It's so beautiful ❤
i am excited about the gay art!
And I’ve been using an Andean plyer the whole time 🙃 this is so much easier
Can’t wait for the gay art. Fellow queer person here and fully understand and agree with what you’re saying. ❤ keep being you
Thank god I’m finding the other gay fiber transes on this platform! There needs to be an exclusive club for us
I wonder if what people mean when they say they like that "your content isn't just queer stuff" is that they appreciate seeing a queer guy being an influencer where the stuff you talk about isn't just queer related stuff? Like it's nice to see queer people existing without Queerness™ being forced to be their *whole* personality, you know? But that's just what it sounds like to me. That being said, I personally am All In for gay art 🖤🤍💜
I really enjoyed this video! I’m a queer trans guy who loves fiber arts and it’s so nice to see someone like me who does as well. Most fiber artists I know (in person) are old ladies who don’t really get it, and it just makes me feel less othered in the community. Can’t wait to see what else you make :D
A fellow queer person here 👋 since you talked about being trans and queer-things it made me more eager to watch your content. You can’t give everybody what they want because everybody wants something else, so do what you want to do and the people that see your authentic self and follow along will be there for the real you. Every time you post I get excited to watch, no matter what it’s about. Also I’m curious to see your messages on the queer blanket, hope you talk all about it!! 😊
The truth of the matter is that being queer is a big part of people's lives. Society has made it impossible for it to be any other way, and I think that the moment for heightened visibility and discussion really is now, because of all the pushback we've been getting everywhere.
Love your content and thought process. Love your quest for spinning and fibre knowledge. Looking forward to your Rhinebeck haul. Look after yourself.
I think you should be able to talk about your life. it is something that guides your inspiration for your art. I mean, talking about fibre mostly, but also talk about yourself. BE YOU! if other people don't like you, they shouldn't watch. masking yourself is too much energy. also on the topic of Polwarth, i'm not surprised its better suited to USA than merino. it was literally bred to suit the environments in Australia.
It would be great if you kept topics fiber related.
I don't spin but I feel like I've stumbled on a hidden gem here :>
@@BoldAndBright this is so sweet 💕
Thank you for all your tips on how you got your bubble crepe to bubble crepe! Love it!

@@Wooltogold It was such a blast! And I discovered there is a local guild of spinners near me too!
As a queer masc person I had to delete all the apps because of the straight DL guys, totally skeeved me out. So I can't wait to see the blanket when it's done. Thank you so much for teaching things like you do. I vicariously live through your spinning content because I can't afford another hobby, so it's nice to learn about the craft and technique
@@danib6570 it’s coming together faster than I expected, so updates to come! I’m glad it seems to have resonated with people Happy to share! I used to watch all the spinning content I could get on YT before I bought my wheels, so I def sympathize; glad I can provide the same for others now!
Always here for some snarky queer shit, very excited to see how the blanket will end up :) As for the bubble crepe, you make it look like it it's super simple, so I might schedule it for after my big spin is off the wheel! Do you have a way to minimize the amount of leftover singles when making art yarns? I can imagine it's way harder to properly gauge how much yardage you need of each single when theyre different thicknesses.
@@jeanneb6320 thank you!! Definitely worth the spin! I’m biased because I love a weird yarn but bubble crepes are a great jumping point for experimenting with plying & twist. There are definitely methods to mitigate the extras but the math can get a bit complicated when you are spinning different fibers & wools for the plys. In order to get a really accurate estimate you would definitely need to spin a swatch or “test” and do the math based off of how much fiber was used for the thicker singles vs thinner singles and the weight of those fibers. I tend to just overspin the neutrals in both directions to such an excess that afterwards I can use them for another spin entirely! Very satisfying in a different way
I was so happy when you popped up! One of my missions with my channel has been to get younger people learning about fiber arts.
I especially enjoy anything that teaches me about fleece and spinning. I’m just getting into the hobby, so that’s super helpful to me. Also, I don’t know if you’ve ever spun silk, but I have some silk to spin but haven’t seen any tutorials yet, if that’s something you’re interested in.
@@Celcey24 I have spun a lot of silk, mostly blends but I have done 100% tussah & sari silk, and spun from a silk cap! I have one silk cap left, would love to show you guys how I *safely* prepare one and spin one! Silk is a long fiber and doesn’t need much twist, and can be dangerous to try to rip apart, but is also mad slippery, making it a tough fiber sometimes!
I am definitely curious to see how your retting attempts turn out. Please let me know what you find. It is something that I tried and I was not able to find a whole lot of info about how to ret the stalk fibers. However, the fluff attached to the milkweed seeds is definitely spin-able easier to process and super soft. I found something somewhere that you should mix it with another fiber to give it more strength so I added it to wool. Be prepared as the fibers as you are blending them will float around so you may want to wear a mask so they don't tickle your nose. I was reading somewhere to harvest them you can take the seed pods and stick them on drying rack with holes and then the seeds will fall out on the bottom leaving the fluff behind. Just make sure you leave enough so the plants can re seed or you take the seeds you harvest and come back to seed them again.
