Larry was my flying buddy. I've been fortunate to become the caretaker of his J3 Cub. Jamie Jr. ( JJ ) is Larry's grandson. He's a fine young man and we had a lot of fun.

That color scheme and markings suggest it was a Navy NE-1, not an Army L-4
The original data plate would disagree. "L4B 1943"
Beautiful music!
I always loved the L-4’s. Shame they’re so dammed expensive now.
Is it a genuine military one or made to look like it? Either way super cool cub. I love my dad’s super cub.
It's a genuine L4B
that is really nice where you going to restore it at? 👍🇺🇸🙋🏻
We have an airport shop. It'll be a preservation of what's there. Only repair / replace the normal consumables, hoses, tires, etc.
@dynamicdabbling5386 thank you everything you might be doing at the Chino airport I'm in California
😮😮👍👍👏👏
Take good care of it! What a find!!
first time seeing a wingless airplane.
Roll rate is off the chain.
One pull! No surprise.
Could not be any more awesome than that. What a historic treasure. Thank you for sharing your videos.
Beautiful. First flip!
Really looking forward to the restoration videos of this fantastic airplane. Very sorry for the loss of your friend. God bless Mr. Lankford, you and your crew.
Fuselage cleanup is going well. Did an oil change and fresh fuel, checked the rockers & cylinders and she cranked on the first blade in 8 years. Plans are to preserve the airplane as is. All that's needed are the usual consumables, tires, shocks, hoses, etc - some new hardware and a fresh annual. Very proud to be the steward of this historic machine.
Hey Dynamic. Thank you for responding. I just have a couple questions. Is this a true L-4 survivor and are you guys based in Georgia? I ask about Georgia only because I live in the Macon/Warner Robins area.
@@stevesp38 Yes it is a true L-4 Serial # 43-1421. We are based at Cedartown / Polk Co 4A4 with a herd of Cubs. I flew my J3 over the North Edge of Macon a couple of weeks ago on a trip to a fly in in Wrightsville.
WOW. Cool that it is a true L-4. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Thank you for sharing your videos. I actually live in Kathleen GA, a suburb of Warner Robins. It is close to Perry which has a decent GA airport. If you are ever down this way would love to see the airplane. I am a retired USAF aircraft mechanic so absolutely love anything with wings. Worked F-15's and U-2's. Now I mainly play with RC airplanes. I am a member of a club who has a flying field in Fort Valley.
Looks like the covering is still intact and all it needs is a cleanup and engine and controls checkout before it's flyable again. Sorry about your friend and the former owner, but I'm sure you'll honor him by getting this bird in the air again. I love the Piper L-4. I've flown in one and I've built and flown a 1/5 scale radio control model of one, and at the moment have a 1/4 scale model on the workbench, intended to be a display at a warbird museum when completed. I'll be following this series to see the end result.

@@dynamicdabbling5386 How is the fabric? Are you going to scope/pressure test the cylinders? Thx for bringing us along. 😊😊😊 John Ken
@@JohnKenIRB233 Fabric is just dirty and a little faded in spots, but checks out good. Engine internals look great. We've run it twice, total over an hour. Logs show a little over 300hrs SMOH. One more run and we'll check compressions, but they feel great when turning it through. Then we'll pull the engine for some detailing, engine mount, firewall, systems etc.
@@dynamicdabbling5386punch test on fabric? Ceconite/fabric? I’ve helped strip a J-3 - labor cost is problem.
Looking forward to seeing your next videos of the restoration of the L4. Nice Video!!
Now, that is some kind of somethin! I can still hear good ole Ricky in his Dodge Dart telling it his way.
Every time we say something about something with this plane we use Ricky's voice.
Great find

