24 Robbers - shedding some lesser played alto sax

Once every few years I get a gig on the Alto sax and then I have to shed it frantically. What better tune to blow out the cobwebs and bust out your chops than "24 Robbers"? What? You've never heard of it? You gotta know the tunes! Unbelievable.

    The concept of "Winning" in any artistic pursuit is nonsensical! But I love your analysis. I've been familiar with these solos (particularly LY's) for over sixty years, yet your analysis has given me some new insights.

    You sound amazing, and your pianist has Fats Waller's left hand and Oscar Peterson's right hand. That works for me. And shout out to your drummer, too, who knows to stay below and drive things.

      Oh man! Thank you. Yeah, Jason (piano) is incredible. He sings brilliantly and plays really great banjo. I miss working with him. Kevin (drums) is a total boss too. I've only worked with him a couple of times but he fit in so well.

      @duncanhemstock 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the start of the year, I was doing an arrangement of the solo and so I spent a bunch of time on it. When we were playing this I thought "I know the solo in 'G' so I can play it in 'f'." I very quickly found out that I couldn't! :) Such a dufus.

    It would be cool if the score has chords though :)

    • @duncanhemstock
      @duncanhemstock 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry about that. This was originally made for non-musicians (particularly in the dance community) who love Swing music to help them understand it a bit more. I worried that the chords might over complicate things. If I get around to it, I'll try to add a chord sheet as a PDF or something similar. Thank you very much for watching and commenting! Watch out for the Lester Young Vs Charlie Christian video coming soon :)

      @duncanhemstock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It makes a nice partner to my 10m. Unfortunately I don't know much about it other than it's from 1960. I very rarely play alto but I love the sound of this one. The intonation isn't the easiest to control but that's probably because I play it far too infrequently. Thank you for watching!

    • @harriesadam
      @harriesadam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duncanhemstock Huh! I'm surprised that it's a 60's model, given the underslung octave mechanism, but I'm sure you know better than me! Lovely playing anyway - I really love the sound of old conns (which is why I have my own 30's alto), but your intonation is still beautiful compared to mine!

    • @harriesadam
      @harriesadam 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@duncanhemstock Definitely agree that it's the player rather than the gear - I just happen to be fascinated by the history of the instruments, and I love thinking of all the people who played them before me, and how they made their way to me! w.r.t conn serial numbers, I've found saxpics the best resource, specifically this page: www.saxpics.com/?v=man&manID=3 and this one: www.saxpics.com/?v=ser&manID=3#full_chart Here's to it being even cooler!
