Jomo Kenyatta and Marcus Garvey were quite close in the Pan African Consciousness Movement when they lived in Europe, and that was the reason Jomo had a soft spot for the Caribbean, and he even named a road after him. Their other close associate was Haile Selassie, who was also exiled at the same time. After independence, Jomo brought in many lawyers, university and high school teachers from West Indies, especially judges. During colonialism, it was illegal for black people to study for professions like law, medicine, engineering, architecture, university lecturing etc, so you could only get black people with such skills in the Caribbean. There was also the idea of rebellious culture, music etc that resonated well with Kenyans, considering that it came from a very small country near the US, punching above its weight.
