Shakotan Town is located at the tip of the Shakotan Peninsula, which protrudes to the northwest in the center of the west coast of Hokkaido. The town developed as a major herring fishing ground from the Meiji Period to the early Showa Period, and the guard houses, tunnels, and old streets of those days still remain. Shakotan Peninsula is included in "Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru National Park", the sea of Shakotan is designated as the only marine park in Hokkaido, and "Shakotan Peninsula and Cape Kamui" is recognized as a Hokkaido Heritage.

From the starting point, a 770-meter walkway called "Chalenka Trail" leads visitors to the tip
of Cape Kamui, where a magnificent view of the Japan Sea and the "Shakotan Blue" can
be seen from both sides of the trail.
At the tip of Cape Kamui, the "Cape Kamui Lighthouse" watches over the rough sea that was once called "a difficult place for maritime
traffic." At the "Kamui Banya" facility in the park, the only existing "First Class Stationary Lens" that was once used at the Cape Kamui
Lighthouse is on display, and is still valuable in Japan.
Underwater observation boat tour shakotan😍
The glass-walled underwater observation room at the bottom of the boat offers a fantastic view of the sea. The boat departs from Bikuni Port and takes about 40 minutes to go around Gome Island, Cape Bijano, and Takara Island. The tour allows you to see the varied underwater scenery up close, but what is most impressive is the crystal clear Shakotan blue. The contrast between the many coves and cliffs along the coastline is also spectacular. On the way back, you can enjoy feeding the seagulls that follow the boat.
