A total of 4 major ascents lead up to the 2481 metre high Colle della Fauneira.
1. from the Italian town of Demonte, the approximately 24 km long, fully asphalted ascent leads through the Vallone dell'Arma in a north-westerly direction. Just 2 km before the Colle Fauneira, you also pass the Colle Valcavera, which at 2421 metres is only slightly lower.
2. coming from the north-west, a gravel road, the Maira-Stura ridge road, meets the Colle Valcavera (2421 metres). From here it is less than 2 kilometres to Colle Fauniera. The Maira-Stura ridge road begins to the north in the village of Marmora. The last 15 km of this stretch is an unpaved gravel road.
3. the SP113 road to Colle Fauniera, which is asphalted throughout, also begins in the village of Marmora. The approximately 17 km long ascent first reaches the Colle d'Esischie (2370 metres) and then the Colle Fauneira just 1 km further on.
4. the SP333 road leads from the east through the Valle Grana, first past the Colle d'Esischie to the Colle Faueira. The road is asphalted throughout and from the village of Campomolino it is about 15 kilometres.
Colle Fauneira is also known as Colle dei Morti because of the fierce and bloody fighting that took place here during the world wars. Today, the area is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists. A monument to the famous cyclist Pantani, which was erected on Colle Fauneira, honours his sporting achievements.
The Vallone dell'Arma is a valley incision that leads from the village of Demote in a north-westerly direction to the top of the pass. The SP268 road runs through the valley. At the beginning, up to the first village of Fedio Massolo, the road is still two-lane. Then it becomes increasingly narrower and is actually only 1-lane. The ascent is about 24 km long and leads via Colle Valcavera, which also forms the entrance to the Maira-Stura ridge road, to the destination. The road is quite narrow and confusing and cyclists and pedestrians should be expected.
It is important to note that two smaller sections of the route are one-way. Towards the top of the pass, you can cycle on asphalt; downhill, however, the route leads over gravel sections, some of which are difficult to cycle on. However, this regulation does not apply to cyclists, who are allowed to ride on the one-way road in the opposite direction. It is also important to note that some road users nevertheless use the one-way road in the "wrong" direction in order to avoid the gravel sections. Special care should be taken here.
The road is located in the Italian province of Cuneo in the Piedmont region.
