    Hi, bunny owner and jewelry artist here, who uses these tools regularly. (beautiful bun btw) Please note- even though a bunny can't feel the cutting, these tools heat up and they absolutely can feel that. It's important to 'stop start' even if you have the urge to get it done fast. It's even better if you get a tool that allows you to change the speed.

    is the burrow protection screen on the bottom actually neccessariy if you are growing out for butchering? I was under the impression that rabbits didnt start burrowing till they were a bit older, and that if you butcher them before they reach that stage then the bottom screen is not needed. Is that incorrect?

  • @g3monster89
    @g3monster89 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using a nail trimmer would be fine too and lower impact...Rabbit teeth are essentially the same material as nails...best way i've found to do it with minimal stress is to wrap up your bunny but keep the legs on the floor instead of putting the rabbit on its back and then use a really sharp pair of cat nail clippers and quickly reach in...If your clippers are sharp enough you'll be in and out in a couple of seconds for each set. Minimal stress and your bunny will just bounce away like nothing happened and go back to eating.

    • @ThePrognoid
      @ThePrognoid ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a much higher risk of shattering the tooth with nail trimmers, in my experience. Not recommended. But you do you.

    • @g3monster89
      @g3monster89 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePrognoid Never had that issue and I had 5 bunnies from the same litter with this issue...they were given away because no one wanted to deal with them...must be super sharp clipper or yes you could fracture the teeth...I did it every week as they grew though so i only needed to take a few 16ths at a time which results in less stress on the teeth if using this method.

    • @jennywilliams-jva
      @jennywilliams-jva ปีที่แล้ว

      We're you able to cut without causing further damage on each occasion?

    • @g3monster89
      @g3monster89 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jennywilliams-jva Yes...never had an issue just have to keep the clippers at a 30gram or less sharpness (with 10lb fishing line) on a knife sharpness tester...It slices through the tooth so easily it's like a hot knife through butter...almost 0 resistance...The biggest thing is sharpen the blades after every use and if the blade is ever deformed replace it don't even think about trying to save it.Steel is cheap but critical care for 4 weeks while the tooth regrows isn't...If you don't have a sharpness tester the next best method is to get some 80lb braided nylon fishing line and use your clippers to cut it...If you can't cut through it easily while using only 2 fingers your clippers aren't up to the job

    How comes a pedigreed rabbit has such upper front teeth? They are completely growing apart! Also, the reason why it's bad to put a rabbit on its back, is because of the burden it puts on its fragile heart (the same heart that so often stops during surgery). So no, it's not 'safe', especially when it takes that much time to trim two teeth. And last, it's not only the front teeth that grow constantly, it's all of them. So if you're going to get a rabbit's teeth checked, go to a vet and have the back teeth checked too, because if the front teeth are in that state, there are big chances that the back teeth are in poor health too.

    • @ThePrognoid
      @ThePrognoid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off, I think you're putting too much weight on a pedigree. A pedigree is only a record of Ancestry. Even the most highly pedigreed rabbits can have genetic flaws. Second, while it's not ideal to put a rabbit on its back, it's the best way to get the job done and keep the rabbit safe. I'm sure you'd agree it's better for the rabbit to endure being on his back for a few minutes than to let him starve to death because of a malocclusion preventing him from being able to eat. Third, very few people have the budget to be able to take a rabbit to the vet every few weeks to have his teeth trimmed and if they do, vets that will work on rabbits at all can be hard to find. Maybe that's not the case in your area but in my experience, yeah...good luck finding a vet that will do this for you.

    Looks good! Only criticism I would have is either take the the rabbits out when you move the tractor, or remake the bottom with a mesh small enough that their paws can’t get stuck in it.

    • @ThePrognoid
      @ThePrognoid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Never had an issue with feet getting caught in over two years of use. The rabbits easily "ride" on the wire when it's moved and the larger holes allow for grass to easily protrude so the rabbits can enjoy it.

