Papa Gimels Gets Inspire(d)

I did not find many videos logging the journey of someone in their 40s going through Sleep Apnea Inspire surgery so decided to share my experience. Failed CPAP in Oct 2023, approved for Inspire in April and finally got the surgery in July 2024

There are mismatches and then there's this. I genuinely feel bad for Bob Robbins having to line up against Ryan Anderson of all people. You have to imagine that the low-level independents who run mostly small arenas would be thinking "oh COME ON!" when one of the GOATS of Monster Jam who runs stadiums 9 times out of 10 shows up to clap their cheeks.
I’m glad u recovery is getting better im a little nervous to getting in to it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you. I was nervous too, but I am loving the results. Looking forward to a sleep study later this month to learn about how my AHI has changed
Good news for me, after doing a in office baseline study, I don't have to use my cpap anymore.
Did u have to shave your face for surgery?
I don’t believe I had to, but I did shave my neck just to make it easier for the Dr
Ty so much for sharing your journey. Im on the fence about getting the surgery. Im scared but between a rock and hard place. I cant sleep with a cpap. I just cant. Best wishes and prayers for your success. Not too many people take the time to do these videos thougherly. It really helps. Ty
I am on the (9th) day of post Inspire implant surgery, I have had minimal pain,,,,more like a discomfort and the area of incision is healing very well. I put a large bandage on both my chest and neck area when i am taking a shower, then remove the bandage and just let clear warm water flow over the incision area. I am excited for the activation date in about 3-4 week, depending on my healing progress.
Glad to hear it Steve. It just gets better
Thank you for sharing your story. 2 years ago I had 60 events an hour, now with my weight loss it is 24 events an hour. I am really hoping and praying I get approved for the inspire.
I hope so too! Good luck!
when you click the button, it has a 20 to 30 minute delay before it actually turns on so you have time to fall asleep. You set the amount of delay with your inspire rep and can change it at your appointments.
The scars don't look to bad. When i had my weight loss surgery i uad five scars on my stomach.
I have finally lost enough weight to get my BMI where it needs to be to have the surgery. I go Monday 11/11 to get a referral for my insurance. I really hope I get approved because I have a hard time with CPAP because I am very closterphopic.
Hello, thanks for sharing your journey, my AHI is 52 times an hour, and I've been off and on CPAP and Dental appliances for 3 years now. Not tolerating CPAP well, dental appliance has created horrible jaw pain. I have Tinnitus and Insomnia, and I'm a candidate for Inspire through the VA. I'm headed to ENT again on 11/9. I have spoken to several Inspire Ambassadors about their journeys. Question, is it a life/game changer? Do you sleep uninterrupted 6-7 hours? Do you feel well-rested and have more energy to conquer life? Do you dream again? Has brain fog dissipated and concentration excelled? So many questions.. Can you refer to any more videos and or blogs for reference? Thanks again, I'll continue to follow.
Glad it's working for yah. I had my implant done a little over 2 weeks ago and I cannot wait to fire this puppy up. I gotta say, my scars don't look nearly that bad. I didn't have a hematoma but I also took BPC-157. I've got zero discomfort, full range of motion and no pain. The team at UC Davis did an amazing job and I can't recommend them enough! As far as the scar chafe, the seat belt in my side by side is really tight and gets bothersome on a long ride. I just put a couple bandaids over it and that solved the problem. Car seat belts don't bother it at all. Anyways, it's exciting to know see that it's effective on someone who isn't paid to say that. I know it will work great for me as it is designed for the exact issue that is causing my apnea and a good doctor doing a DISE is needed to determine that effectively.
Best of luck! Glad you had a good surgical experience.
I’m at level 7 also I told my inspire rep it would be good if they had a feature which did a slow ramp into the voltage. Seems like initially it’s very harsh but usually when I wake up I’m almost not sure if it’s on well not so much now at the higher levels but it seems as if you adjust
I hope it as life changing for you - in a good way - as it has been for me.
Do you notice or feel the device in your chest?
