Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendship
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 พ.ค. 2023
Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendship is a podcast to discuss the highs and lows of friendship. Why isn't your friend texting you back? She's mad at you! Just kidding, she's probably not. But maybe she is? See what I mean! Friendship is tricky, even for grownups. On Dear Nina we discuss friendship dilemmas and how to make all of your friendships easier. Why? Friendship is so important for mental and even physical health. You’d think after answering anonymous friendship questions since 2014 that I’d be sick of the topic. I’m not! I’m more interested than ever about why some friendships work and some don’t. On Dear Nina I've covered how to end a friendship, whether texting is enough to sustain a friendship, setting boundaries with friends who ask for a lot of favors, what to do if you’re always the friend who initiates contact first, and lots more. We talk about making friends, keeping friends, and taking all the drama and confusion out of our adult friendships.

💠 The negativity bias in friendships and moving towards curiosity instead
Why does the inner judge in our brains automatically default to negativity? We assume the worst and let our insecurities lead the way. How does this inner judge interfere with our friendships? And what can we do to create curiosity instead of negativity?
💠 Ann Imig, creator and author of @LTYMShow and life coach at Listen Life Coaching, is here with practical tools that will help keep the judge at bay. Ann encourages “curiosity, celebrating, and savoring” in our friendships, “showing up when you show up,” and utilizing the words and mindset of “tell me more.”
💠 We also discussed the role Ann (indirectly) played in my decision to start writing about friendship in 2014!

I loved the insights on how this bias can affect our perceptions and interactions, and the advice on how to balance our thinking and appreciate the good is spot on. Understanding this concept is key to maintaining healthy and fulfilling friendships. Thanks for sharing such valuable information!"👏👏❤❤
Rita! Thank you for listening and commenting. Ann is such a soothing presence and her advice is so doable.
Thanks to Ann Imig, who founded @LTYMshow for providing so much practical friendship advice in today's episode.
Excellent conversation Nina. I Love this episode❤
Thank you SO much!
I love answering listeners questions!
You CAN improve your group texts! For starters, people do not need to heart or "like" every post. I have lots to say on this topic and thank you to my guest, Kat Vellos for the great chat.
Yes…cause I won’t listen to anything that’s over a year old….absolutely you need numbers or date in the tittle😊
I've been adding all the numbers back today!
Thank you to Matt and Karo of @manoftheyearpodcast! We covered some good friendship dilemmas here!
Depends on the length? Lex Friedman (sp) I think used numbers, don’t watch him anymore? Personally I like the season:episode set up, only time I have found sequential numbering helpful is from the lock picking layers channel
I'm just starting to add them back!
i loved the movie but i thought that is was too short ik it was almost 3 hours but they could have gone more in depth about the other characters and showed us a story line explaining who they are and were they came form. I love musical movies but what i didnt like is the fact that most of the songs were intrupted by dialouge. also i didnt like how they shortend the stages of the film even though i didnt read the book or watched the stage play i noticed that the stages of the film were shortend.
I really think you'd get a lot out of reading the Wicked book. As I'm sure you've heard, it's much more involved and quite dark too. Tons of background on the characters and the way things work in Oz.
There's a part 2 to the movie coming out soon where it goes more into the characters and all of that.
@@UrBestieNate Yep that's all in the stage and even more so in the book but for the movie newbies, will be a fun ride.
@@dearninafriendship I love seeing everyone's reactions and opinions on the movie when they haven't seen the musical or the books. And they're all loving it so far🥳
@@UrBestieNate I agree! I don't think I've seen a negative review so far. (Maybe other than the length?)
Feel free to share any Wicked newbie posts with me!
Thanks for sharing this
My pleasure. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you @DiamondeWilliamson for the work you do!
Hey Nina Thanks for sharing this! I Love this my Friend.
Thanks for listening/watching!
Most people would like a thank you here and there.
