1957 MGA Coupe Restoration 40 Cabin Heat Proofing Done
Second part of cabin heat proofing is done. Specifically, I used a specialty sandwich of closed cell foam and open cell foam in shapes patterned to the car interior, and glued them on with 3M 90, a freakishly strong adhesive that I've used in the past. At the seams, I used gorilla tape, not to hold pieces together, but to ensure any gaps were closed, and thus, unable to transmit any sound. I'm looking for an almost church-like quiet in this little beast.

Using my keen powers of deductive reasoning, and because I'm cheap, I found the cheapest, thickest hushmat-ist stuff on Amazon and bought three boxes during their black friday deals. Really , I only needed 1 and a half. And it arrived in blue Amazon colors with Amazon stuff all over it. Gawd. Nevertheless, I cracked on and coated every inner surface of the car's cabin. This will cut down on the...

All you ever needed to know to make a simple but elegant trailer hitch for an MGA. Total time was 6 hrs, total cost is $167. The design and all rights are Barney Gaylord's, as seen in MGAguru.com. It's more or less the bible for all things MGA.
1957 MGA Coupe Restoration 35 Clear Coat Sand and Buff 2
มุมมอง 3412 หลายเดือนก่อน
OK, part 2 of sanding the clear coat is done. I've overcome some drips and sags and some imperfections in the clear, using successively finer sand paper. In all, I have a bunch of hours into it all, and today, I finished. What I have left is actual buffing and polishing the paint, and this will be the step that REALLY makes it shine. I look forward to finishing, to be honest, and to moving on t...

The second set of clear coating is well cured and I'm now spending time to sand out any imperfections (orange peel, nibs and sags/drips). I start in some cases with 800 grit sand paper, then to 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 5000. I've since purchased 5000, 7000 and 10,000 grit sand paper, more as a science experiment than anything else. And I can see a difference with such high grit sand paper! Ev...

1957 MGA Coupe Restoration 30 Color Sanding
มุมมอง 6603 หลายเดือนก่อน
Color Sanding is done. I'm going to do another layer of clear coat, and then cut that as well, but using up to 3000 grit sand paper, and buffing/polishing. In this clip of vids, I stopped at 600 grit, so as to provide something for more clear coat to grip onto.

The battery tray that came with the coupe was dinky, so I replaced it with something much more substantial, wider, and longer. The intent is to have a tray big enough for a modern battery (something a Miata would use) and some cargo space.

So after about a month off, for work and family, I'm back into it. Nice work ! Can you give me some info on the bolt, nut and washer kits you got?
I bought them from a gent in Wales, UK, but he seems to be out of business. MGAguru.com has a listing of all the bolts, nuts, et al, where one can take part nums to McMasters or the local hardware store to purchase.
thank you i was trying to find a product that had this solvent and was able to ship here in colorado, they have banned this chemical in a lot of places and products.

@@christos7440got some carbon off coming in tomorrow for my wheels. Thanks for sharing this information, i guess be safe with this stuff try not to huff it lol 😂
Looks just like the Jasco stuff I picked up from my local BBS. Put it on and leave it the hell alone for a minimum of 15 minutes.

I am about 7 years behind you. I am currently welding on new sill, box beams and such so I can get the body off the frame. I was planning on using my cherry picker to get the body off, but I was pleasantly surprised that you can get it off with only two guys!!
@@BrianRoy-x2e funny how light they are, huh? :)
Looking good! I found that using a rotary buffer with a wool pad I was good to go after 3000. It was close to 2000, so at least for me, anything over 3000 didn't help. Obviously that was dependent on starting with a wool pad and a rotary buffer. If you're using a random orbital and foam pad ymmv. The biggest thing for me was to have a super bright LED light bank right over what I was working on. I have great lighting in the shop but adding an LED work light right next to the panel made it was so much easier to see the scratches. I also changed directions with each grit so it was easier to see if each successive grit was removing scratches from the previous one. As you know... it takes a long time but it is sure worth it.
"it takes a long time" is an apt descriptor! I'm thinking I'll have about 60 hours into just the buff/polishing part alone!
Love the color! I look back on the days of color sanding with mixed emotions. It was a royal pita but the results were definitely worth it.
@@therestorationshop <grumble> I know, I know... hours spent now equals perfection later, and I have nothing but time
I like the cart you made for the body. I am going to make one so I can roll it in and out of the barn while working on it. You didn't happen to record the dimensions? Thanks.
You only brush 1 way and leave alone
Yes. This stuff is freakin' legendary. No need for multiple coats, no need t o leave it to work overnight. Brush on a liberal amount and within seconds, it starts to work.
A response to your question about mounting the gas tank. I looked through my factory workshop manual that came with my 1958 roadster, Scarborough Faire catalogs, Victoria British catalogs and Moss Motors catalogs. They don't show any more than you have to work with. Maybe the tank is low in the front to prevent fuel starvation when competing in hill climbs. 🤔☺☺ The Scarborough Faire and Victoria British catalogs both have a good parts explosion, just a bolt and spring washer to mount the front to the cross member.
@@warrenp2022 I thought as much, thanks for the research!
@@christos7440 Your welcome. I bought mine in 1967 after the 2nd owner demonstrated some spirited driving on a back road in NH. Limited abilities and funding have contributed to it's present state of possibly terminal dis-repair. Maybe someday I will work on it instead of watching everyone else.
@@warrenp2022 maybe look me up if you decide to sell :)
@@christos7440 I may. I have memories of it being fun, if slow on acceleration, to drive when I was 19 through 26 before I took it off the road for some repairs. I was better at disassembly it seems as it never was driven again. Now at 76 with an aging body the reality of crawling around trying to weld new panels and all the rest may be too much. I have a spare car minus the engine and transmission for odd parts and a blueprint of how it should go together, it is a 1600 but close enough. A point of contention, I spent five years in the Army! 😎
It's 95$ a gallon how much do you need to do an average car
@@adamscoggins4553 likely the whole account. I'm using fiberglass fenders so didn't strip the ones that came with the car, and what was left didn't need stripping or was mechanically stripped (smaller pieces).
I feel sorry for your eyes, lungs, and brain cells. PPE
Where can I get the chemical?
Amazon. It's a bit pricey though - about $98 per gallon. You've seen how effective it was though. For me, well worth the cost.
I have a suspicion that this stuff is the same formula as the original Aircraft Stripper. It acts and smells the same. Be sure to use appropriate protection for your eyes, skin and lungs.
same chemical. dichloromethane or methylene chloride
Is that an original blue MG color? Love it! What is the name of the color? Thanks
Hi there! No, not original. Mercedes, Audi and a few domestic brands have the same formula. Chevy calls it Elkhart Blue, common I think, to Impallas and such. It has a nice metallic to it

