Horizontal Drill - Fantastic way to feel all of the proper motion at the bottom of the swing.
This is one of the best drills to feel what your body and arms should be doing at the bottom of the swing. Another NO BALL drill.

I can’t speak for anybody else, but for me...this works. Thanks for posting this drill.
Great way to get that turn feel, love it..Steve
Thanks Steve! Appreciate the comment.
Thanks for posting this really makes sense and I've heard it before start with a smaller Club doing good drills to get your swing dialed in
Agreed. I have most of my students swinging a PW or 9 iron for drills until they get a good feel for them. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
I’m really impressed by the content on your channel! Each video feels like learning or experiencing something new. It seems like there’s a huge potential to reach an even larger audience. When is your next video coming out? I definitely don’t want to miss it! 😊.................
I put out at least one a week. Subscribe and hit notify.
Great drill, but i have one question. When doing the drill, do i actually have to hit the ground?
Yes... You don't need to hit the ground hard. but you want to get used to the feel of the club descending on the irons. Driver is the only club that we don't contact the ground. Thanks for the question and for watching.
Great drill. I would suggest you do another video on how to go from this drill to really hitting a ball on the course.
Great idea! Thanks for the suggestion.
It's not stupid. It's epic!
Thanks. My student named it! Thanks for watching.
Awesome drill!!! Never seen anything like it. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome. I use many drills for my students, but this one usually has the biggest and quickest results since it involves the entire (abbreviated) swing. Thanks for watching.
Good shit !!! You are spot on 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks Tripp. Appreciate the comment.
Juju swing is exactly the swing
Had to look that up... but very similar. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Love your explanations
Thanks. Appreciate the feedback.
😛👊🤩👌🏅 simple as that....
Thanks for watching.
So then, how do you swing when you’re actually hitting a ball if you’re not gonna swing the club like that in reality?
Good question. Drills are always meant to be exaggerated. Once you can do this drill and feels ridiculously easy... move on to hitting some balls with just slightly less of a handle drag on the takeaway. Eventually, it should become a bit like swinging a bat or throwing a ball... we've done it so many times it just feels simple. For most of my students we move from this right into half swing punch shots. I've got a video named "best ball striking drill" You can watch that.. Thanks for the question and for watching.
@ Thank you for the explanation.
Make sure you push off? Do you only do the drill with one hand? I find it much harder to do drills and drill with both hands on the club.
Not sure what you mean by "push off". The proper swing has weight transfer just before the downswing begins and then hip rotation. Many of my students struggle to do this drill with both hands at first. Spend some time with just your trail arm (right arm for right handed) and get the loose sloppy feel with that first. Look at the 10 secs mark of this video and try to emulate that. Once that feels simple... move to both arms. Thanks for watching.
I hit behind the ball constantly or to a lesser extent top it. Does this help with this.
Hitting behind the ball and topping the ball are both symptoms of bad sequence. If you video your swing, face on, I would bet that you would see the club extending early on the downswing. That's almost always due to a lack of lower body movement early in the downswing. This drill is exaggerated to help us feel the lower body get engaged early on the downswing and the arms and specifically the wrists release much later. I'll put up a short video to illustrate the downswing positions that all elite players have. Thanks for watching.
@ Thanks
Okay here’s a breakdown of the drill: just swing the club right several times a day until you can swing the club right. Got it?
Slightly edited. Just swing the club the right way (without the ball more than) several times a day until you can swing the club the right way (with a ball, on the course, when it counts.) Got it!
I can attest to the fact that this “stupid little drill” works wonders! I have spent everyday practicing this drill since you posted it two weeks ago. I spend about 45 minutes a day doing the drill. On some nice days here in central PA I have been able to hit some balls. My ball flight and contact has improved 100%! I am so much more relaxed and try to make every swing feel like a practice swing. I have been doing the drill with 5 iron through SW. I have not attempted my driver or woods yet. Everyone should give this drill an honest try. I wish this was shown to me years ago! Thanks, again, for teaching this!
Thanks for the support. I'd be happy to do a free swing eval for you. Hit me up if you're interested.
@@SouthernUtahGolfAcademy yes, I would absolutely be interested! How do we proceed?
Send two videos of you hitting a 7 iron. One face on and one down the line. Send them to my email address on my website. Same name as the channel.
@@SouthernUtahGolfAcademy Thank you so much! I will film them in the next day or so and get them sent to you.
@@keplertssounds good
This has got to be why 90% of the time, when the club gets a bit stuck in the grass in my back swing I hit some of the best shots ever. It's the other 10% that make me sad.
Thanks for watching.
Good visual. I'll give this drill a try. Thanks
You're welcome! Hope it helps.
Wow... That's unbelievable.
