Rae Lakes Loop via Kearsarge Pass | Kings Canyon National Park
6-day backpack trip on the beautiful Rae Lakes Loop via Kearsarge pass. 53.4 miles.
Our journey began by ascending Kearsarge Pass, and we spent our first night camping at Charlotte Lake. On Day 2, we retraced our steps back to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and John Muir Trail (JMT), descending to Lower Vedette Meadow. There, we connected with the Bubbs Creek Trail, eventually reaching the junction with Sphinx Creek.
Day 3 led us down to Bailey Bridge, where we crossed over the South Fork of the Kings River. Our path then wound through Paradise Valley, passing the enchanting Mist Falls, until we settled at the Upper Paradise campsite. The following day, we braved a chilly river crossing and continued along the Woods Creek Trail, eventually reaching the junction with the PCT/JMT near the Woods Creek Suspension Bridge.
Day 5 was a leisurely stretch, taking us to Middle Rae Lake. Our campsite offered breathtaking views of the lake, the Painted Lady, and Glen Pass. Finally, on the 6th day, we tackled our longest mileage-12.1 miles-ascending and descending Glen Pass and Kearsarge Pass before returning to our car at Onion Valley. It was an unforgettable six days immersed in the stunning beauty of the Sierra Nevada!

NAP was built as OAP is frequently covered in snow even late in the summer although probably not this year. So maybe consider going up NAP and coming down OAP. Not sure I’d want to go up OAP with a full pack. Hope that helps!

      Hi Mary, thanks so much for your kind words! I checked and I do see the Rae Lakes loop on All Trails. For a 5 day trip the Bear Vault 450 or Garcia bear canister should be fine, if you take dehydrated dinners, etc. Andrea and I use the Wild Ideas Weekender Bear Canister, lightweight but expensive. We never had to carry more than about 1.5 liters on the Rae Lakes Loop, longest stretch was 3 or 4 miles, usually crossed water sources much more often. The PCT section from Warner Springs to the PVC is a great one, we did it a few years ago with some friends, see: th-cam.com/video/RFOH8LOBKSc/w-d-xo.html

      Definitely one of the best loops in the Sierras I believe. Not sure about best in the US as I've not done any backpacking in the Cascades of Washington or the Colorado rockies which are both spectacular - I imagine there is some great loops there and many other places.

    I've been researching this loop and I must say this video has been the best resource I've found so far. If you have any other resources you used to plan this trip would you mind sharing? Also, I had a couple of other questions for you. It seems like the restrooms were open at the camps even though the camps themselves were closed. Was that the case? I can't imagine there was any running water at the camps though, correct? How were the bugs? I only noticed a small part of the video where you had bug nets on. Can I take that to mean they weren't too dense in late August?

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside
      @RickandAndreaGetOutside หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @ehrankhan8581, I did find information about the loop in the Wilderness Press publication "Your Complete Hiking Guide: Yosemite National Park" by Wenk & Schaffer very helpful in planning this trip (see trip 43). The restrooms were open at Glen Aulin and May Lake however they were closed at Sunrise, Merced and Vogelsang. No running water, we filled up from creeks or lakes, always careful to filter. Bugs were not too bad, but there was a fair bit of mosquito activity at May Lake and Merced Lake. Minimal bug activity at Glen Aulin and Vogelsang. If you have the time, suggest you stop at Sunrise Campground, great spot. That 18-mile day from May to Merced was long and tiring. IM me through Instagram, @rsarpolus, we can exchange emails, I can forward GPS tracks, map, permit information etc. Glad you found our video helpful!

    Ok, here’s a genuine question. Why do people like to wear shorts when backpacking? Wouldn’t it increase the risk of the most important parts during a hike being injured, scratched(which may lead to infections), and bitten by ticks (or snakes or any other critters)?

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside
      @RickandAndreaGetOutside หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. Andrea almost always wears long pants, I usually opt for shorts, especially when it's hot as it was on this trip. In the Sierras most of the main trails are well maintained. Occasionally you come across some trails that are overgrown or have downed trees, long pants help. Long pants especially help with mosquitos, but I've found tics on me even when wearing long pants. Rattlesnakes probably could bite right though the typical light weight hiking pants we wear. We do a lot of off trail hiking in the desert during the winter, almost always opt for long pants do to all the pokey stuff. So, it's a personal choice, based on your comfort level and trail conditions.

We spent one night at Sentinel campground, Roads End side of trail head, then proceeded clockwise to Upper Paradise, then Woods Creek, Middle Rae, Vidette Meadow, Sphynx Junction then back to Roads End, 7 days, 6 nights, we weren't in any hurry at all. @@Heretic10001 thanks Dave! I've had problems with blisters from wet feet in the past so tried something new on this trip. Took off my socks and took out the insoles then went across. Afterwards got as much water out of the shoe as I could, dried my feet and put the socks back on and put the insoles back in. Feet felt a lot drier, no blisters.

    Great photography. There is also a really good campsite after crossing Buck Creek and climbing uphill a little bit. Nice and private with no neighboring spots. I came down with whatever Asian flu was in fashion on a week long hike once at the point of no return. Hot weather, but I soldiered on and it seemed to burn itself out by the next day. Glad not to have become a burden on my partners.

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside
      @RickandAndreaGetOutside 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @dcalcano late May is probably not a good option. Depending on how snowy the winter was, Tioga road may not be open. Sometimes it does not open till late June, early July. Early in the season you may encounter snow on the trail and difficult water crossings. Suggest you plan on a late June/early July trip at the earliest just to be safe.

    What a gorgeous trip did you guys make! An inspiration for us to do next summer. I have 2 questions… maybe you can answer them. First: the permit. Was it difficult to get one for this area? Second what is the brand of your tent? It looks very lightweight…

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside
      @RickandAndreaGetOutside 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ruudenriannevanderstar6483 Hi! Our tent is the Zpacks Triplex and it is indeed very light, about 2 pounds. Permit was not too difficult to get, it is a lottery system, we applied months in advance and were able to get the date we wanted. Thanks for watching!

    Beautiful video! Random question, I was planning a similar route for early Fall, and on the reservation site it states if you have the Glen Aulin to Cold Canyon permit you cannot camp at the Glen Aulin campground. Which permit did u both obtain? thanks!

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside
      @RickandAndreaGetOutside 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks @jyc313! The permit you need is the Glen Aulin trailhead (listed as 22A on the Yosemite NP Trailhead Map). That is separate from the Glen Aulin > Coldwater Cyn pass thru permit (22B). Hope this helps!

    we just did the hike to LYV and might to this loop next summer, assuming need to enter the lottery for next year right? if so what entry and exit points to you guys enter? where did you actually pick up your permit after winning the lottery and did you stay a backpackers camp before starting the loop hike? Sorry for all these questions but just trying to plan ahead. thanks and keep the videos coming, they are really fun to watch

    • @RickandAndreaGetOutside

      Hi Wayne - yes, we got a lottery permit - entry and exit was the Glen Aulin TH (22A on the Yosemite Map of Trailheads). Do not select the Glen Aulin Pass Thru TH). We did not stay at the backpacker's campground as we spent the night in one of the valley lodges before we started hiking. We drove in through the south entrance to the park, so we stopped at the Wawona Wilderness Permit Station to pickup our permit. Thanks for watching our videos!