    In all honesty, I didn't understand this until I dealt with this situation myself. Laying a rabbit on their back is bad, but it keeps it from doing more damage to itself, and if you go quickly enough it lessens the trauma. Yes, going to a vet would be best, but not many people have an extra $300 a month. I wasn't told about my rabbit's issues and the lady left asap. I was blindsided with all of these issues and am thinking about rehoming him, but again, not many people are willing to WILLINGLY take a rabbit like this. They would most likely be euthanized before finding a home. The cons: rabbit has to be awake, which could cause shock pros: rabbits is able to eat, not die of infection from wounds caused by teeth, and can live a happy rest of it's life.

    Hey! I breed rabbits. They can be pretty well sexed at 6 weeks. Next time check them before you leave. I also had many hiccups starting my program. I was sold a PROVEN doe that ended up being male. I was sold a doe that didn't even get pregnant until 14 months (would NOT lift but was my favourite so we kept her till this spring.. she gave me a healthy litter of 11 thank god)! I was sold a standard rex buck that ended up being a mini rex. So many things gone wrong. That was all last year. This year I have my NZ girl who is finally breeding well, a different proven doe who Is actually a doe, a rescue Californian cross buck from an AWFUL meat breeder (lucky me he is VERY willing to breed), and a new baby girl who is a flemish cross NZ I will be breeding in a few months. It took time but this year our operation is looking very promising. We are heading into our 3rd litter this week sometime. I wish you good luck don't give up! Rabbit is an excellent substitute for chicken and once you get the groove you will be overwhelmed with babies :)

    My place is double fenced and I have 2 LGD that protect my property. Nothing gets into my fence or property including humans. Even though I live in a rural area people think they can let their dogs run loose. I had 1 dog tried to get into my property but was not successful.

    I raised rabbits for 30 years. The past 3 years I have had only silver fox rabbits. I wanted to purchase some different rabbits but are now very difficult to find. I would have to travel 51/2 hours each way. Not able to do that. I wanted some more diverse genetics but have not had any success. I live in VA. One person had some but no pedigrees says not worth his time.

      I've got to drive a good little bit, not 5 1/2 hours though, to get good rabbits. I'm actually got it on the calendar in a couple more weeks to go pick up a couple more silver fox does and a giant chinchilla doe. Very excited for that!

    The trimming itself mayeby not hurt, but it does cause a lot of stress, which is traumatising and can be deadly to rabbits. Not to think if something goes wrong.

      No doubt it can be stressful. Unfortunately it's either that, cull, or let the poor thing starve.

    I don't know if you bought your new stock from the same breeder you acquired the rabbit with malocclusion from but I would say if you did, avoid them in the future. 1 its extremely unethical to sell a rabbit with malocclusion + it being miss sexxed. 2. If you bought 2 more from the same person that were also miss sexxed I would say that is deliberate and they are just after your money. You should pretty accurately be able to tell sex with kits after having a hand full of litters. Which is why I am saying you were probably lied too. There are a lot of people who get into fox to sell them for more than a NZW. And to take advantage of people wanting to get heritage breed rabbits. When in reality there are A LOT of shitty low quality silver fox out there that people are breeding for money and not for breed conservation. These people are not breeding towards SF Standard of perfection (SOP). 100% think you should be looking on craigslist right now and try to find any breeding age doe and not silver fox does only. There are a lot of people downsizing there rabbitrys right now because feed costs are going up. Also people who started meat rabbits last year and don't enjoy them. I think you'll be better off with some experience first rather than keep spending money on pedigreed rabbits and getting ripped off. Get yourself some NZ does or NZ cali cross does or Rex does. I see tons of breeding age does listed right now in my area. You can always sell them later as proven breeders once you have gotten a litter or two out of them. Pedigree doesn't mean quality. Obviously we all here love the silver fox but it also sucks to be ripped off when you are still new at rabbits. You'll know what to look for better when you have had a few litters yourself.
