The most intuitive control I can think of for this is the wii controller. It might be another can of worms trying to decode that thing, but it allows for 3D motion in space and if you can figure out how to translate the robots motion by inverse kinematics, two wii controllers could imitate two robot arms. A and B button to close (hold) and close (trigger), orientation of the wii controller determines it's angle, translation of the controller determines translation. All wii controller accelerations are non linear, to allow for faster movements to cover greater distances virtually then they do physically (similar to mouse acceleration on a computer) and thus, the wii controller is the perfect choice.

For input you could probably use a switch joycon lol, 3-axis gyro, a trigger and few buttons. You could also use both in conjunction for even more options.

Really nice find. I now want to build one, but looks like they are not so commonly sold in Europe, and also not that cheap... I'm thinking about using small gimbal motors so we can have force feedback...

As a Intuitive Engineer this is incredible, you’re really nearby of da Vinci fundamentals! Take a look of remote center of motion, that’s the most important and hard part of robotic assisted surgery

Hi Bennett. Excellent work. I started down this same path last summer, prototyping a possible exhibit for a California science museum. In the end the exhibit got dropped ... but I'm still very much interested. I've got 3 of the "blue" units here (pincer-type, can't recall exact one) and a similar box of iterative 3D printed mounts. I like your spring-loaded coupling mechanism. Mine simply rides down the grooves and snaps into place, depending on rotating the discs until they seat properly. I'll check out your git repo.

I wonder if a 3D SpaceNavigator would work as a first try as an input device. Its at least good for positioning, but the additional finger position sensing, that's quite a challenge.

Hey Bennett! I’m actually used to be a Manufacturing Engineer for the Core Instruments division of Intuitive! You’ve got the older Si instruments there. Very impressed with your work! There’s a lot that goes into making that “talking” between the robot and instrument happen but you covered the basics great! A little background on the “life count” they actually have to qualify every instrument for a specific number of lives by running new versions through simulated use and do some math to calculate what the max life count would be. All has to be submitted through the FDA and approved for every country we send instruments to! Great Video!!

Make a gauntlet made with 1 micro proximity sensor in each finger. That is for flex, extension and rotation. For movement you should hold your elbow in a platform with X and Y. With this system, you can do all with one hand.

A bit silly for a control solution but have you checked out VR gloves as a solution? You could try to map the movement of specific fingers and such much like the complicated machine the doctor uses in the video. Though, you'd have to account for the limits of each machine, and I wouldn't really call it a precise solution either. But, it would definitely feel intuitive (if done right)
