These are some of the many questions we tend to ask ourselves when we are faced with a dilemma with different levels of parental pressure and shaping our lives. In today's episode, we discuss common scenarios we can find ourselves in with our parents, and how can we overcome the pressure from expectations and pursue our dream career paths and life goals.

    Very thought provoking. I'm in the U.S but I suspect that your experiences will resonate with our residents and attendings. The modern move (at least in the U.S) for students to pursue what were conventionally less competitive and less lucrative specialties like psychiatry in favor of their work-life balance is a clear indication that the new generation of physicians won't put up with the past system anymore. On the matter of not really knowing what you were getting yourself into, I find that medical school admissions committees have been taking that factor more into consideration recently in order to combat physician "burnout". My school is thankfully very supportive of student mental health and sabbaticals. Our admissions has favored slightly older students since they typically have more life and clinical experience to understand if medicine is the right path for them. We'll see in 10 years if this helps, but it still feels like a bandaid rather than a real solution. After all, you can't exactly know what it's like to be a physician until you become one so maybe we're just getting better at selecting the people who will put up with the abuse. Optimistically, I'd say that our generation of physicians will implement large, positive change from inside the system.

    Nice and helpful video. I'm thinking about leaving medicine but I’m in the middle of my 4th year with the rotations in Argentina. In my country doctors are bad paid with less than 1000 U$D per month. Despite money I think that its going to be harder to be happy and feeling fulfilled while being a doctor with the great workload plus the bad salaries. I'm really interested in coding and programming so that would be the path that i would follow if i quit. I have invested 7 years in this career wich its free in my country you dont end it with a bill or something like that, i'm 25 years old now, quiting is not an easy desition. What would you recommend me?

      dont leave medicine can have private prac if you become surgeon or cardiologist or radiologist if you can get these branches dont leave you will earn more than engineers also you are late for corporate career you will lag behind your peers in company also coding jobs will go away in near 10 years with ai already doing code.Dont be fooled in usa all doctors earn same so they quit

    I’m not an immigrant, but working in health care myself, I would NEVER recommend it to my own kids (too much debt and moral injury involved). I did encourage them to study engineering because there are so many different job options available with that degree.I have told them “once you can support yourselves financially, you can do whatever you want. Go back to school, travel, etc”

    US PGY1 here-- never heard of the term "clerking" (?clarking lmao) used 😂 we would however "see the patient" instead (all elements implied--cc, hpi, ros, meds, allergies, fhx, shx, and physical exam), and subsequently "staff" the case (i.e. present the case with one's assessment and plan) with a higher-up/chief/attending

    medicine can make money, but the time and sacrifice it gets there, is not to everyone's taste. Surgeons and Radiologists for example make upwards of 500-600k/year. but the process of getting there is painful and long, and many might not even get there even if they tried. It's a system that's designed to be a "king of the hill" or "if you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen" type situation, which is not conducive to people who may not be in the right space or circumstance to handle this type of pressure.

He says the same, that he misses the feeling of passive interaction between co workers and patients... But now that he is a established TH-camr, he would consider working 2 days per week as a junior resident and dedicate the remaining days on TH-cam

    I think quitting medicine is really hard for a couple of reasons: so much time was sacrificed, the job can be incredibly rewarding, the pay is not terrible, but the stress takes too much toll, and it's just a job, it shouldn't make people miserable- I started working recently as an independent doctor and I've never been more stressed in my entire life. Thanks for the inspiration, gives so much hope!

    • @JustinSung
      @JustinSung 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true, it can definitely be stressful. For me, it was less about stress and more about alignment of effort to my intended goals and life. I've definitely been under more stress as an entrepreneur and business owner than I was as a junior doctor. So I see it more as what type of stress is worth it for you.

As someone who had left the formal education system and was a professional, I’ve found the transition tough at times and the feelings of uncertainty can be quite discouraging. I agree sooo much with the whole personality alignment concept. I started med school in 2015 & by the time I was in 2nd year I already started to notice that this just wasn't for me. I decided to just brush it off cause pressures of life/family etc & like just up & leaving med school is not an easy decision. So I stuck around & got into my clinical years in 2018 hoping that would clear things up for me. That's when shit really started to hit the fan because I was really just forcing myself to carry on with this thing that wasn't for me & my mental health went 6 feet under. I still managed to finish 5th year though I did fall behind by a month or so due to mental health deterioration. My final year was supposed to be last year but realising that I had already fallen behind and the thought of sticking it through beyond the 6 years for something I didn't want just didn't sit right. So at the beginning of that year I transferred my credits & opted to finish with a BSc in Medicine rather than becoming a doctor...just after I made that decision the pandemic hit & we were all sent home with the year becoming super chaotic & 6th year students still being sent back to the clinical platform in the midst of it all. The timing just felt right to me & when you know you just know. Anyway sorry for the rant, it's just really validating to see that I'm not alone in recognising the incompatibility of medicine with my personality. Great podcast by the way!
