Students' mistakes: how and when to correct them?
It's no secret: when students speak, they make mistakes.
The question is: how should we correct them? And when is it more effective to correct them: while they're speaking (so we're interrupting them) or after they've finished speaking (so they may not remember their mistakes)?
Find the answers in the video, where you will learn:
🕗 when to correct: delayed vs. immediate correction
⚙️ how to correct: recasts vs. explicit correction

    • @languaged

    What research support is there for this?

    • @languaged

      Hello, yours is an interesting question. The research evidence behind what lesson framework works best for language acquisition is not necessarily conclusive. PPP aligns with a strong interface paradigm and skill learning theory, positing that by practising a skill, you will become better able to use it. However, lots of research has also shown this doesn't work best when it comes to SLA, which happens according to developmental sequences that are impervious to explicit instruction. On the other hand, some arguments have been made based on research from the past two decades showing the positive effects of explicit instruction on some measures of spontaneous L2 production. I'm personally still on the fence about this and am more convinced that weak interface-inspired methods like TBLT are more likely to work, but you can learn more about some of the evidence supporting PPP in Jason Anderson's work: www.jasonanderson.org.uk/downloads/why_ppp_wont_and_shouldnt_go_away.pdf and wrap.warwick.ac.uk/169557/7/WRAP-why-practice-makes-perfect-sense-the-past-present-future-potential-PPP-paradigm-language-teacher-education-Anderson-2016.pdf. I hope this helps!

    I needed a little refresher, the rest il figure it out as always but as a language teacher and someone who learned three languages myself i have to say the grammar approach is the worst of them all. I believe that a language can only be polished to a conversational level in school only if the student has some foundations in that language beforehand and our goal as teachers should be to encourage them to learn and give them some tips how on they spare time to truly master it. I remember myself learning it that way mostly by watching movies with subs, rewinding, then watching without subs. Simply by listening to a language a lot you get a good vocabulary. Now a teacher has something to work with and make a conversation instead of repeat after me which will boil down to remember for the test, forget afterwards.
