my number 1 BTCC driver but I became a big fan of Dan's after that 2019 finale and 2020 opener. Horrible way to lose a title, he didn't deserve that but the way he bounced back instantly in 2020 was pure class. I still think it's only a matter of time before the title is Dan's

    5:25 pm EDT... Hi Katherine, it's your "Believer", from Detroit, MI. Thanks for taking time to conduct this in-depth interview... Definitely, the most diverse resume in racing, no doubt.👌 BTW, will there be a special paint scheme, for your helmet, at Indy, or will keep it normal status quo? Best Wishes, for the Month of May! 🤗 P.S. ... A, "Radar Detector"? "You"? 2 Funny! 😂🤣😂🤣

    Good lad Jerry, your remembered well in the racing community and who isn't without a few issues and poor decisions, that is often the result of a life fully lived. I really do hope with the historic scene thriving as it is that we might one day see you on full boost again and my guess is you would be very well received.