I just say you wanna do something meet me there. Dont say what we will do it will make you guys don't do anything
That's a fair point, but definitely works best when the thing is activity based. It's more about seeing the person (and it doesn't matter what the activity is) then it does get more complicated.
I don't hangout with anyone. Seriously! The best way to avoid problems. Just staying home with my wife and dog😊
It's nice you have your wife though! For people who are truly alone, they really do need to make an effort to see people. (for mental and even physical health)
Short answer-- there are no rules for making plans with friends. Longer answer-- listen to the 16 minute episode.
Always make sure you have a double opt-in!
"Such an inspiring video! 🙌 The 6 ways to become a more generous friend are not only practical but truly transformative.❤❤
Wow! Thank you so much.
Thank you to Emma Nadler for the great tips on friendship and the fun, honest conversation.
Thanks Nina! Thanks for sharing your excellent interview
Thank you for the comment!
Friendships drift apart for so many reasons. Often times it's nothing personal or hurtful and one or two of those friends might be worth reconnecting with if you're lonely or just looking for new friends. Maybe your "new" friend will be an old friend.
Has a doctor ever told you to take an art class? What would you think if that's how your appointment went?
Hey Nina! Thanks for sharing this podcast❤ Love it.
Oh wow thank you!
💯
Yes!
What are your hobbies?
Mine is playing dungeons and dragons but it’s been hard to find people in my area to play with so I do it online, still I would love to play at a local store though
@@evilwizard205 You could consider approaching a local store to say you'd lead a night (meaning sending reminders and just keeping the group on a text or email thread perhaps) if they'd let customers know it was happening.
What are the hobbies you're trying these days? What are the hobbies you'd like to try? Don't wait!
I loved making this episode with @AllisonGilbert who did such important work with Dr. Ruth's wise words on loneliness and friendship.
The wise @allisongilbert discussing her work with Dr. Ruth on loneliness and having meaningful friendships.
Really it's those first few days of college.
Best movie! And LOVE LOVE LOVE this scene. Underrated moment.
Thank you to @allisongilbert for sharing so much wisdom from her time with Dr. Ruth. I loved The Joy of Connections and think everyone should read it!
The key is to capture those first few days, even in new situations as an adult.
Thank you, @Christinaswilcox for sharing your Enneagram expertise!
I'm in the process of getting an autism assessment with the help of my therapist & currently watching videos on friendships(which I've never understood & have often been heartbroken). This video was insightful💯 I relate on no chittychatty when doing group activities(like why are people trying to hold conversations at a club or while hiking???? This has always been very difficult & tiring to me)
I hope that through more understanding of situations and the kinds of connections that work well for you, there will be less heartbreak!
No better friendship quote!
This is my mom's fourth visit to my show and she's always a listener favorite!
This ended up being a really popular episode. I'm sorry to hear that many people relate! It's a frustrating friendship issue. Episode 111 of Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendship.
Thank you to Kate Proger, college consultant, for visiting Dear Nina: Conversations About Friendship.
I'd love to hear if you share your list or not?
Thanks to Mia Brabham. Nolan for talking to me about the tricky topic of money and friendship!
Thank you to Kate Proger for providing her expertise on college admissions in this discussion on friendship!
So helpful in understanding social styles of certain relatives, friends, even myself!! Thanks to James Richardson and Nina!
So happy to hear you found it helpful. Thanks for watching/listening.
Let us know if you've had this problem of the friend who never asks about YOU!
I've been wondering if *quiet quitting* was the same as *ghosting* or *breadcrumbing* ...
They're for sure different. More subtle, I'd say. More like a slow (and oftentimes natural) fade out.
Thank you to James F. Richardson for sharing his experiences.
thanks again for having me and doing all the production!
Shut up
Thank you to @drmiriamkirmayer for being such a wise a wonderful guest!
Sounds very neurotypical
In addition to sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, I also covered the special nature of "friendship" between roommates, cousins, and neighbors. These are all different than a regular friendship.