I am in between having wool to spin, and im DYING for spinning content, Brian! Please!! help! lol! I love your videos and adore gettng to see your TT Lives! <3
That fleece looks gorgeous!
Love your videos. Just a heads up, audio gets low at 9:36
Little tip for anyone diving into this: like dissolves like. If the lanolin has gotten stiff, chunky and brown more fresh oil will soften it up. Mineral oil works well, but if you want to use a natural food grade oil then coconut oil works great too. Fresh melted lanolin will also work, but would get pretty pricey. Softening it up helps get the wool clean in fewer scours. Hope that helps!
I think the flyer comes off? Great bag! 23:30
❤
Especially now in the world of AI "art" encroaching on human made art, defining all handspinning as art is more important than ever. I'm noticing a shift away from "final product" art that can be replicated by computers towards "process art" where seeing or imagining the process of how the piece was made IS part of the art itself. When you see a piece of wheel thrown pottery and imagine the hands that made it fitting into the curves of the piece itself, THAT is process art. When you see handspun yarn, you imagine the raw fibers being drafted and plied. Just like crochet, the human hands are necessary for that product to exist. I think live acoustic music also falls into this category, it is an experience, not an mp3. And on social media there is a trend of artists to show their process, like a proof of human life in the art they create. Machine spun yarn is as ubiquitous as die cast china, it literally exists in every home, every restaurant. It probably exists on your person as you're reading this. And while ai images of impossibly large amigurumi next to imagined grandmothers get very popular on social media, I really do think that tangible human made process art will only increase in art status (and hopefully cultural value) as their machine made and computer dreamed counterparts become cheap and ubiquitous. All of my handspun yarn is art. Art is fundamentally human and machines can pry that out of my cold dead human hands.
I love the look of art yarn, specifically the ones that don't look like commercial yarns. My problem has always been how to use them in my crochet or knitting. Thank you for showing us some examples on how to use them.
@@dianapulido1807 it does look so cool! As someone who now spins the yarn I’ve really come around to the idea that some yarns ARE the finished art, without ever being used in a project. I didn’t always feel this way though, and I have yet to see an art exhibit that shows yarn in this way, but I really hope to change that one day soon. There are lots of beautiful ways to work with art yarn, but I also just adore the way they look all skeined up, lookin pretty💕
new fave youtuber alert time to binge watch
@@td-js6fd you’re too sweet!! 🥰
Jackass Collective recommended your podcast recently, your videos are amazing ! I'm binge watching them haha It's making me want to pick up spinning again and use all the singles I've spun when I first started, you're very inspiring !
@@carolinawolf7708 oh my gosh that’s so sweet to hear bc I recommend their channel to everyone!! I love her work, such a beautiful artist ☺️ if nothing else you should totally use your singles! Appreciate all your beautiful work
Your fun! Alot of the Fibre content on youtube is pretty bland. I appreciate your sparkle and personality
I have never "mastered" the "perfect" singles. I never bothered to learn it. I went straight to plying, because i hate working with singles. I think I have just one skein of handspun singles, and i've been spinning for almost 4 years.
Spinning is such a vast hobby, I could spend the rest of my life perfecting the things i DO love and use, why would I waste time on the things I'll never use? You totally get it! As long as you're making yarn you love & you use, all is well :)
@@Wooltogold exactly! Who has time for perfectly balanced singles when there's crepe yarns to perfect?
I have a few thoughts. Regarding using the commercial definition of ‘art-yarn’: I got a boucle/thread-ply/something really crazy looking storebought art yarn for weaving… I nearly threw the whole project out the window. All I had was a small frame-loom with no heddle. The yarn stuck to itself; it stuck to the warp; it got caught in the warp and refused to pull through properly. I managed to finish it, and promptly shoved it under our Keurig coffeemaker, where it still is today. I tried using the same yarn for crochet (just to have it actually be *useful*)… And couldn’t see my stitches. The yarn is now relegated to the basement, destined to be forgotten. Regarding making and using singles and ‘fancy yarns’: I don’t see them as being useful for what I like making. I want to make strong, hardwearing yarn that can last. The only thing I use bought singles for is naalbinding, because I know it will form a cohesive fabric with time, and will be very easy to repair. I never spin my singles for use on their own, because I always spin with a lot of twist. I’m very paranoid about having *enough* twist so that the yarn won’t fall apart. I don’t really *trust* singles. Even the storebought stuff sometimes falls apart while I’m working with it and annoys the living crap out of me! I’m sorry you got got by this age’s Plague, I hope you feel better!
1000% agreed! I got into spinning to make "art yarn" and while I don't make so much bulky+textured yarn these days, I think every skein we produce has artistry. The "art" nomenclature is just gatekeeping, imho.
