People definitely care. Whole youtube channels have been built up around people complaining about race-swapping and all that. I think there's an obvious bias in the game- and not just for light skin versus dark. Even the supposedly Japanese and Chinese and Middle Eastern characters don't look the part. At best, some get a few shades darker, but still maintain European features. I remember being confused when I read the manga "Monster" for the first time and it said the main character was Asian...but he looked European. Then I realized that was quite common in Asian manga to have European-looking characters that are described as Asian. MAYBE dress like Asians, but they are clearly European. Weird world. Then again...Japan is a virtual colony of the US and has been for decades so...I can see why they would idolize that image.