Give it a try. Thanks for watching
I think this drill works because... This drill will help you shift your weight to your left foot on the final hinge in the backswing, which is hard to do. This drill will help you get the feeling. Notice when you throw a ball you shift your weight just when your throwing arm stops not when your arm starts to go forward. I think we need to do this in the golf swing.
You're 100% correct. And throwing a ball is a great example. I use that feeling a lot when I teach. Thanks for the comment.
I struggled for a couple years to find my swing. The more I focused the worse I got. Stumbled on your video and practiced the drill for about five days without golfing. The results were like night and day. I found my swing again! From driver to wedge, all were much better. The only thing that is interesting is I hit the ball best when I feel as if I am being very loose on the backswing and the top of the handle is leading the way. Just like the drill. When I can do that, and make a smooth transition, the result is pure. Thank you!
It's amazing how few golfers will have the discipline to do this drill WITHOUT the ball. Good for you. Thanks for the feedback.

OK? Thanks for watching.
... cudda been a great 1 minute vid
There is a short! Thanks for watching
Thanks for that demostration. I haven't been doing a proper practice swing like that before shots because i wasn't sure if taking a divot on a practice swing was ok (im a new golfer dont know all the rules). But im going to do it now maybe, or what do you think about just lifting club up slightly so you miss the ground instead
I hit the ground pretty hard on this demo but the fairway was really firm. That being said... you can make a nice practice swing and still swing just above the ground. The rehearsal is to feel good tempo and make sure you hold the balanced finish. Don't need a divot fot that. Good question. Thanks for watching.
wow what a cool drill! Can I assume you can also do this with driver and woods?
It's a drill designed to help us "feel" the proper movement of the golf swing. That being said, yes, the sequence is the same but there are differences in ball position and body position between short irons, long irons fairway woods and the driver. Watch my video titled, "Driver vs Irons"

You're welcome! Hope it helps! Thanks for watching.
Could I have you do a swing analysis of a junior golfer? Thank you in advance.
Sure... I need a swing with a 7 iron face on and one down the line hitting a ball. Send it to me at kevin@southernutahgolfacademy.com
I want an easier swing and will try this. I feel like I'm putting in far too much energy into my golf swing. Thank you for posting this!
Thanks for watching. You'll hit it much farther and straighter if you hit it with the bigger muscles.
This is the BEST drill I have every done! I found this a week ago and have been doing it everyday for about an hour. Yesterday I hit 40 balls with my PW and have never hit the ball better! Solid contact, small draw, and right on target. Practicing without a ball is key because I didn't worry about the outcome. This drill has taught me to be soft, and relaxed in my swing. You were right when you said this will fix everything. Do I do the same with my driver and woods or do I need to do anything different? Thanks so much for this!
Thanks for the feedback and good question. Sequence is the same for every club in the bag. (except putting and certain chips shots) however, ball position, and weight distribution changes as the clubs get longer. Watch my "Drivers vs Irons" video. That will help you. Hard for me to convince many students to practice without a ball. The original feedback for most people needs to be about the proper sequence (movement) of a swing. I need a camera for that... not a golf ball.
@@SouthernUtahGolfAcademy I agree, learning the proper sequence of the swing is something I never did. I was more focused on just "hitting" that ball! The ball was getting in the way of me improving my swing and contact. This "Stupid Little Drill" has been amazing. I can feel an A+ swing sequence vs a D- swing sequence now. Thanks so much for offering this great drill. It is a back to basics kind of thing that most golfers should be incorporating in their training. I will check out your "Drivers and Irons" video. Thanks, Kevin, and have great day!
I love it when my in-person students train like you. Thanks for the feedback.
I conclude, Adam Scott has an good/efficient swing.
I agree. Not much can go wrong with his move. Thanks for watching
Not sure how I got here, but this is great advice.
Thanks for watching. Hope it helps!
Doggie always has to make a showing doesn’t he? Like your vids.
Ha... His name is Maverick and he's the self appointed channel mascot. Thanks for watching.
How does this help your club face be square at impact. If you are not hitting a ball you surely can't tell. And a square clubface is the single most important thing. You can havr the most beautiful swing in the world but it's not going straight if the clubface is not square
See 4:35 of the video. Watch my "2 simple things" video and combine that info with this and you can build a swing that has everything that every elite player has. Consistency requires 2 things, a square face and good angle of attack. Face angle combined with club path give us direction. Impact angle gives us consistent contact. The absolute only way to accomplish both of those consistently, is to learn proper sequence and also learn how to square the face either on the backswing or early on the downswing. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for not saying “ over exaggerate”. It’s difficult to take illiterate instructors seriously. BTW, great drill. Thanks
Maybe my favorite comment to date. Thanks for watching.