Such a good point about it being a gatekeeping term too! So often used to describe thick and thin beginner yarn, but it can be so precise & complex too. I hate when beautiful art yarn get's reduced to "Just art yarn"
I wrote out a long comment about the philosophy about what makes art, art, and TH-cam's suggested follow-up video glitched it all and it disappeared. Let me try again... I believe that it's *all* art. The irony is that when someone is skilled enough that their consistency is spot-on, the most minute details of their work become nearly inscrutable. It's ironic because they get so skilled that it seems to take the "emotion" from the medium, but that is no more true than someone whi is beginning spinning and has less control over their outcome. As Yarn artists work they instill their personal process, their very thoughts into the tiniest of decisions. A split-second difference in action isn't discernable when a person has a skill level so high that their yarn comes out completely consistent. We wouldn't look at a "perfectly"-executed drawing and say "that's not art." So why, when it comes to the "craftier" sides of art, do we gatekeep? Idk. Art is a spectrum <3 Everything created comes in its own shade. And all of it is art 🥰
PS I just got over Covid too! And this one hit way worse than my other experiences, which were rough enough. Ugh. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I just noticed your Spinning your singles counterclockwise. That’s the direction at least I normally fly in and I thought it was relatively speaking industry standard. Have you noticed it makes a difference to spin Z for lock spinning or is it just a personal quirk?
I mostly use my personal yarn stash for crochet, not knitting, so I tend to ply Z twist so it's "crochet" yarn and not knitting yarn! Many US yarns are plyed S twist so to avoid import fees and things I always make my own Z twist yarn
What does a 4-H sheep fleece mean?
Hey Brian!! I have been a long-time fan of your podcast and long-time lurker :P I purchased some of the Jacob fleece you processed a while back and whenever I see your podcast it makes me so happy :D I am also a queer spinner/maker. Thank you for your content :) I had a question: I remember you had mentioned some spinning podcasts you enjoy listening to (not youtube video ones, but audio podcasts), but I'm having a lot of trouble finding the video where you mention them for some reason!! Do you mind sharing what they were again? I do remember one of them was Wool and Spinning Radio... Thanks so much and happy making!!! PS. It's also through you that I discovered the joyful existence of thrift craft stores! I went to my first one on a trip to Victoria BC and absolutely loved it :D
Very informative and entertaining. Try to keep your audio levels equal throughout.
Just come across your channel I have a Wingham wool extra large drum carder but the Classic Carder shop and Paul Brittan's double wide high sided carder would have been my next choice Watching you take the carder out was so sweet and lovely, you reminded me of one of my children when they were younger Love, Hugs and best wishes ❤🤗 Ginnie-Jo from the North west of England
I wonder if cotton would be easier on an electric spinner? I want to experiment with cotton. I really want to grow cotton but over the past two years I haven't had any luck.
@@kellyrosloniec300 I think an espinner would be a good option because you can turn your speed up very high to compensate for the need for high twist in the fiber. Cotton is a toughie, I’m trying my hand at milkweed this year with the hopes of harvesting it & retting it in the late fall
I don’t have you wheel but I think the flyer head comes off so it can all be enclosed in the spinning wheel bag
Do you have a video on felting an entire fleece ?
Arthur lamb is absolutely adorable, it would be even cuter if you crocheted him a little cardigan or accessory 😮I'm here for all of your faves, normalize outfit repeating yes❤
I think I'll definitely need to try my hand at making Arthur an outfit! If I'm not repeating outfits like a cartoon character, who am I?
You are so wholesome and lovely ❤ making my heart swell, thank you
I love this technique. I find it helpful to re-wind the two ends into a plying ball before actually plying. Saves some headaches down the road.
That lamb is super adorable 😍 I admire your level of expertise in perfumes. I like good smells that tell stories. But it's rocket science for me 😬 What are the top 5 scents you recommend for someone who doesn't know where to start? And what Boy Smells scent do you think you could recommend? I wonder if their scents are not too masculine. It's said that they are genderless. But I haven't tried any genderless perfume yet.
I recommend finding some perfume/scent content that speaks to you (I like @perfumerism on here and Arabelle Sicardi, but I pay for her substack and it's not always scent related content) Boy Smells has a neat option where you can buy a sample pack and get the cost of the sample (maybe $54? I don't remember) put towards a full bottle of your favorite of the pack! Everyone is so different and I have such a specific taste in scents, so it's tough to blind recommend anything honestly! Lucky scent is a great option for trying a bunch of samples, and is hoenstly my favorite site for such options in terms of cost- make a list of 15-20 scents you'd like to try to get the free shipping, and make it an experience!). Start at sephora and find scents you like, work backwards to identify notes via fragrantica and use that to find future scents (ex you like vanilla, youtube "best vanilla scents 2024")
@@Wooltogold thank you so much! That's even better than just recommending specific scents 😀
