#shorts Pottery Tips: How to get the last bit of Clay up into you Pot Wall on the Pottery Wheel
มุมมอง 42ปีที่แล้ว
If you are a beginner, sometimes you have a big ring of clay left behind on the bat when you are bringing up the wall. This is because you need to put pressure on the clay directly at the bottom where it connects to the clay. People are afraid to do this because they have accidentally decapitated the clay. I am making another short on how to avoid this...stay tuned!

#shorts Pottery Tips: How to Avoid Bunching on Neck of Bottle
มุมมอง 38ปีที่แล้ว
You are necking your pot in and you see that the rim is all rippled. This usually happens because your wall got too thin from being allowed to open out too wide. When you throw, make sure you continue to neck in and keep the opening only as wide as your hand and no wider. Centrifugal force can cause this, so think about slowing down your wheel. The thinner and taller you get the more easily thi...

Making A huge Clay Sculpture with an Different Coiling Technique: Sonosaurus

I call this technique the improvised coil, flat coil, or taco technique. This sculpture went missing after I gifted it to a University in Los Angeles...sadly. However, this is how I made it with the improvised taco/coil techique. It was about 5' when finished and I had to fire it a $10k Blaau kiln, because it was too big. I Miss you my friend. As a teacher, I experience students who are always pushing the boundaries of what can be done and crying because their piece gets ruined. Of course, you are exactly right, but as beginners, I could have them throw the pot on the ground and learn the lesson of loss, or I could show them how to fix a problem. Realistically, you should only use this on something that took you days to complete, like something intricately carved, or a sculpture....this is only an example that was fast and easy.

    Will this work for porcelain ? I have 2 vertical cracks whoch developed after drying on a mug which had gone out of shape and I had re-rounded it when it was just beyond leather hard. Thank you.

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can work, but porcelain is super difficult. The problem is it has a really good memory. If you accidentally knock it even a little, it will crack there. I would just re throw it, but you could try.

    Why?

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the late reply. It's the only way to get the shape just right. If you form it by coil, it usually ends up deforming and it is difficult to dry that way. This way the entire piece firms up on the outside and then you empty out all the damp clay. It uniformly dries and retains its shape very well.

      I was wondering the same, why vinegar?

    • @ashleymcdaniel3939
      @ashleymcdaniel3939 ปีที่แล้ว

      so, i found this in another video of theirs "Water on its own can cause your clay, when drying, to actually crack apart. Imagine the dry desert, the reason there are so many cracks is because dry clay swells when it gets wet and clay that is too wet looses its ability to stay together. If you use a medium like vinegar, it causes the clay particles to slip together, not swell."

    • @sleepyrina
      @sleepyrina ปีที่แล้ว

      have any of you tried this?? and is the crack visible after firing or is it gone?

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it is usually smoothed out and no longer visible other than sometimes a bump depending on how good you smooth it out.

    bubble......off center....ah ah ah

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, it's a very difficult process, just keep trying. Make sure your coils are clean and not too lumpy. when you make the coil be sure to roll without pressure, just the rolling motion will extend it and you will get less of a lumpy texture. Lumpy coils lead to bubbles. I'll try to put up a special video on the recenter pass, that will get your clay re-centered.

  • @stickermigtigger
    @stickermigtigger ปีที่แล้ว

    I gotta ask; why coil, especially on a wheel when you could just throw it, get better consistent walls and center and be done in a much much shorter period of time. I get why primitives coil; they don't have a wheel. It's ok if one just wants to do it that way. Just curious.

    • @robw1571
      @robw1571 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more clay on the wheel the harder it gets. There's a definite physical limit based on your form, skill, and strength. If you look at a lot people who make large pieces they try to throw as much as they can as a base then either add coils to make it larger or throw a second, third, etc. vessel to attach to the one below.

    • @stickermigtigger
      @stickermigtigger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robw1571 Watch skinny Asian potter videos. A lot of them throw 25kg or more; huge moon jars in one throw. Others throw two section moon jars and join. I guess if ya gotta coil that's fine; I'm not knocking it; just don't understand why other than strength issues but I've seen skinny little Korean girls throwing 25kg or more without coiling. I can't do 25kg (yet) either. :-)

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tried the 25 lb technique, but never got above 2 ft. I also like my pots thin and with that technique I was always left with thick walls. It's all about practice. And I am definitely not a girl who wants to show off my muscle. I work as a mechanic part time for my husband, so I know my limitations...lol. With this technique, it is not as hard on my body and I can get a pot to around 5' tall, and I know I could do more. But, with the 25lb technique, I just haven't practiced it. :). I love cats, so no offense, but "there is more than one way to skin a cat".

    • @vncstudio
      @vncstudio ปีที่แล้ว

      For large pots,, the Onggi method is the most efficient method to get stronger and thinner walled pots with very low physical effort. It can also be done with flat slabs instead of coils. That is even faster. However, the above video does not show the full Onggi method which also involves using a wooden paddle and anvil to compress the clay and make the walls thin.

    • @TinyClayForge
      @TinyClayForge ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you want to get more out of the attached coil, you need a thicker coil. Thin ones work, but then you have to make so many more coils.

    Instead of trying to "match" cut, just take the wire thru both at the same time, and it's perfect. So, wire cut both ends where they meet at the same time, and they line up perfectly. 😘
