    Whether first-generation student or multi-, no one really knows what to do coming in _(unless they learned so in their previous college experiences, which technically they should've)._ Doctoral programs need to contend with these knowledge/ skills gaps -- either require such prior experience, or explicitly teach it within the program.

    Thank you for addressing this subject. I feel like no one cares about this in Russia. I'm currently waiting for the decision of my department whether they are going to give me another supervisor. I've spent a month crying and being neglected. I really hope that this problem will be addressed and maybe my decision to take action will prevent me from getting my PhD but help others to be in a more healthy environment.

    A dear friend of mine recommended The Wounded Researcher to me a few years ago and I have read parts of it and referred to it many, MANY times throughout my doctoral study years. But, though it always spoke to me, it was not until after I had experienced a complete collapse and went into the depths for a while, did I really start to understand what he was saying in it. I am very grateful to Robert's book as, as far as I'm aware, it is the only book of its kind, that is, that gives permission for the soul to enter in research. It has been a wonderful companion in those aching, despairing, alone moments when you just can't seem to see where you're going with the work. Thank you for doing this interview, it was really lovely to listen to.

  • @richardgale4827

    So true, especially the 'mythic' context of unfinished business. This seems to me particularly relevant for older PhD students, for whom a thesis topic may have some relationship to the narrative framing of their life experiences to date, while those in their 20s undertake a PhD perhaps more in anticipation of future endeavours.

  • @richardgale4827
    @richardgale4827 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This certainly does resonate. I was in my late 40s before I finished my BA, just ending my (part-time) MA now, and burning to do a PhD. It's difficult to explain to people - even partners - why you need do something at an age when it doesn't make sound financial sense. It isn't the piece of paper or the letters after your name or some ceremony with a gown. I need to DO a research degree, to turn over rocks until I find something nobody else has found. Maybe explorers and round-the-world yachters understand that call.