This is a 1943 Piper L4. Decommissioned long before Vietnam. Your Dad probably flew a Cessna L19. Honorable service non-the-less. Thank you for your comment.
@@leeroyholloway4277 yea you are probaly right there. I have a picture of the aircraft, to confirm what model /type. I will have go find it. He flew helo's , this little plane or similar was their squadron observation air-craft. Not sure if they picked observers by shifts or just volunteering. Something I would rather ask him in person rather than over the phone. Apologies for deleting my first post about the circumstances for my dad being in a similar plane.
@@chrisperrien7055 I forgot I was on my "Lee Roy" channel. I'm also "Dynamic Dabbling" and I just bought the vintage airplane in the video. I specialize in that type, civilian and military versions. (Piper Cub)
Nice job on the video. 😁👌🏼
Sounds like it was a bittersweet rescue. But what a great way to honor your friend 😍🙏
Дуже гарно.
Well done!
Now THAT is how you make an aviation video. Absolutely perfect. Love your ride
Always amazing watching your cool projects come to life!
!!!WOW!!! AWESOME 👍🎵🤠👍
Thanks much for this upload, and the excellent quality of the video. Was so in love with this lady in the late 80's very early 90's. Then there came the ludicrous controversy over the song "Maybe I Mean Yes" in 1991 which had been the CMT Pick Hit and her highest debuting song even on the charts, and her career was never the same. Her brilliant new album after that "Getting It Dunn" in 1992 which she produced should have propelled her to Mega Stardom, but was totally shunned by Country Radio and it didn't help matters that they did a very poor job of selecting the singles. So much great material being left unreleased and largely undiscovered by the listening public. And they were too cheap to produce more than one video. Holly ended getting dropped by Warner Brothers and it completely broke my heart. Then I fell madly in Love with Lari White, another incredibly beautiful woman and song writer with an awesome voice, and she too had a very silly video controversy over the song "Wild At Heart" in 1996 which had been the CMT Pick Hit video from her awesome new CD which she produced "Don't Fence Me In" and ended up getting dropped by RCA, even after her previous album had gone Gold. Didn't matter. The new one was good enough for Multi- Platinum sales given the proper premotion and marketing. I thought how the hell could this happen twice? I still love both these ladies and always will. Erie Parrells in their careers and both passed away from cancer just 2 years apart in 2016 it was Holly and it 2018 my precious Lari.
Beautiful pictures.. american part like fieseler storch lg
Great testimony Frankie. I really proud of you. I never thought I'd see the day where you were worshipping the Lord of all Lords. Keep on keeping on my friend. Maybe one day I'll find my way back to him.
Is that our dear ole Frankie stage left??
yep
I'm familiar with that bird 😀
Enjoyed this very much. I also have tools going back to the 1900’s
Holly was a beautiful soul with a beautiful voice. My good friend, Rex Garner is on bass guitar😎
Isn't the J3 just the sweetest thing you ever flew?
Sweet!! Love my J3. Love the grass. Made for each other.
That _landing_... not quite a 3, not quite a wheelie, but smooooooth like BUTTAH... that's how it's *done.*
thanks... I wasn't totally confident with the airspeed reading, so I was playing it safe and letting her find the ground.
To fly is everything.
Would love to be able to talk to you. Just getting a Fergy up and going at the local airport and have some questions. If you have time.
Great plane! 👍
May she RIP
AWESOME job cuz!! 😁🤙🏼
Would have liked a picture of the dash.
Hi Mike, Sorry I didn't get any more details. This airplane is no longer based at my airport. Thanks for your interest.
I have flown many happy hours in the two Baby Ace airplanes that I owned in the 1970s. One was a 'C' model and the other 'D' model. For some reason my 'C' model flew much nicer than the 'D'. I finally damaged my 'C' model in an off airport landing when the landing gear broke hitting a gofer hole. Of all the airplanes I owned my Baby Ace was a favorite... tied with my 90hp clipped wing Cub. I finally traded my D model toward an almost new Citabria 7ECA.
WOW!!!! 😁 What a joy it must have been for him ti fly his Pawpaws Cub. He reminded me so much of his Pawpaw. You can tell he’s a Read. He look like a pro. 😁👌🏼
That was a gyroPLANE. 😁
Yea I know. There's this guy I know who hammers that into everyone. I was identifying as European that day.
Hey Chief, Enjoyed the first flight in the ole farm Cub yesterday!! Nice flying work in the Ace too!! Still laughing my rear end off about the "Red Line" airspeed comment below last year some time!!? Think you can link to my channel by clicking on my Icon Chief!?
Thanks. What is the benefit of this upgrade?
"I personally recommend the Pitch Trim modification for Tango Gyroplanes. It is a more robust solution than the OEM mechanism and may reduce the possibility of a failure of the trim spring or trim attach cable that could lead to a sudden, unexpected nose-down attitude. I have flown this modification and find it almost identical in feel to the OEM version, with the exception of the slack removal required on the initial trim setting after takeoff. I prefer to know the slack is there and that trim will not impact pre-rotation or cyclic control during the takeoff roll." Jon Carleton -- Gyroplane CFI
I believe Dennis Fetters designed and manufactured these back in the 80"s at Liberty Landing Airport.
Correct. Company ownership changed hands a couple of times, and I believe again recently. Parts and support are still available. Thanks for commenting.
@@dynamicdabbling5386 Is Dennis still around? He used to test his Gyro rotors by throwing frozen turkeys into them at 300rpm, lol.
I love her voice!
