1973 VW Super Beetle having problems when idling. When purchased it made the 90 minute drive home with no issues, and around town with no problems. A week later it started cutting out while driving

Im a bit younger than that but yeah definitely for the old heads! We are doing the full "Love Machine" replica as time allows, check out the other video to see it's current state.
What is with the upside down exhaust tips they look doofy
It's a movie car, thanks for stopping by!
I wouldnt change a thing on that whip....I would pimp that ride just like it is....
My favorite question is "what color are you going to paint it?"
@@TheLoveMachineImpala i would not paint a thing just keep it clean and runnin good....
Looks great and sounds great. Must be those tail pipe extensions.

Thanks so much! Still hard to wrap my head around every time I see it, it's like driving a giant Hot Wheels toy 😍
Lol where is your California tags 😅 I'm a SoCal native and that's not Compton lol.
They are replicas from amazon of the old school tags from the '70s, I use them for shows and whatnot!
@TheLoveMachineImpala It would have had black and yellow plates in CA. The blue and yellow were new for 1970.
@@thomasthurston6656 yeah my 54 chevy had the blue plates better than the modern white ones.
@JulioforChrist They would have been yellow and black.
@@thomasthurston6656 yup unfortunately that's how I got it
yes i wanna see more of this classic.
I just uploaded another video and will be posting more as we make progress, thanks for showing some love!
@@TheLoveMachineImpala ok Bro. im on it.
man she sounds so damn good🎶
Music to my ears for sure, doesn't bother me at all that there is no speakers installed while we finish the interior! Thanks!
Cheech and Chongs......Love Machine....i know that Chevy anywhere.
Doesn’t sound like a 350, what cam and exhaust manifolds/ headers do you have.
It really surprised me after cutting off the stock exhaust. It is a TKD code smallblock out of a c10. Holley 650cfm on an Edelbrock intake manifold. I imagine there is a mild cam, and it has a rams horn exhaust manifold to the 2.5". I'm eyeballing a set of the Hedman Impala headers but I am happy with where it's at in the meantime and have other stuff higher on the to-do list, currently working on the interior. I'll post another video that shows a bit more hopefully in the next couple of days!
Posted a quick video today that has a clip of the engine bay if you'd like to see the setup. Will be posting more as we make progress. Thanks for stopping by!
That license plate!! 🤣🤣🤣👍
😍😍😍😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love your beetle
Poor engine hes fllooded it
I had this problem as well. There were two problems that needed to be addressed in this order. First, I added dry gas to the fuel tank (we has a winter/spring with a lot of heavy blowing rain storms) and changed the fuel filter. Although the gas was fresh the car had sat for all the prior year. I assumed that the winter gas (full of ethanol) also loosened up sediments that went down stream to clog stuff up. That led me to pull the carburator jet, which I found was indeed restricted with sediment. I used a pin, brake clean and compressed air to clean it out. Put it back in and the car then idled on its own! Secondly, i sprayed brake clean around all the potential vacuum leak locations and found that an old hose on the carburator was leaking. Replaced the hose and tightened the clamps and the idle picked up well. Took me three days of thinking/guessing/‘youtubing’ and 10 minutes to fix. Thank you VW (TH-cam) community!
Das ist fantastich.
Idle screw is dirty
I love Volkswagens
Ignition system needs checking, check carb, fuel pump, you getting fuel? jets clogged?
he didnt even let it idle wasnt constant in rev. so showed nothing.
electromagnetic carb valve
There was a combination of issues at the time of this video, a bad fuel filter, and probably the cheapest carburetor you could find. The engine was starved of fuel, after replacing the carb and setting the timing she ran like a top.
What carb did you end up going with? I have a 74 super that seems to run great with a pict 34-3, did put much larger jets in to compensate for a mild cam and bigger bore exhaust, still good fuel mileage and easy to tune vs twin carbs
Dont forget the idle adjustment.....sometimes thats all it is....
With an air-cooled *ALWAYS* start with the valves & take it from there. This sounds like a piece of dirt in the idle jet
Dump the after market air cleaner get the stock setup which has the proper warmup equipment
The problem seems to be at the ignition timing
did you check the idle screw
I'm having the same issue with my 71 super beetle. Did you find out what it was causing this problem?
I am working to fix a very similar problem on my Thing (same engine). I believe it is being caused by an air leak. Did you have success fixing this?
Right ok, have you done the timing? And try replacing the coil, when they get hot they have a tendency to brake down causing the engine to stall when being driven.
Check your fuel pump is working looks to be fuel related problem but could be electrical, check fuel filter and fuel pump and go from there into coil, ht leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, points and spark plugs
+AggressiveTechChile I have the same issue with my 71 super beetle. Did you happen to find out what it was?
Ernie Velasco if you haven't already resolved your problem, it was a cheap chinese carb and cheap lawnmower air filter that was causing the majority of the issue.
A big problem is caused by carbon blocked heat risers in the manifold under the carb. Its a days work to take off the manifold, clean it out and another day to put back together with new gaskets.
