Bodyscan Introduction | DEXA Body Scan (UK)
Bodyscan is the UK's only company dedicated to accurately measuring body composition with DEXA technology. Since 2015 we have performed over 23,000 scans!
Bodyscan will tell you exactly how much fat you have now, how much you need to lose, the amount of food you should eat every day and how long it will take to get there.
Visceral fat is ‘bad’ fat around your organs and increases your risk of heart disease and other nasties. We’ll assess your risk and how much you need to shift with diet and exercise.
If you're inactive or naturally skinny, chances are you have low muscle mass. We'll measure how much lean mass you have now and what you need to do to get big. Or bigger.

In this video, we shall talk about DEXA Scan & Visceral Fat. So let’s start by defining what is visceral fat VS subcutaneous fat. For most people who come to Bodyscan, getting in shape means reducing the amount of body fat that sits just underneath the skin. This fat is called ‘subcutaneous fat’. Hello, I'd appreciate a response very much. I do a monthly scan at my Planet Fitness gym. I'm a male, 68, 6'1/2" and my mass is 184. Muscle mass is 91.3, body fat is 29.5 and visceral fat is 11. Is that level of visceral fat ok?
I doubt you are having a DEXA scan at Planet Fitness. If you are, you shouldn’t be having them every month. The metric for measuring visceral fat is unique to every measurement device so I’m afraid your reading of ‘11’ means nothing in relation to a DEXA scan. Unless you’re being scanned on a Hologic DEXA scanner like the ones Bodyscan uses, there is no correlation. Sorry!
Hello. Thank you for your reply. I obtained further info: their scanner provides a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). There is a breakdown of scan results that indicates my visceral fat level as low.

Can your visceral fat be too low?
Wasted $100 on a dexascan. Machine said i was 31% bf. Lmaooo. Thats obese. Im 5’9. 175 lbs. wear a small in workout shirts and a small in shorts. Pants size is 31/32.
It literally has an error of 1percent. I'm sorry to tell you, but youre fat. I'm fat as well. I'm 183cm tall 90kg with 34 percent bodyfat. You wearing small stuff doesnt mean your bodyfat is low, it just means your lean body mass is low and your fat percentage is high.
Your explanations are simply excellent. Thanks for sharing all this info. I specially liked your breakdown of the LMI and ALMI in the other videos discussing Attias book
You're very welcome! Thanks for the thumbs up!
@@Bodyscan Thanks for your reply :). Regarding the VAT / viceral fat, I was looking at your "Bodyscan Data" tables to determine in which percentile I'm in. However, I'm not sure at what data of my DEXA should I look at, at the VAT volume (cm3), area (cm2), or weight (g)? in your tables what units does the "Est. VAT visceral" have? Also, somewhere I saw that a VAT area of under 100 cm2 was Ok, is this true, or what would be the upper bound for a healthy patient?
Can you give me the link of the Chilean study of 1400 people with an average age of 74. Thanks

Not very helpful, sorry.
Does this help? Each manufacturer is different, so will onbly be of maximum value if your scan was done on a Hologic Discovery. bodyscanuk.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Infographic_2024_1_page.pdf
Thanks❤.
Agreed, 100%! One of the most important decisions I have made in my health journey.
I saw a couple of reaserches that compared MRI and dexa, and the results were a pretty low correlation between the two. Have you seen them? What do you think about them
The test I had done three months back showed visceral fat as 10% ... Don't know what ideal visceral fat should be
"Heavy boned" may indeed be a false conception. That raises other questions. A friend came waterskiing with us. When we put a waterski belt on him, he sank completely under the water. Two belts, only the top of his head touched the water's surface. It took three belts to keep his head above the water's surface. He was not athletic, a smoker, fairly unmuscled, a bit "big boned," but not obese. We were all surprised that he sank like a stone. But why?
Very helpful - especially the online calculator for plugging in DEXA results to get a more accurate BMR estimate. I had my scans done here in Australia (where they didn't provide all the extra analysis charts etc) and plugging in the LM, FM and BMC figures it came up with a figure that was pretty much 'spot on' where I thought it was (from tracking my weight and calories for the past six month of weight loss and exercise regime). Surprisingly my LMI from DEXA scans 5 years ago and last month (both 24.6) is pretty good (esp. at age 62), so my *only* problem was carrying about 40kg of FM. Walking (20K steps/day), resistance training (2x or 3x per wk), and caloric deficit (around 800 cals/dy) have reduced that to 18kg FM (18% BF), and I plan to get to about 10kg FM (about 13% BF) by the end of the year, then focus on recomp next year. Hopefully this will fix up the NAFLD I found I had earlier this year.
What is the unit you use for VAT, grams? Or is it normalized to height like BMI?
There are three units for visceral fat - mass (in grams), volume and area. While mass is the most logical, we use area as the standard metric, as the values themselves are smaller than those for mass and volume and guidance thresholds have been placed on them (100 and 160cm^2). The unit is immaterial because the lower the better.
I've had a scan in Denmark where they give VAT in grams. In my case it dropped from 400 grams to 220 grams in 5 months. I'd like to match that up with your benchmarks. I'm 188 cm tall.
@@hanshurvig Unless the scan was done on a Hologic Discovery then there is no correlation. If it was, then 400g of visceral equates to about 83 for our metric. 220g equates to 46, which is pretty good. You lost 45% of visceral fat, which (I'm guessing) might have seen a 30% reduction in total fat mass (which is a lot for five months). That is NOT saying it might have dropped by 30 percentage points (eg, from 45% to 15% fat) but by 30% (eg, from 25kg to 17.5kg of fat). If you signficantly increased exercise over that period then the rate of fat loss may have been smaller. Just a guess!
Thx a lot, I'll check the brand. My fat went from 19 kg to 12 kg, just as you estimated. I exercised and gained a bit of appendicular lean mass.

