Charter sailing - when things go bad
Surprise storm on May 29th, 2014 off the coast of Santorini with 70 knot winds. We knew there were winds that day but it was not forecasted to be this high. There were two other sailboats around us, all headed for protection of a nearby island. It made it especially difficult as our roller furling kept jamming several days prior.

First of all: Thanks for sharing, a lot of people can learn from your experience. Wow, what an intense experience! 70 knots is no joke-it's incredible how you managed to navigate through that, especially with a malfunctioning roller furling. Glad to hear you and the other boats found safety near the island. Respect to sailors who can handle such unpredictable conditions!
When captain says life jackets on there should be no delay.
Sorry for my poor nautical English. Too much Genoa at the beginning and with furling Genoa it’s really tough in high winds because the sail stays high up when half-rolled-up, making the boat tilt more than it should, so headsail in that case should be way smaller than main. These guys had more Genoa out than main! They try to go into the wind to furl up more sail, but they fail because the Genoa sends them away from the wind. They should have gone downwind at that point and try to furl up a bit more or in any case have an easier and safer ride Contrary to what many are saying here, do not go forward and try to unjam the furler! Especially if untethered! You will get injured in those conditions! Yes at that point the Genoa shredding is good news, because it reduces sail power. People saying that the dinghy was unsecured have never been in high winds! Yes, they all should have been wearing harnesses or sent down below with closed deckhouse. Also: chartered boats don’t have sea anchors (at least I have never seen one) and sea anchors can be dangerous when in proximity of land. Most of the mistakes were made before the filming started, but judging from a video is really difficult and unfair.
Thanks for posting this video. We all make mistakes and this is very educational. I've had the foresail jam on me as well and it was a bitch to sort out and the winds weren't even close to what you experienced. I guess all the snide comments on here are the price to pay for sharing your honest experience, again thanks!
Head to wind. Cast both sheets off…
🤬🤯

Аварийная ситуация возникла только потому что они не опытны и в панике , лодка в порядке, вовремя не взяли рифы, но никакой катастрофы пока нет...
When the wind gets up no one wants to leave the 'safety' of the cockpit. With no harnesses maybe the best place to be!
People should not mess with water, especially when you put people who trust you in danger.
Looks like they had no business being out there 🙀😱🫣
Why not turn up into the wind to stop that insane heeling?!
Any Roller furlings systems are dangerous In heavy Sea conditions
Who is the captain on board ? Standart weather. But helsman absolutely stupid and skipper license of this captain is fake.
Weather routing !
Wenn die Hobby-Stümper unterwegs sind....
Why do I think that a ship owner would have reefed the genoa much earlier? Sudden strong winds are not that unusual in the Aegean ... by the way, it's time to put on a life jacket and send the crew below deck, at the latest when you have to hold on ...
le bateau n'a pas de voie d'eau tout fonctionne... laissez le 16 tranquille

This is a video on how not to sail. Glad none were hurt or worse. To anyone watching this is a how and what not to do video
He has his sailing gloves on!
Well done guys. Thanks for posting
Not a PFD to be seen. Ok, here they come. Not a moment too soon.
Oh, a little duck tape and it'll be good as new. 😂
Unbelievable….. Captain Dick is at the helm…….
Skipper couldn't see the danger coming through his dark shades he was wearing. It screams from far away - I might be dumb but still cool

Agree. This person was clearly in over their head. More money than brains.
We sailed on great basin lake by a best sunny day when suddenly the wind changed its energy by strengthen and weaken his force almost rhytmically. A swingings of fear came into my mind and I followed the intuition and let put all sails down. Just finished a giant wall of wind - out of nirwana - was falling down on all boats on the lake, rupting all sails at once with big bangs and caused high waves also in the port nearby where all ships were jammed and crashed into a pulk of madness. So we were lucky and our boat didn't "earn" any damage just by given attention to the warning feelings...
I didn't see a single crewman on the foredeck to un-jam the furler. Of course, the entire video is junk and poor editing, if any. Are these credit card captains and crew?
“Well done captain” 😂😂 that was the worst captain and helming I’ve ever seen. The guy filming isn’t the smartest dude
there are some things i dont understand. it seems they had no life jackets with tethering on board only plain jackets, okay, but why are all people in the cockpitt than? two outside would be enough in that situation. why didnt they let the jib fly on the stag? i have seen some videos of this kind, and the furler seems to fail often in such conditions, thats why im still using hank on sails with downhaul line. never have seen this with hank on sails.
As you can read here, best skippers always stand on land.
How dare this crew to go sail whit paying passengers. I even think they had no insurance. Their stupidity knows no boundaries. They did everything wrong. What a mess.
At :38 why are you not sailing back towards the coast. there you all are acting happy for the camera sailing right into the storm?? Are you out of your mind?
Best one ever!
It turned gnarly REALLY quickly. Glad everyone was safe.
Не работает скрутка стакселя, значит майнаем его по фалу
Представляете, если бы они и грот не скрутили тоже...😢😢😢 Да, тут все опытные яхтсмэны дают ссоветы, как нужно было поступать.
Surprise ??? It was already in the beginning to much for this People
Ah, the joys of in mast reefing. Not a life jacket in site.
the headline is wrong, it should be renamed, like, "when retards charter a boat"
IDIOTS IDIOTS PEOPLE, CAPTAIN FIRST