Pretty color! Good work!
thanks for sharing... looks good!
I've got another round of clear coat to put down, but I appreciate the kind words
Love the color! I painted my MG TD in the summer and it was tough. I did have a really big fan blowing through a filter bank so that helped keep it cooler.
It was roasting in the space where I keep my compressor, which led to it not working well. I would like to invest in a garage AC, if nothing more than to keep temps bearable in the summer, at least enough to put down more clear coat some time in the future.
Good job, that's going to be a great car.
Thanks! I'm having trepidation on the color - I'm looking for a burnt Orange for either a '19 Ford GT or a MacLaren P1, but cant find the paint code
So, burnt orange was a tri-coat, so I went with an Acura red instead
Can I get the contact information for Bob who made the inner fender louvers? I’m restoring a 1958 coupe in Ohio and have really found your videos helpful in my first restoration project! Thanks for the continued uploads!

Good video. S/N should be along the inner back edge. It may be under the headliner material. I have similar for sale near Toronto, Canada. You are one step ahead of me in posting a video of it.
I searched fruitlessly for that S/N multiple times. No idea where the heck it is/was.
Have been following along and I have a question ------ I got my eye on a '58 Coupe ----- and would like to do what you are doing to yours ---- I only have pictures of the car ---- and I was looking to see what parts I may need ---- and looking at the front and the rear window seals ---- they both a really cracked ----- so in trying to get an idea of parts cost ----- I see the window seals are not out there ------ So ------ here's the question did you already pick up a set? ------ Do you have a source for buying them? ------ Thank You for sharing your work on the Coupe ------ Let me know ----- Rodney
I don't know of a source for the seals ... it never occurred to me that they're hard to find. I usually go with Moss Motors first, and then branch out.
I decided to call Moss and spoke to them --- and they -- DO -- have them both --- front and rear ---- One has to get them in a Bundle Package and they are on back order --- Makes me feel a lot better --- for I have a chance at getting a Coupe also ---- I wouldn't want to get the glass out and not have a source for the seals
Great progress!
I'm thinking of purchasing a Coupe but I'm worried about the heat inside the cab. I love my '58 roadster. I love the look of the MGA Coupe.
They're probably as hot as any other car from the 50s. I'll be adding air conditioning to mine in time

@@therestorationshop Very nice!, especially in silver
1:00 I had creases in the same areas (right and left) in my MGA as well. I believe this is caused by idiot mechanics positioning hoists and car jacks under these corners thinking they can lift the car from there..

@@christos7440 All good, if you can't laugh at farts, you're choosing to have the same number of farts with less laughter.
Can you say who was the source for you repair panels?
Moss Motors sells these. I believe Kilmarten and Metal Mickey do as well
From.all that I have read moss panel is of poor quality
@@michaelsmith7544 I've heard it too, but the ones I got were fine. The "Moss sux" bandwagon seems to have a life of its own, but I've had more issues with their competitors than with Moss itself. If nothing else, at least I can get in touch with Moss' reps. Head to mgexp.com and look in the MGA section - lots of members there and a lot of vendors who advertise for parts for our cars. Moss isn't the only game in town and some of the specialty vendors make really good products
Any of you guys finished your cars? Parts prices have gone silly. I have a RH drive 1600 MK2 1962 one of the last ones made.
My roadster is done, minus any minor changes I might do later. I buy a lot of parts from other MGA owners, and new if it's chrome or such.
There is lead ,a lot of it in older car paints

Well, I paid $60k for it. ;)
Congrats, looks like fun! You've done this before so you know... but do make sure you remove all that paint. If it came off with the tape there was a step or three missed in the prep process when it was painted. Excited to follow along!
Yeah, agreed. I'm already resigned to do just that...
Nice progress! Something to consider, if you're putting glass into a gasket/seal, be sure you have clearances for all of it before you cut in the stoplight...
Not sure I'm going to cut in the stop light. I'm thinking I'll mount it externally...