A must understand video if you want to increase muscle and reduce fat.
Just to be a dick. Kilograms measuce mass, not weight. The SI unit for weight (which is the force due to gravity) is newtons. The English system ifor mass is Slug. The english system for weight is pounds. So we always see on a box of cereal (net weight 1, poound, .4 kg. That's wrong!
Of course you're going to say it safe, it's what you're promoting. The fact that you've had your covid shots and other vaccines, shows me that you really aren't that health conscious.
There is something misleading when Atia says that a shockingly high proportion of people who break a hip or fracture a spine vertebrae die within one year. Many if not most of the people in this statistic are already old and fragile frequently in old age facilities. They don’t die from the hip fracture but rather from the complications that result. if you are otherwise reasonably healthy fractures of the hip and spine are not lethal even for seniors. Otherwise, I agree both with getting a DEXA scan and taking early preventative lifestyle adjustments that he recommends. While it is difficult to avoid a spinal fracture if you have low bone density you can minimise your risk of a hip fracture through strength exercises, flexibility and balance work. Most hip fractures result from falls so the goal should be to eliminate falls as well as building bone mass.
Good vid. Trying to book into your Manchester location. The booking system is broken though

What is the source for the VAT percentile chart?
Hi Jessa. The percentile charts for all the data points are Bodyscan data over the last nine years. While it is not a random sample of the UK population it is huge and broad.
Super helpful video! Well done, sir!
Thoughts on ways to lose visceral fat if we are still in a normal BMI ? Is it still best to do calorie deficit and once lost, then try to ensure continuing to maintain muscle?
"in a normal BMI" is a completely irrelevant metric in this case, if you want to loose fat... loose fat. Period
Would you be willing to review my results? I have some questions! Thanks!
Do you have facilities in USA? I live between Philadelphia and Baltimore
We are only in the UK, I'm afraid :(
Will the scan indicate where the visceral fat is located ie near which organs? Can it indicate fatty liver or pancreas?
No, the DEXA scan is not granular enough to measure or see fat around individual organs. DEXA measures a small sliver of internal fat in the android (belly) region and this measurement is consistent with detailed, granular fat measurements by CT scan. Utlimately, it doesn't really matter where you store visceral fat - the less the better. Knowing which organs you're storing fat around doesn't help you lose it.
You did not explain HOW to read it. This just sounds like an advertisement for your company.

What is the radiation dose for the operator?
The dose for the operator is even lower than it is for the customer because we are not in the path of the beam. However, the operator may perform many scans a day, so they either sit behind a shielding screen or at a distance where the radiation is zero. Bodyscan's radiological procedures are audited annually by an independent radiation protection advisor (RPA) to ensure the dose and risk to clients and operators are as low as reasonably practical (ALARP).
@@Bodyscan Thanks for reply. I'm just still answering, if the dose at distance is zero, why also shield screen taken into consideration?
@@misterc3835 I said "they either sit behind a shielding screen OR at a distance where the radiation is zero". If there is space in the room for the operator to sit away then no shield is needed. If the room is small and the operator is forced to sit nearer the machine then we use a shield.
