This is not a safe way to learn how to growl. While it's correct that this type of growling happens at the back of the mouth, clearing your throat is bad for your throat. It also shouldn't feel scratchy after doing it only a few times and you definitely shouldn't need to increase volume when you raise the pitch, whether growling or not. I love that this singer wants to help other singers but this particular advice is likely do more damage than good.

It sounds very forced. I use growling regularly but it never hurts when I do it. When you do it, it sounds as if you are actually hurting your voice. I l mean I do it how Michael McDonald does it.
