DX101 | FM RDS Autologging WITHOUT using a computer?! (Meet the TEF6686 radio!)
มุมมอง 557หลายเดือนก่อน
In this edition of DX101, we take a look at using the popular TEF6686 series of radios as FM RDS Autologgers. And the best part is you don't have to use a PC (except to update the firmware of the radio) or dedicate one of your valuable SDRs to the cause! These cost-effective receivers are not only handy but also incredibly effective due to their extraordinarily sensitive (and fast!) RDS decodin...
Why a recording loop made a HUGE difference in my DX & why I beg all SDR developers to implement one
มุมมอง 3192 หลายเดือนก่อน
For the past four years, I have been using an SDR program for my Perseus SDR called Jaguar. It is tailored to MW DX but it has a feature that I feel every SDR developer should be looking at implementing in their own products....and it could be useful to all DXers no matter what type of signals you chase! Really appreciate you taking the time to do this!
I don't know if you identified them later, but your high school football on 1180 was WZQZ.
Thanks, Tim! I did manage to get that one down further in the stream. They have been coming in consistently this week.
relatively new to discord, the link below isn't taking me anywhere but my main discord page. any ideas?
Thanks, Loyd!
anytime my friend!
Watching this video and then realizing... HEY! I know this GUY!!!
Look who it is, LOL! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Awesome, thank you very much for covering this topic! Would be incredible if you also made a video about FM-DX Webserver.
excellent idea and one I am hoping to be able to do something with soon. I am contemplating putting a TEF6686 up with one of my FM antennas for online streaming
I occasionally have it "verifying" a Pi code with the wrong station. For example I get a pi code of 17EF for WTKX but it shows KDAD in Idaho. I looked in the database and do not see a code listed for KDAD and WTKX has the correct code. Not really sure where its getting the bad data.
A lot of the codes starting with "1" are shared codes shared by one or more station - usually with iHeartRadio - for their Total Traffic Network. Search that code at this website and you will see 4 stations are registered to that same code: picodes.nrscstandards.org/fs_pi_codes_allocated.html?
The one it verifies, though, is the one where the code matches on the frequency. That is why WTKX matched for you, because you were on that frequency. But it shows KDAD because that is the original station that was registered for that code (and the original codes are generated by an algorithm that uses the station call sign to create it).
Thank you for this. My desk top radio arrived Friday. I had just finished updating the firmware when I got the notification of this video. When the student is ready the teacher will appear. Thanks again.
That is awesome! Happy to help, hope you get a ton of new catches from it! 73
I like it,Loyd !
Thank you , sir!
How does it handle frequency changes beyond the spectrum slice tuned? Does it start a new file? I.E. you're tuning MW and suddenly jump to the 6-8MHz segment?
The Jaguar software is only looking at the MW band, so that isn't a problem they had to solve for. So, I would assume that any implementation would have to have settings in the SDR program for selectable bandwidth and it would change to whatever center frequency you choose as you move around a bit.
Jaguar samples the entire Perseus’ BW. In its live mode that can be centered on a HF frequency. But the whole set of BW recording and analysis functions is optimized for non live DX on MW, IMO.
Lloyd, to be fair to Simon at SDR Console, this feature is present in SDR Console, albeit a little more limited - upto 30 seconds instead of 8 minutes. You can set up a Record preset that will cache upto 30 seconds in the IQ file when you hit record, and when you replay it, it will include the 30 seconds before you hit record. You can change the buffer in 5 second increments. In SDR Console, Rec/Playback > Data :: Record > Options - and in the data recording options, click the cache drop down to choose how many seconds to cache when you create a recording preset. Hope this helps. There might be issues in creating a cache as large as 8 minutes in some SDR programs, as it might impact on performance - where you might be dealing with higher bandwidths of audio than Jaguar. I haven't used Jaguar, so know little about it, but am I right in saying it only covers mediumwave, so it would only be recording a much smaller bandwidth than say recording a large chunk of the FM boroadcast band in SDR Console?
