    Wonderful performance! This is a neglected masterpiece. I performed it myself a few years ago. Ms.. Kahng, you inspired me to go back to it. I really enjoyed your performance; you play with deep understanding and equally deep feelings. Thank you for sharing.

      It probably has something to do with a global pandemic that was going on when this was filmed. You probably never heard of it where you live, but it killed over one million people in the United States. Have a safe and interesting week 🍁

      Haha, yes. I was honestly surprised that the publisher let me get away with only auxiliary woodwinds (though I did end up preparing alternate parts to cover alto flute on flute and Eb clarinet on Bb clarinet). It wasn't my plan when I began the orchestration, but by the time I was done it seemed like such a good fit it's hard to imagine it with the more typical section I originally planned.

    Brothers and Sisters, God loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus Christ for us to save us from our sins, and he bled and died on a cross for us to redeem us from death, to gain life everlasting, for those who put their trust in him. And what's more, he has risen, and is willing to call you to repentance (correction) and as his witness, by his grace indeed. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith". Jesus loves you, God cares for you!

    I watched this wonderful video with such deep longing to be playing the music. I recognized many of the people in the orchestra with whom I performed in this and various other Arkansas ensembles for 38 years, including the kind and noble gentleman on the podium. I miss it so much! Much love to all !

    Wow! Kudos for the Arkansas Phil playing a young living composer ! Great to hear her work but I was surprised by the intonation problems and raggedy ensemble . Are they sight-reading . Rehearsal time though expensive is precious !

    • @darrinsiberia
      @darrinsiberia ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the conundrum of the classical music world in a nutshell. Highly skilled players are a commodity. But their time is limited and they spend most of it honing the Canon. So many great living composers remain unknown. It takes more than a few reads and a performance to truly move an audience and get them to "buy into" a new work.

    • @MrInterestingthings
      @MrInterestingthings ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darrinsiberia I wanted to hear this music . It is stylish and full of events but not really memorable like much by Ligeti,Norgard or Boulez . My mom's husband isfrom Arkansas and we stayed at the Lodge overlooking BlueMountainRiver9can't even remember name of huge wooden doors,wooden floors.Big giant high ceiling rooms.Hope I get to hear your orchestra one day! I think the problem is the greynessand suddenness and seemingly disparate things. of much of the 20th and21st century which of course must be heard in relevant music . I'm amazed by music that has a real profile . So much music is not memorable and even my favorite pieces like Boulez'2ndSonata,Higdon's violin concerto ,Bolcolm's piano etudes ,Roger Sessions symphonies progress in a way my brain can't say thishappens and becomes this and then this ! But I know what I luv and run back to . Hope you guys do Andrew Norman's lay sometime . It is one of the American works I can't live without and never grow tired of finding new things in its "happening all the time material". It must need a lotta rehearsals. Anyway thanks for responding to my admiration of your orchestra and its programming !!

    ~ Δεν βλέπω μεγάλη προθυμία στην παρακολούθηση της παρούσας δημοσίευσης (είναι εδώ και 2 χρόνια δημοσιευμένο). Όμως προσωπικά, το βρίσκω πολύ ενδιαφέρον και από πλευράς εκτέλεσης (ορχήστρα, μαέστρος), αλλά και από το υπέροχο μπαλέτο..!! ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ... ~ I don't see much interest in following up on this post (it's been posted for 2 years). But personally, I find it very interesting both in terms of performance (orchestra, conductor), but also from the wonderful ballet..!! THANKS...

    I really enjoyed this video. I performed with the Arkansas Philharmonic for several years until a health issue forced my retirement in 2019. Steven Byess is one of the two most genteel and pleasant conductors I ever worked with in 38 years of performance. In addition, he is a deeply knowledgeable and thorough professional in his art. I followed up with a TH-cam search on this lovely lady, and I found her "American Solstice for Chamber Ensemble". It is quite melodious and lovely. I'm thoroughly impressed, and now curious to hear more.

    Never heard of Barbara York before. This composition represents a continuation of the upward trend in quality of composition since the nadir that occurred in the mid-late 20th Century. Too bad she is no longer with us. Nice orchestration and performance. I like the bit of Peter and the Wolf vibe, which is particularly prominent in the first movement.

    Thank you Dr. Kahng! Your performance with Nathan Carterette was superb! Thank you also for your advocacy and support of Irene Britton Smith, Florence Price, William Grant Still and other Black composers whose works deserve to be much better known. Are you aware of a recording of Irene Britton Smith's Sinfonia? I cannot find one and would love to hear it. I also want to mention that the quality of this recording was just excellent. Most of the other recordings of this work on TH-cam suffer from recording technique that significantly detracts from the skill and passion of the musicians. Thank you all the hard work you put in to deliver both a great performance and a high quality recording. The result is greatly appreciated!
