In this video, I teach you how to find the length of two segments that are tangent to the same circle. We can do this using the external tangent congruence theorem - which states that 2 tangents that are drawn from the same external point are congruent.

    Why is the denom's variable handled differ'ly than its counterpart? I can correctly bal.equations through reduction with the var. as the numerator. Confusingly, the same approach doesn't work with the var. set as the denom.

    • @Eat_Pi
      @Eat_Pi 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question! In order to solve for a variable, we need to isolate it. The easiest way to isolate a variable in the denominator is to move it to the numerator. However, you could technically still solve for a variable and keep it in the denominator, but it's a longer, more complicated process. For instance, we can take the problem I used in the video: 30/x = 10 30 is in the numerator x is in the denominator Instead of getting rid of the denominator, lets get rid of the numerator. In order to do that, we can multiply both sides of the equation by 1/30. Why? Because we're trying to get rid of the 30 in the numerator, and we can do that by reciprocal of 30, which is 1/30. 1/30 * 30/x = 10 * 1/30 On the left side, the 30 on the top and bottom cancel out and we're left with 1/x On the right side, to multiply fractions just multiply straight across, so we get 10/30 which reduces down to 1/3 We're left with 1/x = 1/3 To get a balanced equation, the numerators and denominators have to match. The numerators match (they're both 1), so for the denominators to match, we can now see x = 3, then we get 1/3 = 1/3. So as you can see we get the same answer (x=3) but with several more steps. That's why, generally, moving the variable to the numerator is the easiest way to solve for it. Hope that helps!

    If x>3, how can we substitute the value 3 along with 4 when its already given x is bigger than 3, its only possible id x> or equal to 3 right? 3:44

    • @Eat_Pi
      @Eat_Pi 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Fizaaahhh Great question! You're right, 3 > 3 is an invalid statement. However, the reason we plug in 3 to evaluate the point is just so the graphs lines up properly. If you want, you could plug in something really close to 3 like 3.0000001, but you're basically going to get the same answer which is why it's easier if we just use 3 to evaluate it. Also, when graphing our line on the corrdinate plane, we make sure we put an OPEN circle because thats how we show the graph doesnt actually touch or include x = exactly 3, but that it does include all numbers greater than 3. Hope that helps 👍

      While it is a little harsh, I will say this: if you don't "get" math in school then a career that doesn't need math chooses you and not the other way around. @bradleson509 Good question! When adding or subtracting, the variables stay the same. When multiplying or dividing, the variables and exponents can change. Here, we're adding. So it's kind of like saying, what's 5 apples + 7 apples? 12 apples Not 12 apples² However, when you're multiplying, then yes you need to multiply the numbers AND the variables so: 5x*7x The numbers: 5*7=35 The variables: x*x=x² So combined = 35x² Hope that helps 👍
