Sports empowers -irrespective of gender - its sets one free, physically, mentally and emotionally. A Sticky Wicket is about a semi-urban slum on the outskirts of Delhi and a group of girls who live there - mostly daughters of domestic workers and daily wage laborers.
These girls come from the lower economic strata of our society and are bound by long standing traditions, society, gender and the crime infested area, which they live in. Toilets are a luxury here and evening meals banned. In the midst of their daily routines of cooking, cleaning, and looking after younger siblings and the house, enters a sport- Cricket. And gives them hope and wings to fly.
The game of cricket becomes a catalyst here, which allows them to ask questions about their role in the society and in return help break the shackles of tradition. The narrative follows the struggles these girls face from their families, neighbors and the society just to be able to go out of the house to play. Along the way they develop a sense of pride in what they are doing and also make their families proud of them.
This is a story about equality, courage, passion, dreams and aspirations. This is a story of breaking of societal norms by a group of teenage girls and proving their mettle on the ground. When girls play cricket, its more than one boundary, which breaks!
