Prototype Swirl pot. EVO X cooling upgrade!
On this episode we focus on the cooling system, primarily the swirl pot. The job of this component is to swirl coolant removing any air before it gets sent to the radiator. This is extremely important as radiators work best when 0% air is present allowing for better cooling capabilities.
Gaining every small percentage in efficiency is key when rallying. Let’s hope my design works!

Knowing how I drive any added protection up front is a win. I tend to take deep cuts and stay on line if there’s a bolder in the way. I’ve been able to move the radiator and AC condenser up 3” while also tiling it back 15 degrees which adds quite a bit of surface area to the cooling stack. Along with that I also loved the I/C higher in front for the same reasons. Fingers crossed we don’t need t...

Sign me up, this is sweet.
Once I’m able to test and verify it works I’ll begin production of them.
Exhaust gas isn't fresh air
Correct. That is why the after intercooler charge pipe diverts into the the turbosmart ALV40 that’s plumbed into the exhaust manifold. This isn’t a twin wastegate manifold as I was able to achieve great wastegate priority that only requires one. So the second actuator is for allowing the compressed fresh air into the exhaust system where it’ll ignite with unburned fuel and a hot manifold, therefore creating fresh air antilag.
This is the way I've seen it done
wondering why you needed such a huge piece of stock if you only needed about 1/4 of the diameter. Just seems like a waste to me but maybe there is a reason or it?
The cooling blocks were made over the weekend when no steel stores werent open, and needed the arms done by Monday. But definitely agree, could of started with smaller stock and reduced machine time
@@afterhoursgarage920 Makes sense to me. Glad you're not one of those tools that does it because they think it makes them look cool. Thanks for the reply.
That’s hella clean
Appreciate it!
Awsome build thanks for share
Thanks! Working on the next few videos!
subbed can't wait to see more!
Appreciate it!
this is top quality work and excellent editing. I see this channel hitting 100k subs in no time 😁
Thanks! There definitely times I feel I’m just wasting time and effort. So words of encouragement help tremendously!
Curious what the joins look like inside?,(only takes a tiny bit metal melt off to distroy turbo?)
Manifold was back purged so welded inside and out. Took extreme care to make sure everything was clean and no debris after welding
surprised 1-3 2-4 join, normally 1-4 2-3?
Honestly I think it’ll give the car a unique sound. Also with this design it really helped with packaging as I needed space above it. If it doesn’t work or causes issues… I’ll build a new one 🤷🏼♂️
@@afterhoursgarage920 keep a eye on "tuning and detonation", should be okay and can't wait to see, when you think we'll hear it , please?, Thanks
@@markcozzie I’m having Tim whittenridge from Motorsport electronics tune the car. I’ve worked with him on a few builds including a true rocket antilag system. He’s an absolute wizard when it comes to tuning. Currently having the wiring harness built, and saving for all of the motec electronics.
Im super keen to see how this turned out! I need this one my own evo X and the ralliart colt :)
As am I! Can’t wait to get my wiring and electronics package in. So I can finally get the car running. As far as reproducing them, there’s some changes I’d like to make, but definitely a possibility
did the v-band stay straight? tip for future have the exhaust housing clampad as a heat spreader so vbands stay straight.
Always good to be cautious and have started recently machining aluminum caps for every vband I come in contact with. Fortunately this particular flange was exceptionally thick so it did not warp.
Bro that is mint…..shit…… make me want to back to welding I miss fabing up pipes and it’s ss too
Thanks man! Really appreciate it.
Hell yeaa real recognize real how did you get started im thinking about starting my own small shop
Me a land a few friends all wanted a place to work on our cars. Then I slowly started taking in side work until I was regularly making enough to pay all my bills. Then I jumped ship from my 9-5 and started my own company. The freedoms are nice, just be prepared for endless nights and non existent weekends for the first 5 years.
@@afterhoursgarage920 Hell yea bro friendship and a dream keep up the good work
🔥 🔥 definitely like this, gonna look for updates!
Thanks! Trying my hardest to keep posting update videos.
Question bro, where do you get the ball joints from? Trying to make some uppers for a 97 thunderbird
The ball joint cups are from speedway motors.
Amazing idea! Show for us the difference with and without these systems, if possible. (Maybe lock the valve)
When it gets to tuning, it’ll be tuned with and without ALS then a tune that incorporates both together for true stage rally.
Dude these videos are sick keep ‘em coming
Thanks 🙏.
Definitely all for keeping the AC!
We’ll be nice a cold on transits
"not half assing it" would be making sure to get the correct length lines🤷🏽♂️.. But pretty cool bracket though
Running the line as it is, is a service loop. Due to the nature of that line if I need to remove the turbo from the car I’d like to keep that line attached and be able to move the turbo. It also allows to turbo and manifold to move without stressing the line. And lastly it acts P trap, almost like a toilet, it won’t allow oil to drain from the line into the turbo thus having oil just sit in the turbo and have the potential to push through the bearings causing it to smoke. Since it’s a pressurized system with a restrictor at the turbo oil inlet having the xtra length won’t hurt.
@@afterhoursgarage920 That's a legit reason for the excess. I WOULD remove my comment, but will leave it up so 1) other people who were thinking the same as me will see your response, and 2) I'm not a little b**** who deletes their own post when/if they've been owned.. lol
@@AirWreckD haha you’re all good. And who knows I may be completely wrong, I’m definitely not a fluid engineer but in my head it sounds right so I’m trying it 🤷🏼♂️. I think now a days people are too afraid to try there own ideas. Ya build is a full 180 from that.