I do not feel it unless I rub my hand over it. And I don’t particularly enjoy the feeling of touching the scar. It has been 3.5 months since surgery. However the device does not protrude and you cannot see it even with my shirt off. Scar is there though. The sleep makes it all worth it.
@papagimels so it works well? I do well on cpap but hate the mask and I tried 5 different types plus I can't cuddle with my wife.
it works amazingly well and I can definitely cuddle with wife, kids, whomever wants a cuddle. And I don’t have to be dressed like an F 15 fighter pilot in order to get through the night which stopped working for me last year which is why I went through with the surgery.
@papagimels well now I wait to see what my insurance will pay lol
@papagimels so how is it when it's on? Does it mess with your speech?
I have been 12 days post surgical and my chin is well healed and my chin is a bit tender but healed , Iam shaving around it to avoid cutting it. Doing my exercises and doing well. I cant get back on my bicycle yet because ENT fears a crash. Cant wait wait for 11/18 for my activation date.
Finally got a chance to shave my neck in the area, real careful though, needed NO mistakes, other than that ok, little discomfort in the incision area but no big deal. Just waiting on 11/18/
I just had my first post-surgical sleep study completed. My AHI went from 97 to 5! I can't wait to hear what yours will be at.
Omg that’s fantastic! Congratulations! How many hours of sleep are you averaging? I also can’t wait for a sleep study. Likely in Dec-Jan.
I got my implant on Oct 1 and I've had the worst headaches since then...I'm told it will go away but it has been rough. My chest area still feels pretty tender as well as my neck. I'm hoping it will be worth it. The device will get programmed close to the middle of Nov.
Headaches? I have not read about that as a symptom. I have read some folks have earaches. Hope they clear up soon. This has been a blessing for me. Was worth all of the trouble. Although I am still about a month or so away from a sleep study which those results will be the true test.
@ I have daily headaches, including migraines. My doctor only told me about it the day of the surgery before going to the OR. I also have earaches. It's been about a month and it hasn't subsided so I'm curious what happens on 11/14 when my implant gets programmed. And I hope it works after all this pain.
If you get up during the night to use restroom do you need to use remote to pause it?
Yes you do need to press the button to pause it which pauses for 15 min default. Or you can have Inspire rep change the amount of time. It pauses and then turns back on after the time passes - no need to press button again. I had them change mine to 20 min
I get my implant Friday can’t wait
That’s awesome! Best of luck!
@stevenlicari4388 how did it go?
@@papagimels not too bad still alot of swelling in the neck but I'm moving around
Congratulations. When the device is active is there pain or an odd feeling or do you even notice it working?
No pain. Definitely notice when it turns on if I am not asleep yet. It is a strange feeling, but not painful.
@@papagimels Thank you
I use 1hr before bedtime a tongue retainer plastic sleeve . It helps to stretch out my tongue.
Do you take it off before you go to sleep?
@papagimels yes, I have tried to sleep with but I can't. Also losing some weight, I noticed it has helped. Every time my weight goes up, my sleep goes down. It was a nightmare for me, I couldn't fall asleep. My nostrils/nose would collapse, blocking my air intake and making noise and waking me up. Losing weight is number 1. Then adjusting pillows, I need to have some height, like a pillow and half, firm pillows. Using the Silent Mammoth device every night. Also 1 hr with the tongue device to stretch out. Good luck out there to anyone suffering from sleep apnea.
My surgery is coming up in a few days and I am really wondering if I'm making a bad decision. How are things going?
@@ChrisArbaughthings are going great. I had the same last second thoughts as well. I don’t regret getting it one bit even with the complications I had. I have been using it nightly for over a month and absolutely love the deep sleep I am getting!
Was averaging 5.5 hours per night the first few weeks. Now getting closer to 6.5. Had a few nights of 7.5. Truly awesome
I will try the easiest way, losing some pounds.
Yup I tried that. Lost 33lbs since last July. BMI down from 33 to 29. Still have sleep apnea.
That was my thought also but was told it would not make any difference if I lost weight. I'm about 15 lbs over weight with severe sleep apnea.
After recovery did you have any jaw, headaches or ear pain? How long did it last if you did?