Thank you for the heads up....I hadn't heard/noticed that before in Console. I just set it to 30 seconds on my end and will be testing this evening. I am running a full 24 MHz FM bandwidth with the Elad FDM-S3 to give it the full shakedown.
The only thing with this is that you still have to initiate a recording and are not able to do "live" rewinding to replay back what was just heard. That is the feature I am looking for....to be able to go back and review in real-time what just happened live without having to commit to a recording. A cache is a step in the right direction, since you can hear something, decide you want to review it later and have time to hit record and still capture what you heard live. But, you have to wait until you end the recording and then pull it up to review as you would any other recording. Better than nothing, but not the solution I was looking for.
Yes!
Absolutely! That 8-minute feature you speak of has helped me id stations on crowded frequencies on the AM band on numerous occasions! 👍
Agree!!!! Thank you Loyd!
Makes sense.
Great idea.
I was listening on my phone and couldn't hear the XEZON-1360 ID you mentrioned at 8pm Central. XEZON was destroyed by flooding a year or two ago, and last I heard they had no estimated date to finish rebuilding. Also they have historically signed off at 6pm CST/7pm CDT. Are you able to send me a clip so I can update the IRCA Mexican Log as needed? Thanks/73 Tim Hall (email address in Mexican Log)
Just heard your later response to Mike J...
Yeah, i was thinking it might have been them, but didn't know they weren't on-air still.
Hola saludo desde estados unidos
¡Hola a ti y saludo desde Luisiana!
Did you capture this one yourself? Only asking because it’s a station about an hour and a half from me. And I was wondering how you were able to pick it up
I only upload airchecks of stations I actually pick up with my own equipment! In this case, I picked this one up with my SDR and W6LVP loop antenna from a hotel room in Omaha back in 2022!
@@DXCentral are those antennas relatively expensive
Most SDR Decoders are it same . Most Impotant is the Software, One RX beter then Other. Software. Then Perseus extremly BS price 1000 euro and server conect 3000 eur. and software you mus pay extra lol then is the Difrent nothing more. SDRplay RSP1B 150 dollar DX version 300 Dollar Decoder VS Peseus whit hes stupid 1000 dollar lol. And SDRPlay Company come now out whit a Conect decoder over some days very Intresting.

4:45 Hi Loyd, Interesting that you could hear Haiti. I never heard them while in Virginia. Out here in the radio dead zone known as central Oregon, hearing anything is counted as a success. I won't even get into the massive amount of QRM. My question that I am curious about, could you have heard Haiti using the SDR# Co-channel plugin that you discussed in another great video? I would be interested how that test would play out. I know you are in LA and not SC now. Just any thoughts would be interesting. I do have a Time Wave ANC-4,but have never had any luck with it. Is it supposed work like the MFJ in your video? Since MFJ is gone, any recommendation for a specific model? Your videos are fantastic. Thanks so much for having them available. Regards, George, NJ3H Redmond, Oregon USA
I live in hammond too! 😊👍👍👍
Sorry, I missed the show... Will have to watch it later.

Can't wait!
Thanks, Loyd! Question--I'm still getting used to this feature. Should I tune for a null on the dominant station first, or max its signal before engaging the AM canceller?
I will say that it is harder for the CCC to cancel out weaker signals than a strong one. You may want to test it out and see if there is enough of the signal left after nulling to be able to get rid of the rest of it with the CCC. If not, that is where I would recommend adding more of the signal back in for it to 'grab' a hold of and be able to cancel.
Let's GO! Makes me realize I have to install v10 of Jaguar Pro!😊
I am just now getting to play with it tonight after not using the Perseus all summer. It is a little different, that is for sure!
Hope to have more time to participate as I’ve really enjoyed the Summer DX Challenge
Definitely hope to see you joining in! You have been getting some great stuff in the Challenge!
I had a weather forecast and news headlines from CBC 740 Toronto I recorded on a cassette tape in the spring of 1991 I believe from regular AM radio. It was a clear cool spring night and the man reading the weather had a very British accent like this, and the man reading the news was named Ralph something. Sadly I believe I lost that tape years ago.
GREAT ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️.
Too much candy for a dime and Eddie Raven please play thank you