You've convinced me. I'm gonna take your advice and put the drill to work. I'll admit, it makes more sense than anything I've come across lately!
It'll help. Remember... it's a drill to help us relax so we can feel the proper sequence of the swing. Particularly the arms and wrists. Hit me up if you have questions. Thanks for watching.
This is rather like something I discovered recently after following the instruction for years of: 'stop flipping!' That instruction causes you to be too rigid with your wrists at impact, causing erratic shots. When you make a point of deliberately keeping your wrists soft at impact it makes for relaxed hitting and more repetitive, accurate shots.
I agree. I have a lot of drills for students to delay the release. But, the risk is that they then start to hold off the release artificially, which is really bad. When swinging a bat, we have a significant wrist release. It's just late because it happens after most of the body rotation. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Looks like Bobby Jones takeaway from the old videos
2nd comment about that. I never actually thought about it but you're right.
Thanks…
You're welcome!
This is literally Bobby Jones swing.
2nd comment about that. I never actually thought about it but you're right.
Perfect. Great drill. Some call it the god move. Definitely can’t hit the ball well without it.
Thanks. I'm all about helping students find the proper sequence of a golf swing. And you're right... without that consistency will not happen.
Yes, this is exactly the correct way to learn to hit the ball. The whole swing key is what happens from waist high (back) to waist high (thru). Bravo! No ball, whiffle ball and finally real ball.
100%
As I recall we have to do a knew movement 1000 times before it becomes natural.
Takes a lot of time. And once it feels good on the range it still takes a while before I can get it to the course. Thanks for the comment.
Not big on commenting, but used this drill yesterday on the course, and I played well, it did sort out my over the top swing.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for commenting.
I understand your point about exaggerating the drill. But could you show how this drill translates into the actual swing? How much relaxation is still there? How floppy? What is the actual benefit of this drill? What’s in it that actually improves the actual shot? Sorry, too many questions. But in reality there’s just one 😊
I'm all about sequence and this drll is designed to help you feel what parts of the body should be moving and when. Swing a bat and you'll feel something similar. With very few exceptions... all golf swings should have the same sequence. Length of the swing and speed of the rotation changes but not the sequence.
@ Thank you. I’m new to golf (under 2 years) but baseball is even more of a mystery to me, so it doesn’t help. Sorry. Personally I’ve been drawing parallels with tennis but it doesn’t work because in golf there is no stepping forward
True... but for shorter irons there is a move into the lead foot like tennis and you also lead with your body on a tennis swing. Lower body, then chest and shoulders and then arms. At least on a forehand. And that is the sequence I'm talking about with the golf swing. Thanks for watching.
How do you adjust for having shallow sand vs "normal" sand? My problem with shallow sand is the club bounces off the dirt beneath the sand, then into the ball, and the ball goes flying out with way too much speed and distance.
Good question. We have several courses here in Southern Utah that have hard packed sand. If your courses have shallow sand, I would advise you to have a sand wedge with less bounce... maybe 6 to 8 degrees and then I don't open the face as much and I don't aim as far left. You need to get a little more leading edge involved. It's definitely a little harder than soft sand.
I like take it back golf and follow through with baseball...
Thanks for watching.
Why didn't you hit a ball and show us what that looked like if it is such a great deal. Let's see if it actually helped your swing. Hit about 5 balls and let's see the actual result.
I thought he made it pretty clear that this is an exaggerated drill to develop a feel and not the swing you take out on the course. Rewatch from 4:00 to 4:30. What I would like to have seen is the before and after swing of the guy he was helping. I did this drill for 2 minutes and can feel the benefits. Too much tension in my swing and hitting at the ball are two of my big faults. This video and the response above about transitioning to hitting the ball makes great sense. He's not on the range but I assume he is a good golfer who already incorporates these fundamentals in his swing so all you would be watching would be a good golfer hit 5 good shots.
Thanks for the response and it's spot on. I'll hit a couple of shots using the drill and put up a short. This DRILL is designed to get golfers to lose the tension in their swings. Not all golfers need this drill but many do. I rarely use this for a junior golfer or for most of my female students. They don't seem to have as much tension. Men tend to try and control the club with thier arms too often.
I can hit a few but it'll look the same and the ball will go about 60 yards. It's meant to create a feel of less tension and you may have missed the part where we discussed taking the ball away to do this drill.
@@glennsmith8390 hmm, the lesson was to relax the tension and shallow the follow through-this is a universal truth in golf..no need to prove it
Thanks for the support.
Great tip-I’m older and my muscles are trained differently than a pro golfer- I need to Lose tension big time - this reminds me of Jack and how he started his swing…
Thanks for watching.
