As a 36-year veteran of Decorative Art... I applaud Bella and her family. The sky is the limit as Bella applies her business skills to her artwork and craft.

I believe if you can’t stop creating artwork, then keep going with it, but doing decorative art and design is a great way to support oneself. I graduated with a fine arts degree from Syracuse U and did sell some pieces but needed a way to support myself. I worked in visual merchandising, interned with an interior designer and then became a textile artist. When I got asked to paint a mural in a home, everything came together! I put myself out in the world and took more classes in the decorative arts. I have had a very lucrative career and truly can’t retire because there are not enough young people to take it over. The big difference between this and creating for yourself is that you have to work with another person’s vision and collaborate to produce a product which brings them joy. I feel very fulfilled in this aspect, and I still create art for myself, and sell those pieces also. Another perk with decorative arts is there is flexibility in one’s work schedule to fit other important items in one’s life. I was able to raise my kids and also attend their special events, while having a very fulfilling and lucrative career. I still live my life this way.

A person with a MFA degree stands about a .001% chance of supporting themselves by creating and selling fine art. And that is only after starving for several years as you make a name for yourself. Architectural decorative painting is more of a skilled craft than an art where you are working on commission for a customer rather than pursuing your own vision. After 40 years of pushing paint and plaster around, I can attest there are a LOT more customers for that kind of custom work than there are for my paintings. At least I still get to earn a living working with color, composition, flow and aesthetics rather than pushing lattes at Starbucks
