To be honest this is when I fell in love with Arcade Fire! Yes you can look at it as they got hosed with the ads, but I choose to remember how I felt in that moment watching this live on tv I thought it was and still to this day one of the coolest playoff the air I've seen period the performance was organic. The the fact that they're Canadians makes them even cooler in my book and I'm American 👍🏽

All these old commenters weren't watching this live. They had just gotten off stage. Were backstage for the presentation of album of the year came back on stage and instead of making a speech to close out the show they gave a performance. Of which the Grammys showed 3 uninterrupted minutes of. Instead of the 1 minute long speech + host to close out the show. No one had ever done it. It was incredible.

Favorite song from the album...the guitar loops in the background are hauntingly perfect. It's so apropos that they got to perform it right after winning to everyone's surprising.

Remember seeing this live on TV. Rarely watched the Grammys before (or since for that matter) but their performances that night was amazing.

Finally, the Academy lets good music reign instead of popular music, and they get millions of people backlashing on twitter. This is why Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc, never win. because people can't take it.

Having attended the Grammys in '11, and what the cameras fail to show is that most of the attendees, save the hand picked "plants" that were instructed to dance next to the stage, were flooding the exits to rush the after party before Arcade Fire even started performing their closing song. It seemed like the biggest "fuck you" to me at the time, and I think a lot of people were really upset, disappointed, and confused about them getting Album of the Year. But Win got the last word in.
