Water, Land, and Life Transforming Communities with Sand Dams and Permaculture
Witnessing the power of nature and the transformative impact of sand dams has been a highlight of our year at the Laikipia Permaculture Centre Trust. These incredible structures are not only capturing precious rainwater, but also restoring degraded landscapes and supporting thriving communities.
Sand dams recharge groundwater, creating a sustainable water source for both people and wildlife. They also help to reduce soil erosion and improve soil fertility, leading to healthier ecosystems.

A DROP OF HOPE
มุมมอง 202ปีที่แล้ว
For long, Priscilla Meitiaki, 29 and her neighbor Hellen Parkusaa, 43 have been accustomed to the strains of getting water for domestic use due to the prolonged drought that have been encountered in the Northern Kenya. The two are members of Naserian Self Help Group that hails from Ilmotiok village in Ilmotiok community land, Laikipia North Sub County and Laikipia County. We talked to the two o...
The Farming the Future Project
มุมมอง 547ปีที่แล้ว
The farming the Future project which was implemented by Laikipia Permaculture Centre Trust and IPSIA Kenya was a three year project which started in 2019 and ended in April 2023. Farming the Future project responded to key challenges identified among the agro-pastoral groups of Laikipia North Sub County, in the Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) of Northern Kenya. This are like limited access to w...
CLIMATE CHANGE CRISIS
มุมมอง 592 ปีที่แล้ว
Laikipia Permaculture Centre is doing a lot of projects in Laikipia North; like for example the sand dams which are concrete walls built across dry gulley's to slow, spread and sink the run off water into the landscapes. A mid climate change crisis these are technologies that we feel are doable and sustainable in the near future. This will help in restoring of ecosystems which are habitats for ...
DRYLANDS WATER HARVESTING TECHNIQUES- ILMOTIOK SAND DAM
มุมมอง 2012 ปีที่แล้ว
We believe that sand dams in their making do not deplete the aquivers but instead are able to tap the run off water which is able to sink and spread in the ecosystem. This works well especially in the drylands a technique that not so many know about. Together we can restore back our ecosystems and bring more water to the community.
LAIKIPIA REGENERATIVE AGROFORESTRY MODEL FARM
มุมมอง 3133 ปีที่แล้ว
Model farms are small plots with intertwined species focused on growing one or two main cash crops. The goal is to showcase the benefits of Regenerative Agriculture and inspire communities to join the transformation. And there is a good reason for developing regen Model Farms, because model farms serve two main goals: 1. Developing an example farm for specific crops 2. Supporting farmers with t...
TIAMAMUT SAND DAM PART 1
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is part of a series of sand dams being built by Laikipia Permaculture Centre in efforts to ensure that our community who live in the dry lands of Laikipia North benefit with water for domestic use and for their livestock. Joseph Lentunyoi puts it very clearly that this efforts will help restore degraded lands by ensuring that grass grow again as well as trees regenerate. By these we ensure...
How to utilize grey water to grow vegetables at your home
มุมมอง 1603 ปีที่แล้ว
Banana circle is a permaculture design that exemplifies the partnership between edible plants and waste. In a banana circle, different elements provide mutual benefits for each other. The design involves establishing a pit, fill it with organic waste and preferably link it with filtered grey water from bathrooms and/or kitchen. Then around the pit, plant different edible plants. Grey water from...
MAKURIAN MAIYIANAT SAND DAM
มุมมอง 2593 ปีที่แล้ว
Climate Resilient Solutions for Smallholder farmers(CRESS) is a project supported by BMZ, implemented by Laikipia Permaculture Centre Trust and Arche Nova together with communities in Laikipia North through sand dams which are small dams built above ground and into the riverbed of a seasonal sand river. Sand accumulates upstream of the dam, resulting in additional groundwater storage capacity.
Innovations by Laikipia Permaculture Centre
มุมมอง 3193 ปีที่แล้ว
Laikipia Permaculture Centre through its innovative ways has turned 'Cactus' which is a menace in Laikipia North into profitable and sustaining business. Initially cactus grow by seeds and pads but LPC uses Cactus fruit pulp to produce jam, juice and wine whereas the the seeds are pressed to produce oil which in turn is used to make cosmetics products like shampoos, aloe soaps made by our partn...

This is really nice, I live in Nanyuki (originally from US) and do agroecology. I've visited Laikipia Permaculture Research Center just past Jua Kali, but I didn't know there was another one. Very nice, I love watershed management. It's so fun to do these things and so important to restore the watershed and rainfall cycles.