No jaw pain. No headaches. I did notice a little bit of ear discomfort when I first started turning on the Inspire unit, but that has gone away as I am now halfway through level 3. Still tender on the neck and I really don’t like the feel of the scar tissue on my chest, but I have been told that will go away with time.
Got the inspire 9 years ago. I was one of the first 100 people in the US to get it. I had problems with it. But hot through it. On Auguat 28th I got the new model. 10 days in healing nicely. Did have some swelling and redness at the generator implant site. On Augmention for 14 days. Everyone will have some minor problems. With the original I had goofy issues. It's refined so much. No one is alike. Mine was done at Tampa General Hospital with USF ENT doctors.
I am hoping that they upgrade me to whatever the latest greatest unit is at the 10 year battery replacement interval. My rep told me they are working on new units with AHI metrics.
I’m post op 4 days. Hopefully I won’t have the same issue
4 days. I am hoping you are in the clear!
I am. Still healing but certainly not the experience you had
Sleep
What was the name of the app for the Apple Watch, thank you.
It’s called Sleep. It comes with the Apple Watch.
I got my INSPIRE install date for the end of October in Maryland, so excited and cant wait to get off this CPAP machine
I am 6 days in and still on level 1. I have been sleeping between 4-7 hours. My wife tells me she has not heard me snore at all. I have had dreams for first time in ages so hitting REM and deep sleep. Tracking sleep through apple watch app. It is a game changer. Can’t wait to go up to level 2 tomorrow! Good luck!
Please keep me posted. Am on day three and feel that level 1 is negligible and I hate that the beep is not intuitive. Tone up….on. Tone down …off. Pause function is causing me grief end up powering off and back on to be sure it is on. 🤷♂️
I am on level 6 and averaging about 5.5 hours. Level 7 was a bit much for me so had to go back down
I am now at about 12 days out and doing well, chin incision is almost not detected , but cant shave over it yet. chest scar is non existence for pain, so far so good for now,
That’s awesome! Yeah I made the mistake of shaving around the neck incision and have nicked it a few times. Not a fan of my chest scar.
It only gets better brother! I love seeing the updates. ❤
Can’t wait. Thank you!
How has your energy been over the last couple of weeks?
Energy level has been greatly improved. Averaging 5 hours of sleep on level 3. Not feeling exhausted in the afternoons
Thank you for sharing your story. My AHI was 96. I had my Inspire surgery back on May 15th and it was activated on July 1st. Everything is going well. I'm extremely interested to have the new sleep study done with the Inspire rep to see what my current AHI is. Good luck with your activation.
Thank you! How many hours of sleep are you getting without waking up? Keep me posted on your sleep study results. I look forward to finding out your AHI as well. A guy on reddit told me he improved from 98 or so to just 4 AHI with Inspire. I can’t wait to get some sleep!
@@papagimels That would be amazing to get that low. My doctor told me to expect somewhere in the 20 to 30 range. I had my first all night's sleep last week. On average. I'm getting 3 to 4 hours at a time though. Before the implant I was getting 10 to 15 minute spurts.
@@allanrscott15 minute spurts??? You must be exhausted 24/7. How long has that been going on? I get 2-3 hours then wake up fully awake between 1-3am. If I am lucky I try to fall asleep 1-2 hours later. Totally exhausted by midday. Try to stay up with coffee throughout the pm. Often have to take breaks while commuting home. I am hoping to get to 15 AHI. Anything less would be amazing.
@@papagimels I had been doing that for decades. Just becomes part of your normal routine. I was able to fall back asleep within seconds. But I can recall waking up two to three times every hour. I can't wait to hear how you feel after activation.
It has been nearly 30 days since activation and I love this thing!!!

I dropped weight 199 to 145 and no longer need cpap. That was 10 years ago.
That’s awesome! I have dropped from 238-207. Still don’t sleep much and snore all night long. Perhaps, if I drop back into the hundys…
I weighed 145 when I was 7 years old
@@xocnavi1 omg? What about now?
I did the same thing! I decided not to have the surgery.
I have been considering this route. I will be watching for followups.
Sounds good. I will keep posting.
