    Utter tosh. Ireland helped conserve one version of Christianity - a religion alien to Ireland. Ireland, in the literal sense of living in cities, wasn't even part of "civilization" at the time. Civilization went on elsewhere without any noticeable input from Ireland.

      Hi Mark, I you are right, but this project is dealing with the Latin West ( as opposed to Greek east) of the collapsing Roman empire. My click bait title (based on a best selling book ) doesn't do justice to the nuance of the European situation, let alone the other parts of the globe. I do deal with this in the book, but you will appreciate that it is hard to capture that in a thumbnail. Anyway, I appreciate your input and time. It was a first time film project for us (with no financial backing) and not without its flaws! God bless, Henry

    This is absolutely great content. Initially, I thought it might be related to the excellent book of a similar title , "How the Irish saved Civilisation"" (Thomas Cahiil).This is well worthy of a mainstream BBC slot. The production values and the content. Wish more of TH-cam was like this. Full of historical facts and a nuanced, intelligent context given to them. The presenter and his guests are first rate. You missed out a bit , it said Columbanus spent time on the lsland of iona and went on to convert the picts in Scotland before going to Europe. He also argued many points with the pope so wasn't that popular in Rome

    • @HenryVynerBrooks
      @HenryVynerBrooks หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Colin, Columbanus was probably named after Columba of Iona (as you might have been too perhaps?) but they are a generation apart. I do cover some of his correspondence with Pope Gregory later in the series, but as no replies exist we can only speculate how he was seen there. He calls himself 'a greenhorn' and 'a bumptious babble writing many things unbidden' which I think probably confirms your point! Anyway, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Best regards Henry.

    Patrick was roman and he came with an army from or a version to enforce the romantic version of Christianity our history is distorted. Patrick burnt all the books pertaining to Druidic history so the druids had no written history left and had to rely on oral tradition. The real story of Patrick is fabricated through our history.

    How weird, Atilla = man, Vikings = men Magyars =:men, but you distinguish the arabs by their religion and erase them and the Berbers substuting instead a religion. You did not say the Pagan Hun, nor pagan Magyars, but you do emphasise Muslim over Arab. How deep is the European hatred of Islam even though it has part of its history and culture for centuries and now you traipse around a country that took God out of the equation and put up man as their idol of worship. Columbanus is spinning in his grave.

    • @HenryVynerBrooks
      @HenryVynerBrooks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are right to make the distinction, I could have been clearer. In fact, I was interested that my Arab hosts in Arabia recently made great distinction between themselves and Muslim Turks. But the call of Islam as a political identity supersedes any ethnic or national affiliation. so in that regard, and when viewed by Columbanus' spiritual descendants, they did form a cohesive whole rather than specific ethic identities. Anyways, no offense intended and thanks for taking the time to watch and give me some feedback. Best regards Henry Vyner-Brooks

    • @foxa3824
      @foxa3824 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HenryVynerBrooks Thank you for taking the time to respond and no offence taken just annoyance that modern ideologies are being reflected backwards without even being noticed. The political identity of islam was always contested from within and was certainly not viewed as a political entity as we would think of it today. In my readings of these times the muslims were generally referred to as Saracens or Moors, their religion, when considered at all was to be dismissed as a heresy. I would agree that there certainly was a unique syncretism between state and the religion but a reading of historical texts from even the earliest times of islam shows that the "political" was initially completely subservient to the religion, but later fractured into many kingdoms with Sultans and Emirs acting according to their whims and often contrary to islamic principals, not at all a unified political islam. Not long after entering the region of what today is Southern France that unity faltered and broke. Men being men, power was more attractive. and spreading God's word was of secondary importance. It was not long before the Franks were sending ambassadors to Al Andalus and vice versa. In fact the Ambassador to the Frankish court from the Caliphate of Al Andalus was a Christian Bishop. I do not think that in the years following the invasions it was viewed in a political context as we see Islam today . The one thing that islam did in the early days was provide security for different christian sects within their polity was to offer them protection to practice their faith in a way that they might not have been able under other Christian powers. When Columbanus and his Irish monks came to the main land of Europe the question is why? There were plenty of Christians in what was then the Frankish kingdoms and indeed all the way to Rome and the Iberian peninsula. From Columbanus' perspective, though, the mainland was full of heretics, the wrong sort of Christian. From today's perspective he was a fundamentalist. The Vandals of Iberia were predominantly Arian Christians only converting to Catholicism shortly before the Arab invasion. Then in keeping with the intolerance of that religion began the persecution of Jews and non Catholic Christians. Religion was certainly co-opted to serve political agendas in Europe much the same way secularism or other ideologies are co-opted by states or groups today I'm just not sure that it is cohesive. Anyway sorry for the long rambling epistle. I am enjoying your excellent series. I start episode 7 tonight and do hope to continue to the end. As a lover of all things history, I very much appreciate this work .
