In October 2008 I was training in Jamaica for an upcoming counter insurgency operation in Afghanistan. So I took that opportunity to find Freddie Johnston’s grave (a relative from back home) . Sadly, the Commonwealth war graves were not being maintained to CWGC standards, in fact I had a hard time finding the graves as the grass was growing above the tops of the grave markers. So, I took a machete to the clear the grave of Johnston and the soldier who was killed with him. My next step was to send an e-mail to the HQ of the CWGC to let them know their contractor was just taking their money and not doing a stitch of work around the graves. CWGC got things sorted out PDQ; as did the Jamaican Defence Force who own the cemetery where 10 of the 174 Commonwealth war graves are those of Canadians. NIced to see that there was indeed a follow up.

Britain won the War of 1812. Foremost American authority on of the War of 1812 Donald Hickey admits that: “But the United States failed to conquer Canada, and the maritime issues were not even mentioned in the peace treaty. By any reasonable measure, Republican war policy was a failure, and the United States actually lost the war-even if it has never acknowledged the fact.” Donald Hickey “Who Really Won the War of 1812?”, 2002 After the Louisiana Purchase the Jeffersonianism desire to acquire the Floridas meant supporting Republican France and instilling hostility to Britain and her ally, Spain. Brown-nosing Bonaparte, the “ogre of Europe”, the US administration even refused to recognise the legitimacy of Ferdinand VII, usurped by Napoleon . The extent of the USA’s grubby dealings with Napoleon is covered in ‘The Pan-American Policy of Jefferson and Wilkinson’ by Isaac Cox. US ambitions of aggrandizement and conquest were directed against Canada. The evidence from sessions of 12th Congress, The Legislature of Massachusetts (June 1813), Article XI of the USA Articles of Confederation, territorial ambitions elsewhere and the proclamations demonstrate that conquest and annexation of British North America was the goal. If the USA had won then there wouldn’t be a Canada today. “We shall drive the British from our continent. I therefore feel anxious not only to add the Floridas to the South, but the Canadas to the North of this empire.” Felix Grundy, Speech, in Annals of Congress, 12th Cong., 1st Sess. But the USA failed to conquer Canada. They also failed to address any of the casus belli in the peace treaty, leaving British maritime belligerent rights intact. These same ‘rights’ saw the Royal Navy searching US ships in her blockade of Africa to stop the Atlantic Slave Trade. The Orders in Council of the Napoleonic era were repeated a century later by the Orders in Council of 1915, this time prohibiting US trade with Germany. So much for the American boast that conquest of Canada would be a "mere matter of marching" or that the USA won "freedom of the seas". And before any American mentions New Orleans … “The Battle of New Orleans, although fought after Britain had signed and ratified the peace treaty, played a particularly important role in forging the myth of American victory” (page 316 'The War of 1812: A Forgotten Conflict'). That's all American 'victory' is - a myth.

In order to start a war ones Country needs something to gain out of it for the Americans it was stopping the British from drafting soldiers for there war against France. For the Canadians it was repelling the Americans Soldiers which they did stopping the Americans from conquering any land objectives. The key objectives for the Americans were to stop British from harassing there navy and forcefully drafting there Sailors, show that Americans are not weak, and Conquer Canada. Two where completed but Lose in the conquer Canada part but they still Won in a way since there completed most of there Goals. Canadians only objective was repelling the Americans Soldiers Which they Completed so Canadians Say they won because they Completed there only Goal. For the British, the British Reinforcements Landed on American Soil went straight to Washington DC and Burned down the White House That was British Win Not Canadians But it did help Canadians Moral Boost. Even the British won something in this war and only lose Little in this war they only lost there Drafting source but gained Moral since they Burned down the Americans White House. Now looking at Americans and Canadians only BOTH SIDES WIN why is that? Both sides completed there Goals Expect one the Americans Goal on conquer Canada. So who mostly won this war? the Canadians and British in terms of who Completed there Goals. If i left some stuff out Please go right ahead and reply.

Oh must of miss the Notification year back. Yes we were a British Colony back then just like America Once. But we differently had a sense of Identity Nationality like most English founded Colonies. If we did not have such sense of Identity do you think America would have had sought Independence?

well canada and great britian both fought and plus britian was rich and cananda was helped out greatly by britian and may have won the battle for canada and destroyed d.c. but by the end of the war the u.s. destroyed tons of the british navy and army. the reasons why we lost some major battles is because the u.s. was not very rich and those big battles were to be lost about 8 times out of 10 because of how many troops and resources britian had but historicly we (the u.s.) won. continued above

What? Most of the British navy and army was in Europe at the time. Tons is an exaggeration

...? London didn't start the war. Washington DC did. The Indian raids 'stopped' because the Yanks genocided the living sheet out of the true American Nations; Andrew Jackson was a monster: not a Hero. The British occupied modern Maine, periodically modern Michigan, and crippled the economy with a naval blockade. American sovereignty wasn't in jeopardy; no one in Europe could've given less poops about this baby republic. They were busy with Napoleon, as you've noted.

Every one is entitled to an opinion but not every opinion has value. American historians who advance the idea of British conquest never support the claim. With out proof you are just talking crap same as hack historians.

  • @Eddythebeast666

Before anyone can claim that British intended conquest they have to have proof to support it. There is no such poof. Further more there is a huge amount of evidence that contradict such a belief.

Baird is great man. Glad he will stand up for Israel - an ally of Canada and the only democracy in the middle east and against the terror, incitement and attempts to delegitimize Israel by the Palestininians and others.

that naval officer who is described as a 'war buff' doesn't seem to know that the borders of the countries were not established by this conflict.

Its called moving the goal posts. A political tactic to spin facts for public consuption. The defeat of Napoleon made it imposable for the US to win the war but it also removed the offical causes. Thing is the offical causes were no more real then the WMD in Iraq. The US needed to at least capture Canada to make a claim of stalemate. They failed. It is only by claiming Britain intended conquest that this illusion is maintained but no such ambision existed.