Can you build custom Evo X engine harness for me?
I do not do wiring. I was only measuring out the legs to have a shop build it. My highest recommendation towards Nate klarmann at wiredaddy.online he has built some of the highest end electronics systems for prototype race cars. Tell him, myself (Kyle mclennan) sent you and he can take care of you!
Had me excited about tacos...lol
Damn that’s clean
Thanks 🙏
These other 2 clowns who replied are clearly clueless. You did a great job and the pics of their good/bad are fine. IF people saw what Porsche, Corvette, Audi, VW, Acura, etc, etc all did with their mig welded FIA cages that they sell in their full on GT cars....they would be blown away. Again, good job man.
Thanks.
What a great video, look how the part is moving when your welding 07:10
Wow I made the video and didn’t even notice it! Another reason what having all the runners welded together before welding the overall manifold.
What does it do for the turbo??
Per the class the car will be competing in, a 33mm restrictor is required. It limits the amount of air physically able to enter the turbo at any given time. Think taking a deep breath through a straw. With limited air, you can only make so much HP.
that was annoying
Thanks for the input
Where are you located?
Up until a few weeks ago I was located in Dallas TX. I have since relocated to Tucson AZ. Soon looking to start producing custom parts as a side business
I thought the fresh air valve is fed by the compressor side not the turbine side. You’re essentially using it as a wastegate here?
Is it fed via the compressor side. The fresh air will be entering right before the turbine side instead of directly after the ports. I’ve found that having the air enter right after the head drastically raises the temp of the head. The method I’m using may take a second longer to get ignited as it’s further down stream, but maximizing reliability and temps are my concern not peak performance
@@afterhoursgarage920 oh, you’re absolutely right! I mixed up the inlet and the outlet of the valve! I like your approach!
You can replace the whole HVAC system for a T7 designed unit. You only require defrost. Saves 19 lbs. I have one in my evo TA build.
While yes this is true. Rally sees so many different environments and conditions that keeping the factory unit will provide the best result. Nothing worse than doing 100 past a tree with a fogged windshield. Also keeping air conditioning is a must for me. When transiting from stage to stage when it’s 110 outside factory ac does wonders.
Hope you get far man
Car is making great progress!
🎉 'promo sm'
No thank uou
I was just thinking about how to do a fresh air rocket anti lag on a evo x lol.
So this unfortunate is not a “rocket” style anti lag as there’s no combuster mixing air and fuel in a true rocket sense. While this setup will do basically the same, the precision isn’t the same
Great job, im curious is there any allowance for main hoop angle from perpendicular? Can it match the B pillar or does it need to be perfectly 90 to the floor?
Thank you! I would have to double check the rules, off the top of my head I believe the FIA allows 0-10 degrees of lean back on the main hoop.
sick manifold man
Thank you! I’m hoping it works well.
I've worked and driven B-bodies for decades. What I'm missing is the orientation of the control arm bushings. Stock they are horizontal. Why are yours vertical ?
For this particular car it only has 3” of total suspension travel so running horizontally was not required. We’ve also found in harsh environments that spherical bearings fail faster under the loads applied when horizontal.
@@afterhoursgarage920 Would like to see it installed in the future.
Not impressed.

It needs some touch up but it’s ok.

chill dude, you do you.
I have installed maybe~5 subaru sets, and wasnt really amazed quality vise. But usually best "learning curve" is when you feel stupid, been there 😅👍Nice vid, and subscribed to see more
I’ve hand built a 100+ cages in a variety of cars, so I figured “how hard could it really be”… if it weren’t for needing the FIA spec, I would have thrown this out.
For future projects maybe, when FIA spec is needed, i suggest swedish KBT rollcages
I learned about them shortly after I learned about the CC struggles 🤦🏼♂️
CC are cowboys
🥺🥺
This build is so rad. Did you have to modify the front chassis rails to give clearance to the front half shafts for the front wheels?
No modifications to the rails. Because I was using the Bmw front diff is sat low allowing for a plenty of clearance
I was a spectator at that rally
Rally’s are always looking for volunteers!being a course marshal allows you to get much closer to the cars, and in spots where spectators aren’t allowed. The sport loves spectators, but only happens with the help of volunteers
Yeah I’m only 14 though, I have wanted to volunteer for a while.
Ah yes may have to wait a few more years or volunteer with a parent
Sorry to see you abandoned the 36, I was looking forward to the progress.
