Cave Diving - Mapping Cenote Dos Palmas
I am thrilled to announce that as of January 2022, I have completed the Dos Palmas map! The project required over 70 sketching dives to map a total of 11,431 meters / 37,503 feet of underwater cave passages, including 4376 meters / 14,356 feet of newly explored cave. With average dive times of 180 - 200 minutes, that translates to over 220 hours of work, not including resurvey, exploration, or drafting.
The map will be available at the following dive shops:
Third Dimension Diving: www.thirddimensiondiving.com/
Protec Dive Centers: protecdivecenters.com/
Under The Jungle: www.underthejungle.com
Underworld Tulum: underworldtulum.com/
Cenote Dos Palmas is a classic example of Yucatan Peninsula cave diving. A labyrinth of decorated cave passages, shallow depths, and pristine visibility make it one of the most popular entrances to the Dos Ojos section of Sistema Sac Actun.

Cave diving at Cenote Dos Palmas
มุมมอง 2.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Over the last 14 months, I've been working on mapping the Dos Palmas section of Sistema Sac Actun in Tulum, Mexico. With over 11,500 meters / 38,000 feet of surveyed passages now mapped, I am finally in the finishing stages of the project and working my way through the cave to finish up the many small exploration leads I've discovered along the way. Mexico cave diving in Sistema Exploradora

Sistema Exploradora is a 6.8 kilometer flooded cave system that is unique to the Yucatan Peninsula as it branches out from a sump almost 300 meters into a dry cave, rather than one of the regions many famous cenotes. Insane work! For your survey board, is that just a Suunto A-10 that you've flooded or do they make oil-filled compasses? 0:24

    i admire your and David work but i think that to be more practical you should ignore colors and add markers position that are references for orientation

    How about mapping via photogrammetry? Just dive through slowly enough, have at least 4 (better 6) GoPros mounted and enough storage space.

    How is this water so clear? You don't even look like you're in water. It's one of the most incredible places I've ever seen. I find what you do really fascinating. Do people hire you to do this or is it just a hobby? Do you get paid or is it just for fun? Your maps are truly works of art. Do you see yourself as an artist, are you an artist? I'm just so curious. What is your day job, or is this it? It's very cool of you to offer free instructions. It speaks to the love of cave diving as a sport for others to enjoy. I'm going to binge your other videos to see if you answer these questions. So glad Dive Talk featured you. This was really cool. You're so humble too! Thanks for sharing!

      The caves here are really just the most spectacular thing I've ever seen - I basically decided to move here from Canada after a 1 week dive trip :) For the moment I am only mapping as a hobby but I do sell my maps to offset some of the cost of making them. I am slowly beginning to see myself as more of an artist and I think that it will change how I work on future projects. I will always continue to make maps for divers but I am beginning to experiment with different mediums to present my cartography in ways that allow for more creativity. I am currently occupied with a non-diving related project but will be back to making maps, and uploading regular videos soon :) Cheers

      Thank you for taking time to answer. I love that youre allowing your creativity to grow and evolve. So many get pigeonholed into one narrow form of their art or job. You clearly have that adventurous, entrepreneurial soul that allows you to adapt. I love that! Looking forward to see what you do next! Cheers. Sherri

    Saw you in Dive Talk, very cool work! I am no cave diver, but could you please explain to me, why you would go Sidemount OC instead of CCR? I would consider CCR to be ideal for the long work in the cave. Greetings from Germany! :)

    • @surveydown
      @surveydown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! OC vs CCR is a common question, and in my specific case, it really comes down to depth. I am working in shallow caves and while I could dive longer on a CCR, I don't actually want to dive longer than 4 hours unless it is necessary. Here is my answer to a similar question from the Dive Talk video that explains further: "The majority of the caves here in the Riviera Maya are in the 20-45 ft average depth range, and so open circuit is by far the more popular choice for cave diving. In Dos Palmas I was usually working between 15-30 ft of depth, and was able to happily dive for 3-4 hours on open circuit, and while I could have dived longer on a rebreather, there was probably only 10 dives throughout the entire project where I would have actually stayed an extra hour... sketching can be significantly more mentally exhausting than regular cave diving so, I am usually ready to leave around the 3.5 hour mark anyway. Also, in those depth ranges my cost per dive on a rebreather would be about 3x the price of open circuit (sorb and O2 are expensive!). With that said, once you hit an average depth range of around 60+ ft, rebreathers become more efficient and I would seriously consider one for mapping. Fortunately for me, most of my projects are shallow!" Cheers

    Ill be receiving my open water certification very soon, I have no diving experience but cant wait to start. My ultimate goal is to get into cave diving although I know that is many years down the road. I always tell myself theres no way I would ever become a cave explorer/mapper because of the inherent risks but the way you make it look so artful and fun makes me second guess myself. A question I wish Dive Talk asked for clarification on is why do you opt for side mount/open circuit opposed to a rebreather? I think every cave diver Ive watched up until this point has used a rebreather so Im curious why you dont use one too?

    • @surveydown
      @surveydown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, I hope you enjoy your open water course! If you end up addicted to diving, your cave training might not be so far away as you think - I started about 18 months after my open water cert! To answer your question regarding rebreathers; The majority of the caves here in the Riviera Maya are in the 20-45 ft average depth range, and so open circuit is by far the more popular choice for cave diving. I keep staring at the maps you have on your website... just remarkable. The work you are doing is NEXT LEVEL! I'll say it a million times: You are setting the example in how you are sharing knowledge, and experience. So many people hoard things, to make them secret, and unsharable so THEY are the expert. This kind of behavior is silly. You are acting like a scientist AND an artist. Admirable. Admirable.
