The Fusion of Anime and Realism, Shinkiro’s Game Art Style (Breakdown & Analysis)
Shinkiro (森気楼) is one of the legendary artists in the fighting game industry. He has contributed extensively to SNK and Capcom games, creating character designs, cover illustrations, and promotional art for series like King of Fighters and Street Fighter. Like any great artist, Shinkiro's style has its own unique characteristics. His full name is Toshiaki Mori.

About:
Toshiaki "Shinkiro" Mori was born on December 14, 1962. He began his career at SNK in the early 1990s, working as an illustrator and conceptual artist. During his time there, Shinkiro designed characters and created cover art for a wide range of NeoGeo games, including Art of Fighting, The King of Fighters 94-2000, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, Metal Slug, and Last Blade.
In 2000, after SNK went bankrupt, Shinkiro was laid off but quickly found a new position at Capcom. He soon began producing cover art for various Capcom titles, such as the Capcom VS SNK series, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Resident Evil: Dead Aim, Dino Stalker, Final Fight One, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Dead Rising, and Devil May Cry 5. He has also contributed cover art for American comics, including Spider-Man Unlimited and UDON's Street Fighter comic series.
Shinkiro’s art style is instantly recognizable due to his "realistic" airbrush technique, which he often uses for character illustrations. He has applied this photo-realistic approach to individual character artworks as well as group posters and collages, while also experimenting with different coloring techniques like cel-shading. Shinkiro’s signature style, particularly in the faces he draws, features a consistent shape and format for both male and female characters. However, he has demonstrated versatility by illustrating interesting effects, and backgrounds with remarkable skill.

    I think Shinkiro took a lot of inspirations on movie posters from the 70s and 80s, when they have to be hand made by an artist. If you see movie posters from that times you can see a similar art style like Shinkiro, thick line art and color and shadding for details, really cool.

    • @GameArts1
      @GameArts1 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually I think you just mentioned the core of the problem here. Honesty I think Kubo gets a lot of backlash on his art (like bleached background) because people are more disappointed in the bleached... empty story. They just want to out their frustration on him, because objectively he is a great artist and people downplaying his skill are likely not even close to his level. That said, I dropped out of the story myself in all fairness and only checked the cool fight scenes to finish it off.

    • @kairoGC
      @kairoGC 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@GameArts1 People who say this guy isn't good at drawing don't know anything about drawing. I'm concept artist for more than decades now and I can assure you that Kubo is a brilliant character designer, his ability to emphasise the style of the characters is special, probably the mangaka who has drawn characters in the highest number of different outfits in the history of manga. For me he should be draw for scriptwriters, like Yusuke Murata for exemple (Murata stays better in drawing in my view ). Whatever, The only manga collection I've resold without any regret is Bleach, after 37 books I was tired, style is nice but not enough to keep me in the story. I dropped out too.

    Anime is rather the best medium to inspire video game art to better separate fantasy from reality as, like anime, video games are meant to be set in fiction. The tall and round eyes are the best trait because no real life person can have those.

  • @LuigiTheMetal64
    @LuigiTheMetal64 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The art style deserves to be copied for future Pokémon games. Generations 1-4 look the best. Not only that, the designs made people recognize the series as Pokémon. SV suck when the characters no longer appear sex dimorphic, nor do they have the iconic yet basic arching head with the tall and round eyes together character design. The past designs even work in saving memory to allow the National Pokédex, Exp. Share setting, overworld Ability effects, and other fun gameplay features.

    I'd like to say my favorite era of his art journey was the late 2000s to early 2010s--around the time where he made his Overture, Blazblue, and Xrd work. I think his coloring style had such a nice value range and I liked the more cartoony and angular proportions more.

    I like his art because not only is he like the face of SNK art akin to Daigo or Bengus to Capcom, but also the fact that his art of these fighting game characters (whom Im part of the FGC), if I had to describe them, would be "If 'in real' was done right" with fictional characters; for example, I love zangief, one of my mains, and I like how Shinkiro draws him with large but pretty good almost realistic physique proportions as opposed to the still great more cartoony-anime in-game depictions of zangief with exaggerated muscles (Alpha sprite). But I love his art.
